I don’t think your signature scares folks away.
Sometimes it’s as simple as posting something right before a bunch of other folks do…which means your post gets pushed down a bit further and the thumbnail bottom top row gets bumped out faster. I reckon a good many folks only come here and if so inclined respond only to those thumbnails on top that interest them so if yours has been booted oout already…it will only be seen by a few and of those few…maybe half will post something.
so…have confidence in your work, yourself first so that when ya post for crits and don’t get many responses you can have the faith in yourself to self-critic.
I like both versions a lot. First version has character just because it’s a portrait of you, a human being, and we all have character to one degree or another; but the second version (creature) has even more character, I think, just because it’s more imaginative 
It never ceases to amaze me how many different things one can do out of one initial mesh, how much you can change it and how completely different outcomes it will produce each time.
I love the big lips, the flat wide nose, and the bushy eyebrows. It’s got a big caveman feel about it, but not too big to not being able to place him in a contemporary environment
