Great stuff, awesome to see you here!!!
MD

Thanks for the warm sentiments everyone! MD, great to see you here too man! you are forever my art sensei.

@discmage, wow, what can I say but thank you! I am humbled by your words.

We have milestone coming up at work, so I’ve been spending some late hours at the office lately, so not a lot of time for sculpting stuff outside of work. Last night, I just said screw it and started sculpting a new creature. He’s still in the blocking stages, but hopefully I can shape him up in the next session. C&C are always welcome and appreciated!

hey, hows it going again!

Thought I’d throw you a link to a character I have been working on with your process. I’ve figured out a couple of other brushes I find extremely useful too…but maybe because I don’t know of better ways to do specific things.

The MAH Mech A brush is really good for making more right angle lines/grooves, I still haven’t got used hard edge stuff I guess…but I find it is good for internal grooves etc. then with a pinch tool its really handy.

That said feel free to have a look  And thanks again, you’ve sped up my process significantly (I’ve made this guy over the course of a couple of days based of a template mesh I made ages ago). Hopefully with LOTS more practice I can increase my speed significantly more.

The character in question is the last image posted (Not the cel shaded one)

Had a crash during an hour long session trying to update the headless sculpt. I spent time figuring some stuff out, and hopefully I can get back on track when I pick it up again, or maybe try something cooler. I don’t blame Zbrush for crashing – all programs crash from time to time! I didn’t save, so I only have my self to blame. Boo me

<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/17740437[/vv] @discmage cool to see your progress. Thanks for sharing it!

Hey Danny, congrats on Top Row man ! Awesome works

Ciao Cézar Thanks man!
Here are two demo movies showing a head sketch in an hour:

Still struggling with the design of this guy. I’d like to get him to a good place by next week when I have a little time to finish him and start something new.
C&C always welcome and appreciated.

It’s good. What’s to struggle? Just add some detail, he’s done. Fantastic form!!

Really cool, the way you block out creatures is amazing! its so fast.

Thanks gentlemen. here is the fifth session for this guy. He was really fun, and though there are some things wrong with him, I learned a lot. I will maybe take one more stab at him, but not for a few days.

amazing man, I love your work

Thank you for these tutorials, always interesting to see someone else working. I’m using similar methods but not exactly like on your video.
Best wishes, excellent thread. :+1:

@ doses22 Thank you so much. An incredible compliment! I’ve seen your site, and I am a fan of your as well.

@ michalis, thanks as well. I don’t really think of these as tutorials mostly, just capturing what I’m doing. I look back on ones I made a year ago, and I’ pretty ashamed. Hopefully, next year, I’ll be ashamed of these as well

Here is the blocking phase of a new character loosely based on the designs of the Amazing Adam Hughes. The original design can be seen here: adamhughes.deviantart.com/#/d35a1fm

I’ve been following this thread and those head tutorials were stellar! Thanks again for posting those. Your efforts to give tutorials freely is a rare and greatly appreciated thing.

When I grow up I hope to to do the same, apart from the fact I’m probably older than you  I guess its what you get for changing design focus AND careers too often. ‘Back in the day’ I did do a few tutorials on unreal tournament 3 though, and subdivision modelling…ah, those were the days…ahem anyway, moving along…

I was wondering is there any reason you use Clay Buildup over Clay?

Also, I’ve noted that Move Elastic (I think its called) is good for things where you move for large shapes…as it adds topography as you stretch, that may come in handy to any who stretch shapes a lot. I find in some cases Move makes the topology too sparse in some areas while too dense in others.

I’m still trying to figure out the best process for my major personal project…basically mass producing great looking characters…I’m thinking a mix of kit bashing individual heads on ‘standardised’ bodies or something.

Do you use Zbrush to retopologise or a different program? I checked out Topogun, but I’m a little indifferent in regards to its process in regards to just using what Zbrush has. Staying inside the programs has its benefits I think. The UV Master seems fantastic too…so yeah, still playing.

I’ll shutup now, but thanks to you you’ve reinvigorated my zbrush passion…obviously  Cheers! And keep up the good work

Thanks discmage! IDK, I’m quickly creeping in to the old fart category in terms of CG.

As for brush choices, I like the “feel” of clay buildup. I used to like clay tubes in 3.5 a lot, and to me, clay buildup feels like a refined version of that. I used them both the same way, to build or destroy volumes.

As for Move topo, I do like that it seems to have a broader fall-off and drags some of the topology with it, but I also like how it will move one mesh and not another one next to it. So if you have a head and neck, and are adjusting the position of one, and want to leave the other, no need to mask, move topo should only move the one you click on, and leave the other. Move will mush around whatever is under the cursor on both meshes (sometimes useful too).

As for retopo, I have not tried the Zb retopo in a while, but honestly, I just dig topo-gun a lot for that. I like the speed of it.

I’ve been using Zbrush for a few versions now, and I still feel like I’m finding things in it all the time that make sculpting so much damn fun.

First of all, all I see are white boxes. Are those movie files you have in your posts? Not everyone can see those.
I have to say, the feet on that guy are sooooo awesome…

Maybe I’m using topogun wrong then…I’m having a hell of a time getting a fast pace out of it…well, in comparison to say what I’m use to with 3D Studio Max’s base modeling tools.

Do you happen to know any good tutorials for a topogun retopo? I saw one that had the basics on CGBootCamp…I think it would be good for heads and what not, but hands and feet are a royal pain! Might have to stick with what I know on that maybe…I’ll keep looking around and see what I can find perhaps.

Here is a minor update to the Monkey dude. Still lots to do. C&C Welcome and appreciated as always.
