Sketchbook - Cesar Dacol Jr.

The guy in Aqua World looks familiar

It was great getting a little face time with you at Sigg, it honestly made the trip worth it for me. Watching you, Scott, and Magdalena do your live demos was both inspiring and humbling. I can’t wait till I get that comfortable with anatomy. I got some great tid-bits just loitering at that booth. You ushered me, kicking and screaming, to my ZBrush “ah-ha!” moment, and for that I’m eternally grateful. I still remember the first email I wrote you, where I was basically dissing z-spheres before the class even began, and wanted to use max as much as possible…in a ZBrush class. Now I love z-spheres. I want to put them in a pipe and smoke them like crack…or mix them in with my garden salad or something.

Listen to this guy, folks. And remember, foundation is king.

Mater…is possible to have, in a new gnomonology tutorial, a realistic human head video? It would be nice…or something like Norman

really cool textures. Great sculpt and paint!

Great interview, Cesar. Also, congrats on the spot in Scott’s book. I just got it the other day and I’ve been pouring through it. Very exciting stuff!

I actually watched two of your tutorial demos at the show. I love your work and work ethics for artists to be artists and not rigging/technical masters. We just want to create art! You were great and very influential for me to get into sculpting with digital clay myself. I was exactly like you with the fact that I HATE pushing nerbs around in Maya and wanted to speed up my workflow and just be CREATIVE. I dove in last night to learn the program, play with the alpha brushes and sculpt my first monster from the zbrush demo head. I was up until 1:30AM and couldn’t stop myself. Zbrush is so addicting! You were right that it is just like clay but without all the mess.

Anyway, I really wanted to ask you about something you went over in your demo. You referenced that you had some killer Alpha wrinkles and pores that you got off of the zbrush central website and you used them in your demo at Siggraph. I think you said you used some of them for the Norman model too. I have searched for over an hour for them on ZBC and can not find them anywhere. Would you be able to send me the link or what to search? I would love use them myself in my models.

Thank you so much for your time. Keep up the killer work.

Hi All,

dustinbrown, Thanks dustin it was fun to do… the book is full of great material.

mokthemagicman, The alphas that I was talking about were the ones Rick Baker posted up. Do a search for monstermaker and it’s his father sculpt.
Glad you enjoyed the demo. I had a blast doing it.

skullmonster, hope you enjoyed it.

Hi Kupo, wow… thank you for the plug. Believe me you all inspire me everyday.
I’m thrilled if I in some small way can return the favor.

Today I give you, “Wolf Blood”.
Sculpt and textures in ZBrush.
Multiple renders combined.
Fur and compositing in Photoshop.

Dear Cesar:
i must to admit that I hav no idea how did you do that!!!
I can´t say when beging the zbrush and when the photoshop,. I think that looks so cool this image, it is very powerfull realistic.
Could I ask you how did you fo the hair?

thanks for all, Arturo

great work man ! very nice render and composit…!
…i read your interview and enjoyed that…infact always i try to learn from the masters and their experience…waiting for your new production tutorials…

well done!
the model is stunning!
its perfect!
5 stars

sweeeeet :)

Hey Cesar
This is truly great stuff. I’ve been watching your Gnomon Chucky/Linda Blair tutorial and was seriously impressed! Congrats and thanks man!

Hey Cesar, its always great to see new work from you!
Keep them coming man!

I was checking out your video at pixologic.com really great to see the man behind this all amazing stuff.
I was wondering what render config you use to render your final passes for the composition. For example in the alien you showed at the video.
Could you share this? I always have problems to get a nice result in zbrush render. I usually just high the samples and move the light. I dont find a nice result using more than one lighting or changing a lot of values at the render pallete.

Thanks man!

Best.

Hi All,
Pixologic recently released a series of videos showcasing my Siggraph Demo.
I hope you enjoy it.

DHARMAESTUDIO, Hey Arutro… I wish there was a simple explanation for the hair. It is a combination of source material and painting. Very time consuming… good thing I enjoy the process

skulll_monster, just finishing up a DVD on comprehensive artist anatomy, then I will jump back on to the gnomonology projects.

hugo dionisi, Wow! I guess you’re my first 5 stars… I humbly thank you.

Intervain, Merci!

Captain Sensible, He, he, he, Thanks… I really had allot of fun doing that one.

grassetti, Unfortunately I have no real secret when it comes to rendering. In fact I think it is my weakest point. I am now, probably will always be, first and foremost a sculptor.
Any how, what I do is tend to use a regular material and play around with both it’s values as well as the lighting.
Once I find a set that works for me I will save them out together in a folder.
Then I will use them for rendering.
Every picture is different so I pretty much always end up tweaking my shadders and lighting.
Sorry, I know this didn’t help… I too wish there was a holy grail button push… maybe in the future.

An image showing the sculpt, color and fur… no render passes.
The final image had multiple passes rendered and then composited togther.

Cheers

Hey Cesar,

Stunning work as always… such a great design, and that fur is incredibly well done! You sound busy lately, not sure how you can find the time to do so much personal work!

Nice work Cesar, as always your a great inspiration.

I Like how you added the fur, nice touchup.
