If you don’t animate=disregard it.
If you have Windows 95 and 500 mb hard drive=can’t use it.
Anything in the middle is subject to your individual purpose.
Hobbyist= forget about it.
Looking for a job in the industry (animation)= have to know about it.
In addition to what everyone else has already said, I would just add that good edge loops are helpful when posing a character, so even if you have no intentions of animating it’s still good for deformation purposes. This means bending knees and elbows, creating blend shapes for the face, etc.
