3 Huge Jpegs on page, please give it time to load…

this is what my desktop looks like right now

if the stick works as the X-keys I have, it goes between your keyboard if PS/2, or plugs into your USB. either way, it records any keystrokes, or keyboard combos. I suggest it to any power user.

I have the desktop version and professional version, both PS/2. I’m interested in the one with a jog shuttle, and would get that one, if I wanted 1 more.

No mater which you get, I’m sure you’ll be happy. Maybe even happy enough for 2.

–ADDED–

They have remove-able caps where you put in the text you want, on paper. Use colored paper if you like. both of mine has an upper key, and lower key mode. Like shift, but it’s a toggle that you assign to any 1 key. all non toggle buttons can have 2 keys.

Cool deal, thanks for the info gamemaster

i think your really complaining about nothing.
windows xp should use about 100megs of ram and not more.

the explorer process is between 18-24 megs of ram. the rest are networking, and processes that run some part of windows. if you bought your machine from a store you will have a LOT of useless processes/apps running in the background. for example i have 230 megs of ram used at startup on my laptop because it came with so many useless things installed. its not windows to blame but the maker of my laptop. at the same time, the average user might actually think these processes are useful for them. ( like for example: the drag and drop burn dvd application ( which i almost never use, so its turned off )

i dont see how the operating system “is always in your face” its like any other OS really.

on OSX youll either use finder or the bar on the bottom to find your application… on windows you use thee quick launch icons on your taskbar… or icons on your desktop…

no matter what you do you will still be forced to “find” your applications… even if you right click your menu in other OSes you will still have to navigate to the application you will want to use… or click the icons on your taskbar thingies.
same shit really.

i dont see how its not being efficient. you point and click on all the Oses

you can always right click on the taskbar and choose “lock the taskbar”… if you unlock it you can make the quicklaunch 3 icons small. so you have only the apps you use the most in there… and rest to be accessed through the arrow button. so you can remove explorer/show desktop if you need, and have the rest show how you want. you just have to organize it to your liking.

i actually like the right click on windows. the way it works is a bit different than on other oses. it just brings up the properties and things you can do over whatever you have right clicked. its soo simple, that i dont see what there is to complain about.

on other OSes you have pretty much said it yourself… your forced to always “configure this… and configure that…” and then theres the process of finding and constantly updating files for your applications that you want to use ( for example wings on linux is a pain in the butt to work, because its got a few dependancies, and they always get updated… ) so if you get a new version of linux, you will also need to find those dependant files…not what i call fun.

on windows i never have that problem and its nice for those reasons. simple to use, and it runs all i need. OSX while nice has its own annoying problems. the constant nagging because you didnt do something the way IT likes. like unplug a device without pressing eject and OSX will nag to you that you could lose your files that you just copied to the device… on windows you never have problems like that.

i guess if you constantly look for specific text files it makes a difference, but for the most part you will be spending your time working in application X and not always looking for file A, or file B…

I like Expose on the Mac, keyboard or slide to a corner and all open windows show on the desktop, or hide all open windows, really cool.

do some serches on Google for context menu. I’ve seen several articles to edit these, and even some apps to do it. In order to do it manually, I think it requires changes to your Registry (Regedit.exe)
I haven’t done this myself, but somebody added a drive to my SendTo section, so I know it can be done.

On windows, this is called “show desktop”

Hi, ambient-whisper

well if you like it there is no reason to change it

I personally don’t like XP shell…

As fas as my OS is concerned, I bought windows XP separately from my computer… I don’t allow OEM version of windows on my system… Nor do I allow the factory restore disks restore BS applications… I have just a Raw version of windows XP, and I manually add my device drivers, an run TweakUI from Microsoft to achieve total minimalism…I disable allot of thing in windows that I don’t use.

I also have a few accounts on my system for various tasks…

For backup, I have a vanilla version of windows XP, no whistles or bells… then I have Black box account with all the whistles and bells, then I have a Video game playing account, which is TOTALLY MINIMAL… it has nothing to speak of… I used the device manager to make a Lean system, and I have disabled un-needed things, just stuff relevant to game play (It makes a BIG diffrence)…

As far as production is concerned, I cant go back to the old way of hunting for the start button… or littering my desktop with Quick launch and Icon shortcuts… nor do I like clogging up my ram by assigning hot keys for tasks…

In black box I don’t even minimize windows anymore, I just leave them open and switch desktops…

this way I can keep relevant programs on the same desktop Eg… On my first desktop I have it set up as my communication center…
I have a Radio station list, Win amp, E-mail client, and X-chat there all opened and positioned on the screen… when I need to do any INTERNET tasks I switch desktops with my mouse wheel, or by bumping side of screen.

this way I don’t have to “Juggle” windows from the task bar, and resize/reposition them, they are always there open and ready to go…

It is like having 4 monitors…

I can have Brush open full screen, paint shop pro, and my choice of UV mapping software on another Desktop, all sized and fitted… It takes me less system recourses to just leave them open… minimizing and maximizing suck lots of system recourses to redraw the window. the way BB4Win is set up your GFX card thinks you have a 6 foot wide monitor, and once the window is drawn that is it…one good trick I have learned is to get all my application I am using open, and in position, then I run a RAM defragger/optimizer… I sometime gain 3-5% depending on the applications I am ruining.

As far as the right mouse button is concerned, it is Way faster to get where I need to go, and to do the tasks I need…

I have bad wrists from using mouse too much… the menus save me from a bit of pain, I can get into my Zscript folder in 2 clicks rather than 14 clicks, plus I don’t have to wait for windows to Draw new window/Icons… it is just a text list. sure I can make a shortcut on desktop, but that is a waste of disk space, and I only need to get into My Zscript folder maby once a month… and Icons get covered by windows…

I have quite a few different folders I constantly use, Models, textures, download, upload, HTML, VRML, notes, Etc…
instead of having Icon shortcuts that my windows can cover and hide,I only need 1 pixel of the desktop showing to access ANYTHING on my entire system with the right click menu I have written. I don’t have to reposition the windows to see Icons under them.

I have shortcuts to Heavily used folders/applications right there, my entire control panel, my start button menu, my shutdown/log off menu, my INTERNET favorites…

I guess the BIGGEST thing I like is that it turns the Window$ key into just a modifier!! it doesn’t interrupt anything anymore when I accidentally hit it…

In Brush I CONSTANTLY was hitting the windows key trying to hit ALT- or Control… the way it is now, if I hit it it dose NOTHING! in the past it would knock me out of Brush, and make me loose my train of thought… version 1.55b used to crash when when start menu popped up.

Black box is definitely not for everybody… it is allot of work to set up…

But:

It Looks AWESOME!

Smaller Foot print in memory (even smaller no that I use BBmemshrink  :+1: )

fast access to entire system, all I need is 1 pixel of desktop showing.

It is Fully configurable, I can add or remove features I don’t need…

It works the same as my Linux version of Black box, sometimes it is hard to tell which OS I am in.

Some programs load faster.

Everything can be configured and tweaked… it is an open source project, I can re-write the entire core if I needed to… Windoze I have to wait for new version, and just hope for the features I want…

Everything on desktop can have Auto hide, and transparency, to keep it out of the way. plus I can scale anything I want to make it smaller or larger…windows task bar has to stay Opeq, and there is no way to make it smaller… and if it has to run entire span of screen…Quick launch bar dose not have auto hide feature when it is detached. Icons have to stay all the same size also.

well I can go on and on about this…

Black box is not for everybody… especially people who like Windows the way it is…
it is not for NON-DOS users.
Nor is it for people who don’t like tweaking things…

I can guarantee that if it is set up correctly a user can access folders and files faster and with fewer clicks… plus they don’t have to hunt for Icons or start button. users can define command line switches and options to make things easier.

there are ways to get windows to do allot of what I am talking about with other applications so you can still use the XP shell… there are Numerous Virtual desktops out there… there is a way to modify the desktop context menu, and there are ways to reduce/defrag system ram… Win XP is still a good OS shell in my opinion…

just not my OS shell of choice

Thanks for the comments ambient-whisper ,

BTW,

YOu dont have to replace your shell to get virtual desktops BTW…

If you have an nvidia Graphics card you just have to turn it on, or download and install from their website…

Here is an open source one that I use in my windows XP shell:
http://virt-dimension.sourceforge.net/screen1.png

that is virtual dimensions, has alot of features like blackbox… it is resizeable, and you can lock it on desktop, with always on top toggle, and also lets you drag window icons between desktops… all desktops are skinnable can have 4 wallpapers (waste of memory) or 4 colors to aid in navigation.
It also adds features to your windows, like Transparacy, always on top, and roll up (shadeing)…

you cant bump edge of screen tho to get to diffrent desktops, this somewhat defeats its purpouse beacuse you are hunting for the Virtualdesktop window, and if you are doing that anyways it is just as easy to click a botton on the taskbar… there is another virtual desktop called virtuawin: http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/
This is just like BBedgeflip, you can bump edge of screen and it switches to that desktop… but it realy lacks in the way you see the desktops, you only get 4 buttons like the Microsoft virtual desktop : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
the micro$oft one has 4 desktops to choose from and has cool zooming effect… but realy sucks the ram!! especialy if you have 4 wallpapers… microsoft virtual desktop only has 4 buttons, you cant realy see what is on other desktops… the above address is where you get Tweak UI BTW… be sure to get that to further customize your system…

There are LOTS and LOTS of Icon trays/docks out there also… some are exactly like BBslit, with time weather calender, detatchable Icons, Edge hide, alpha transparacy…
some even incorperate a virtual desktop, and are skinnable… just do a google search and pick from thousands of them…

I like them all wraped up in my little BB4win shell… Black box has everything I wanted and more from my windows shell… I realy feel in control of my system… it looks and acts exactly like I want it to  :+1:

Polaris30, do you use 1 or 2 monitors? I use 2, and never really thought about using my NVidia card to do multiple desktops. I always knew the option was there but ignored it. I’t been a long time since I used UNIX, so I forgot what multiple desktops was like. Gonna give it a second chance. Wonder how it will retain dual monitorness, since I use 2 cards to attain that. (the card I got only supports flat-screens for 2nd display. grrrr, it should have said that somewhere!!)

Let me say how I have my XP setup, for others that may have XP gripes like you, but don’t know how, or don’t want to go to the trouble of a new shell.
I customize my start menu, and ignore the program folder, and leave that for installs. so I put all my main apps, and shortcuts to frequent folders on the start-menu. by default, the first letter will always activate an icon. If it’s the only 1 with that first letter, you simply hit that key. you can also have folders in the start menu. On mine to get to Zbrush it’s just, Start>Z 2 keys, not bad at all. with my x-keys, it can be just 1, if I cared enough. 3-4 clicks tops for nested items. Zbrush was nested in a folder called 3D, so in that case it’s just Start>3>Z. I have a folder for folders shortcuts also on my start menu.
I never use my desktop anymore to keep stuff, it’s all in the start menu, or quick launch. this way I have keyboard shortcuts to navigate around. I use the right context for many things, so I couldn’t live without it. and if the Start-menu opens too slowly for you, I read how you can reduce the timing of that to 0, which by default is 4/10 of a second. But you have to alter your Registry to do it.
so basicly, to not alter XP and have fast easy access to whatever, learn to utilize keyboard shortcuts. If that is too much, buy X-Keys and your life will be even easier.

only 1 thing would make my life even easier. If the Hibernate feature worked for me. It works on my laptop, but not my desktop. If you don’t know what Hibernate does, I’ll tell you. It allows you to turn off your computer, without closing anything. Basicly saves it all to the HD, and will start your computer, with everything open. I hate having to re-open stuff, that I was working on. Sometimes I just leave the computer running, to prevent the hassle.

BB4 win has windows memory like in IceWM

you can have certain windows open to a certain size, and on a certain desktop… so every time you open it it is where you want it…

My hibernate dont work either,

anyways, I am not sure what the Nvidia virtual desktop is like… I suggest trying the first virtual managerI mention, if you dont like the Nvidia one… look on teh plugin page, there are some realy cool plugins… Here is one they dont mention tho…
http://www.vendomar.ee/~matti/win32wm.html

it can run stand alone or part of the virtual desktop as a plugin

it enables one of my favorite UNIX/LINUX features…

It lets you hold down ALT-LEFTclick anywhare on windows and drag window… and alt-RIGHTclick anywhare on window to resize it  :+1:

the way it is now you have to click on the TITLEBAR to move/drag windows…

This is one of my favorite parts about UNIX/LINUX windows managers…

BTW, some virtual desktop managers are nice to dual monitors, BB4Win is one of them, I am not sure about the others…I dont have a double headed system yet… (next week sometime I will!!!)

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> you can have certain windows open to a certain size, and on a certain desktop… so every time you open it it is where you want it… <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
can this open the recent files also. Just opening the app is not enough.

Someday this won’t be an issue, since well all have Magenetic Ram. In the works by IBM, it allows you to save things to ram, without constant power to keep it in ram. Thus you can turn off and on your pc and nothing changes.

Oh, BTW, thanks for the XP PowerTools link.

well, If you have certain number of programs open for certain tasks you can always make a batch file, or place them in your startup folder…

batch file would be better, because you can execute it any time…I usualy leave my start folder blank…

as far as recent opened applications and files, I am not sure… I will go and look around, maby there is a way to do it in blackbox, or perhaps a free running application… the only way I know of now would to be to make a shortcut with a commandline switch for the program to open the document/file in what ever application my shortcut called…there might be some DOS switch for “open last edited/opened document”…

Wish hibernate worked on this system,

it is funny, in Linux it works fine, just windows has a problem with it…

it is definately a feature I want working tho… I am gonna go do some reading…

be back later…

once again thanks, Polaris30 for pointing out the Xp powertools. I decided to be a guine pig and test out the Nvidia multi-desktop and the powertool version and some of the other powertools.

IMO, the windows powertool version of multi-desktops is the better of the 2. Built-in hot keys and multi-desktop preview set it apart. I’d also suggest anyone to tryout some of other the powertools that suit them.

Cool deal!

Glad you like them

THere is one powertool I suggest everyone to check out, that is Tweak UI…

It lets you disable/ delete unwanted features… can realy streamline your system somewhat safely…

I love not haveing to have recycle bin on desktop… I dont get nag screens anymore for delete file… it just delete’s it  there is a bunch of cool fixes in there

This Virtual desktop can almost be used as a task bar replacement…
http://virt-dimension.sourceforge.net/

it shows all 4 windows and all the programs running in them , you see the same Icons that are usualy in the taskbar, this is why I say you can somewhat replace taskbar… it also lets you drag windows between desktops.
it also adds a bunch of Unix like functions to the windows, stay ontop, shade, and view on all desktops…

there is also a function called Send window to: this sends window to whatever desktop you choose… Just like Linux KDE or IceWM…

you get to the enhanced functions from the Icon on the windows Titlebar…think it dose transpaent window also

PLus user defined Hotkeys 8)

i’m cool with the powertool version of the multi-desktop. 1 thing about it, is that it’s seamless. all your programs are still in your taskbar. Basicly what this multi-desktop does is keep track of what is maximized in each desktop. This way there is no need to move apps to another desktop, just maximize it. and the hotkeys are great, since they use the never conflicted start button. Start+(1,2,3,4) for the desktops, and start+v for a 4-way split screen of all your desktops. You can also have the 5 buttons on your taskbar, but the hotkeys are simple enough.

Are you continuing to use X-Keys? Can you share your Legend-Template?

Thanks.

Greg

Something that very few people actually utilize in Windows is the Taskbar.
I am one of those few people.
It is way more powerful and effective than it looks.
But a must, is the Computer toolbar.
It is the quickest way to browse through your whole pc in a matter of seconds.
Then just let the Taskbar auto-Hide when not in use.
So that way you can stretch the Taskbar out and utilize half your screen if want, and when your done it just hides and stays out of the way.

“By the way, thats a custom created wallpaper done in Maya”

Im pretty late regarding this thread, but have you tried autohotkey?

Ive posted my personal startup script below for reference, just some small examples what you can do with it:

-you can assign shortcuts to individual folders, which i mapped to middlemousebutton.

-you can do autolookup of marked words in a english dictionary via shortcut

-you can make the script automatically replace full words for your shortcut of choice, e.g. write “ty” which will automatically replaced by “thank you” or whatever.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what you can do with it. and its free.

Note: In Windows Explorer, if “View > Toolbars > Address Bar” is
; not enabled, the menu will not be shown if the hotkey chosen below
; has a tilde. If it does have a tilde, the menu will be shown
