Conallwylde, I know what you mean as I had the same problems when I started the project. I wanted to stay within ZB for all the modelling. The key to it all is a retopology. To do the basic shape of a helmet you can create a sphere or cylinder and then edit the objects topology (as the sphere or cylinder already has a similar shape to a helmet at the top).
e.g Create a sphere, draw on some new topology so that your new topology covers the top half of the sphere and then pull the sides down to create a helmet shape. When you create a new mesh from the topology you can then edit it more.
If that is too complicated for you I’d advise you to use a 3d package like Hexagen, Cinema 4D etc and simply create a profile and then add a sweep to it.
