Wow this is fantastic! This piece of art gets my full marks! I swear that she has a living character inside. Absolutely top row work. Congrats man!
@SuperHer0: Thanks a lot! Thanks for pointing out, VRay SSS is a little tricky to work with.
@Aberrant: Glad you liked it! I mostly used VRayMat, Vray SSS and VrayBlendMaterial in additive mode to get better specs for skin. I think VrayMats are pretty straight forward, but in order to get the SSS work right you have to be a little scientific, a lot more scientific than Mental Ray I think. One of the problems I ran into was getting the scattering to work. I used VRay Physical camera as my main render camera. It has ISOs and everything set according to my lighting setup. So it was picking enough light so I assumed everything was ok but the SSS. But then I realized that I need to adjust my camera first and light intensities second (which makes a lot more sense if you think about it). It was not the SSS that was not working it was the light intensities that was low, so that was the reason it was not scattering
Also for displacements to work properly I think you need to adjust your mid value to 0 which is 0.5 in default for 16 bit displacement maps. When you are working in Maya or similar, you need to enable your negative colors. (I do not really remember how but as far as I remember in the render globals or vrayAttrs there was a switch for that, really simple stuff). In order to get the surface smoothness, you need to add VRay attributes to your mesh which has displacement maps and enable surface continuity there.
