Most of these sculpts look like they inhabit an aquatic world. Are they based off of any existing aquatic animals?

CriticalHap, they are in fact based on aquatic animals, the goal was to illustrate creatures from H.P Lovecraft book, the shadow over Innsmouth.
They are described as fish/frog humanoid creature.
So I try to introduced fish and frog in them ;)
