Those Mass Effect models are all very smooth. Is this before adding 3D details like scratches and wear, or is that done entirely with textures?

I’ve always wondered how you get maps from such complex models. Like with that Kai Leng model from Mass Effect 3. His outfit is clearly made of multiple plates of armour, do you have a system for baking multiple objects onto a single map without having them bleed into eachother?
