fanboys…
These are great models, renders.
Vdepth tip is interesting. BTW vdepth at +20 combined with a rim back light can produce a similar to sss effect (I used extremely blurred shadows -0.7-here)
great start of the sketchbook man congrats:D
Something has to be done with the rating system.
On top row we have one 5*, three 4* and this thread now 3*. What a nice and polite community! Because you can’t vote without explaining the same time. Why to do that?
So Artistic Sculpts!! Every time I see ur sculpts its feel so special n artistic.
Hats off to ur artistic talent n dedication to art. U revolutionised d way I see digital sculpts.
I love your work Ryan
great work as always. Love the bronze.
Cheers
Ralf Stumpf
Some hot sh*t here!
I was thinking that something like VDepth shadowing was used for that animation in the latest Harry Potter, guess I’ll have to wait for the next Cinefex for details…
Thanks for sharing Ryan, I must admit you are one of the cg artists that inspire me the most, I love the traditional art look and expressiveness of your human sculpts.
I was wondering… do you ever use mannequins for concepting and sculpting characters or only zspheres/zsketch? if not, why?
Thanks
Hey Ryan,
Very nice models heresmall_orange_diamond

small_orange_diamond:)! Brian Froud really is a great master!
Whoa! Thanks for that process insight!
Yeah, this is some neat work. I really like Ryans style. He has a real knack for making his work look like real clay sculpts.
Top row? Not too sure about that. That bar is pretty high these days.
Ultimately Ryan deserves it. He is a great resource here.
Awesome!!
Etcher - Glad you like the bronze! You’re a master of presentations yourself.
Marcus - Thanks! Wanna create a Rendering Master plugin with me?
tuff- thanks. I appreciate.
Baz Mazur - Thanks. Means alot coming from a pro like yourself.
Floydshayvious - Glad you like it
branduarte - Thanks. Glad you like the bronze.
mrpeculiar & GX@W - Damned with faint praise! So it goes.
Moni-Poroni - Thanks. More about bronze coming up!
SolidSnakexxx - Thanks. That CNC milling on FaceBook is pretty cool!
thomas_bijoy - Thanks. Clay is my specialty
kaisasose - Cool. Glad you think its captured it. Was fun to sculpt. Each one was done in one very packed day.
manzarek123 & sculptor.zb - Thanks. That last one, the bronze one, is my favorite. That one, of course, is part of my movement into fine art.
klausknuth - More to come.
defdaz - More than welcome. Thanks for commenting.
silvaticus - Not sure I understand this? Are you saying I’m a Froud fanboy? That would be weird but as it is. Thanks for posting.
rodion vlasov - Thanks. Great sketches on YouTube. Have your heard about LunchCrunch by Danny Williams?
Rituparna - Very cool. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.
Doqpelgänger - Thanks.
Stumpf - Was thinking of you the whole time I created the bronze. I really love your MatCap materials.
neoseb - Thank you.
markkens - Hmm, interesting. Could be a post effect.
macaco - Thanks for the kind words. I do use mannequins. Even created some 8 head proportional ones. They weren’t around when I did the test for the bronze statue, though. You should try resculpting a posed mannequin with clay brush. Pretty cool result.
Cristian Rio - Agreed about Froud! Wonderful designs.
Floydshayvious - More to come…
Chris Spade - I feel like ryan meat when talked about in the 3rd person which is weird on lots of levels. Glad to hear I’ve earned some street cred, though.
rmani005 - Thanks.
ZBrushWorkshops Explainer # 2
Sometimes when creating materials we try too hard to make the material do everything. Here is a lesson I learned from production work: let post take care of it!
There is so much you can do in post to beautify an image. That is true for photographers and for vfx artists. Post work is not cheating. Its a natural part of our process and an important tool in our toolbag.
Digital sculptors “photograph” their work so it helps to have a full grasp of what professional photographers do to make their work look better. Here is a small process image to help explain how you can get much of the specular effect with just a few adjustments and the Lens Blur feature in Photoshop.
More to come from the upcoming ZBW Rendering Workshop.

“Damned with faint praise! So it goes.”
My comment was not about Froud but I don`t feel like explaining anything, your answer above is too cool.
