I just wanted to start off by saying that it is nice seeing the progression of you improvement. I thought that I might offer a few things that I have heard from others and learned myself if you seek improvement.
1.) Excuses are like @$$holes, everyone has one, and they all stink!
Iâve noticed that with nearly every post, you have an excuse (or reason) accompanying it explaining why it doesnât look this way, or why it looks that way. Stop that. Seriously. Knock it off. If you donât respect your own work, nobody else will, either. Your work doesnât have to be âgoodâ, it doesnât have to be â100%â Thatâs the whole point of learning. Donât make excuses for your art, instead, stand by it and be proud of it. Instead of comparing your work to the work of others, compare your work to your own. See how much youâve improved, and realize that you will continue to improve.
2.) One can only âStylizeâ AFTER theyâve learned the fundamentals.
Seriously, honestly, perhaps even brutally: Your anatomy is weak, it isnât very good. You have things âroughlyâ where they belong (which is a great first step!) but the inaccuracies really detract from your images. Donât make excuses like âItâs stylizedâ or âthatâs the way I do it,â because those donât work. Instead, try reading a book on anatomy and sculpture. Until recently, I had much of the same issue with my work, but I decided to invest in a book titled âModeling The Figure in Clay - A Sculptorâs Guide to Anatomyâ and it has been a big help, especially for ZBrush. You may want to consider a similar route, if you are serious about improving and learning.
3.) If I say it looks like someone, everyone will agree.
Your likenesses are pretty hit-or-miss, and I hate to say it, but most of the time they are pretty âmissâ Youâve got a good start on a few of them, but you have been accentuating features that shouldnât be, and detracting from features which should be concentrated on more. For Example, Lt Cmdr Data from Star Trek TNG; Take a good look at Brent Spiner. His face is wide, with his facial features taking up a small portion of his face. His eyes are slender, and his eyebrows sit low and straight on his head, producing the illusion that his forehead is unnaturally large. His mouth is small and appears fairly tightly pursed, and his nose is fairly large by comparison. What you would want to concentrate on, for this character, is the shape of the face (rectangular), the size of the nose versus the size of the eyes, the fat deposits on the face, and the size of the mouth. Learn to better observe, and you will learn to create a better likeness.
If you find yourself failing to improve, take a break. Pursue something else for a week or so, go on vacation from ZBrush, relax, work on 2D stuff. Sometimes when we focus too hard on something, we start missing the important details that we would not have missed otherwise. Sometimes taking a break from something that we work so hard on improving can lead directly to that improvement that we so aggressively seek.
