Ok, not all of these characters have four legs… Just the first two of them… Are they copying your friend’s work too?!?

well i really didn’t want to attack you!

im sorry if it seems that way, but it looks realy like you put that concept like your original, or maybe its just my bad english, so im sorry for that!

i suggest that you should just mansion someday to other of your works, that you feeled inspired by seeing such stuff, doesn’t matter where or when and that you wanna give your design on it…

you know what i mean? so nobody can come and start a discussion about your work…

im sorry again for using the wrong words! i really didn’t wanted to attack you!

i just wanted to mension that this concept is not original…

so sorry

No problem man :+1:
No harm done.

I didn’t say I was inspired by any of these other artist’s works because I didn’t use any of these images as inspiration. I just found them now on the net to show you.

I agree there is a big similarity with the overall shape of that Rhinotaur you posted, but truly all I had for references were a ton of pictures of real rhinos and human anatomy pictures and books.

I wanted to create a hybrid, such as the Minotaur or the Centaurus, I was actually going to make a Minotaur, but I didn’t want to use hair and fur, or alpha planes (I’m a bit lazy), so I thought of making an animal with bare skin, such as an elephant, a hippo, or a rhino. They are also cool because of the thick skin, which would be perfect for a warrior, for protection. I’ve picked the rhino because he has a more aggressive look. Later, after a few sketches I’ve decided to make it with four legs (I was initially going to make him like a Minotaur, with two legs only).

So, even though I have seen previous pictures of this kind of creature, I did not follow any of them.

I would not say that I was inspired by these other artist because I simply didn’t use them as inspiration.

I always knew people before me had created such concept, of a mix of human and rhino, the same way I know if I mix a man and a bull I will not be original about the creature, what I am creating here is this Character, not the kind of creature. So, this creature, with this proportion, with this armour design, with this axe, etc. This is the character I am creating, I’m not creating a new category of creatures. The same way if I was making a Minotaur I would not be creating the species, I would not be original about it, but I could be creating “my minotaur”.
In this case I would never say I was getting inspired by all the other artists who have previously created some image with a Minotaur. It would be impossible to list all of them.

We always see people posting Minotaurs, Centaurus, Medusas, Dragons, etc… We don’t need to give the references for it if we didn’t use any as guides… For sure we have many and many pictures printed in our brains. No doubt all the images I have seen of rhino creatures were there, on my brain’s background, helping me when I was working on this model, but I can assure you I didn’t use any other artist as a reference for this work.

But that’s ok man, cheers.

Hello Pedro,

I just heard about this whole rhino man issue. After reading the posts I want to say that I hear what you are saying about the idea being potentially universal. Was I surprised when I heard? yeah sure 'll be honest yeah. You do have some differences with the armour and what not. I also am impressed with the detail in the sculpt. Good work there too.

I do believe that ideas can be reimagined without connection. Kind of like typing in an obscure username and finding out someone else thought of it already.

I am sure that everything has already been done by someone somewhere its all about the twists and nuances. My concept was of a watermelon munching tribal rhinotaur brawler who was caught in a moment of bliss, whereas yours is an axe wielding warrior. When I made mine I trawled the boards looking for a rhinoman that was a quadriped base with arms in addition and although I found biped rhino-men, I hadn’t found a quadriped centaurish type one so I was hopeful it was new. For all I know someone has done it I just didn’t find it. Just shows that this concept in of itself has found its time.

Perhaps the best thing is to note our common ground and share our insights and inspirations with each other so that we both grow as artists which I believe is why we all post here anyways.

In that spirit. Well first as a disclaimer, I freely admit that my model certainly isn’t perfect but I have learned a great deal from the experience of making him. One point was to in future spend more time on my intricate ornamentation (which you did do). The other is that it takes effort to not make the upper body feel like it is tacked on to the quadriped frame, and more an extension of the spine. If you don’t mind the honestly intended constructive criticism I would say you might want to check how his spine flows from the rhino segment to the human torso. I think it needs a more flowing torque. A bit more of the "S: shape in his spinal curve.

On another positive note, I like the arms sculpt job in particular.

It’s kind of you to post here man, thanks.

I could not agree more with you. :+1:

It is truly hard to think of something completely new. We are six billion people all over the world after all

And thanks for the crit as well, I will consider it when I come back to this work.

Cheers!

model and detail look great. :+1:

Wooow great Job Pedro !
