New Works

…and of course a complete understanding of anatomy and how the muscles actually work and function is a must to pull it off in a convincing way.

eh, there’s a trap here. Watch out, I don’t mean you, I know you won’t fall into this.
What makes a well sketched anatomy to look like a frozen frame of a movie? Instead of a rather static Kouros statue, though a great feel of movement comes from this? Is the exact moment before movement that it’s captured? This moment that makes us free to imagine what comes next? Questions like these haven’t answered by words anyway.

Tartan…Hey …Thanks…Impossible to hit a home run every time you are up to bat…Some come close to doing it, but i’m not one of them…I just hope to learn something new from every swing of the bat I take…and I usually do, or at least I try hard to.
Kind of like relationships…Some have failed, and some have worked out great…and I have learned something new and different from each one …still learning from the one i’m in now, and it has been an ongoing experience that has lasted twenty five years now…Must be a home Run :)…Bound to get lucky once in awhile…But you’ll never know or find out, until you swing that bat…

Michalis…Thank You…You are totally right about that chance to imagine being given to the viewer…Brings to mind Michelangelo’s statue of David…A great example of depicting what is about to happen,…and how that prelude to the event of what actually happens can be much more powerful than the shot of the rock actually hitting Goliath…The viewers imagination, is always much more powerful than any image depicted…The Essence, Strength, Power, and ART of Greek Tragedy… :+1:

Wip…Motion Study… Just having some more fun with, learning from, and doing some more experimenting with this boxing piece this morning.

WIP. A Right Cross Knockdown, and A Clinch where the one boxer pulls the other boxer in close by the back of the neck with his glove and then nails him with a left hook…Just combining the different poses I created with these boxers this morning to see what different scenes can be created using them.

tho i personally dont like the style of most of the stuff in this thread i must say i dont get why only 2 stars, the stuff is top notch, a bit rough and weird for sure, especially if you just look at the first few pics, dunno, strange style reminding me of mid 90ties digital art in a lot of places, but once i say that zapata painting and how you got there i think i understand what thats all about lol

btw i assume those boxers are old school, noone would stretch its legs like that nower days if they dont want em to break like a stick, bend the knees, and dont push out your bum or the umpire might get distracted XD

Jaysus…Thank You :), and Thanks also for the input…Good points about the knees and rear ends, and well taken…I’ll see what I can do about them when I get around to fixing all the other errors that abound throughout these figures…I wasn’t planning on doing these scenes to start with,…they just sort of happened as I went along…so I just went with the flow, and did whatever came to mind as I went along…Seems to be the norm for me, doing it that way…The unexpected is one of the most pleasent parts of my day, and HEY,…I like it that way…
P.S…Yes these are old school fighters…Just like me…LOL…I gave up boxing many years ago…and I took up Karate instead…Much more direct and to the point, if you know what I mean.
I studied Karate in the studio of Billy Blanks here in Boston…right here in Quincy where I live in fact…, right before he moved out to Hollywood and got rich and famous with his Tybo thing and a few Karate movies…He was a trip, strong as a tiger and for sure new his Karate…I’ve only had to use what I learned in real life once since I learned it…saved my life…so it was money and time that was for sure well spent…

WIP. Adjusted the torque between the pelvis and torso…more compression on his right side flank muscles, and more stretch on his left side flank muscles…changing the angle of his shoulders…Also bent his legs at the knees for more ballence…adjusted his right foot so he is more grounded and ballanced…Finally starting to get a gesture now that is worth refinement…

A great link right below…Might be useful to someone in this forum…who knows. :)…Boy if I were about forty years younger and thinking about getting into animation,…I would get my rear end into this guys class, and into the school in this link as fast as I could…

Hya Spirit Dreamer!

I have been
watching the boxer progress and got very interested in the balance and
motion part and the discussion of it, annoyingly I have been insanely
busy, its been overcast for a week and a half (I’m on 100% solar power)
and we had a rather odd and very dangerous series of storms here.
If you look at still frames of people in motion you will see
some VERY odd things, lately tennis players have been the brunt of
some very funny shots that do not look so great:

hehehe… sorry, I could not resist…

I had a bunch of links that I scrounged for you but I cant find them at the moment, its been an interesting week…

More soon… if nothing else happens…

LOL Mealea…Looks like they really get into it…:D…Hey, where are you anchored at anyway, if you don’t mind me asking…just curious…Great to hear that you are 100 percent solar…Maybe add some of those small wind turbines to the mix, and then you will be all set when the next sunless but windy storm comes your way…:):+1:
Nice hearing from you,…your visits are always welcomed and appreciated…Stay safe…I know how that ocean can turn into a monster at times…been there…

WIP. Just a little Dynamic light/shade/shadow study this morning…while trying to figure out how the new BPR filter system works.
I gave up for the moment, and went into Corel Painter #10 to get the result I wanted…I wanted to get it in ZBRUSH, but couldn’t figure out how to achieve it…Oh well,…tomarrow is another day…maybe i’ll figure it out then…I would like to be able to stay in ZBRUSH to get what i’m after,…kind of a pain going back and forth between programs…I’ll figure it out sooner or later,…hopefully sooner…:)…I want the cast shadows to be darker where they start,…and then get lighter as they get further away from the object that is casting them…

WIPS…Just doing some experiments in Light Cap this morning, while trying to learn how it works…I saved and used the light setup and material that I used for this bud vase and flower…Then I used that same lightcap setup on the boxers, just to see how it would look…Just an experiment to see what would happen if I took the lighting and material from one scene, and put it into another scene…Lots of fun

BOXERS 33.jpgFLOWER AND VASE 3.jpgFLOWER AND VASE 4.jpgBOXERS 32.jpg

Better positions now on the boxers in these last 2 images, and a more dramatic angle on the scene. Feels more like I’m in the crowd looking up at a boxing match in the ring. :+1:

The boxers pose looks off to me…when throwing the right hook his arm should be following through not pulled back as the opponent falls to the ground…in a number of renders in looks a lot more like he’s being pushed over. Boxers dont contort their body that way when throwing punches

Webhead…Thanks.
G Dub…Lots of varables when it comes to boxing and the sequences that are chosen to portray…like retracting the arm that throws the punch, after the punch has landed and followed through the swing…A punch that hasn’t quite reached t’s distination yet can look like a possible push until it makes contact…The contact shots that you seem to want and would like to see are the easy ones to create, and are pretty common, overdone, and pretty much played out, in my book anyway…I’m after the shots that are harder to depict visually…Some will work, and some won’t, and some do, and some don’t…That’s ok by me…because i’ve learned something new with each one that i’ve tried…It’s called trial and error and is how things are learned, and is also what sketchbooks are all about and for…If I end up with just one out of fifty tries that is good enough to put in my portfolio, .I will be content…Plus I will have learned a hell of alot along the way…:)Thank you for your input by the way…your points are well taken by me,…just as I hope mine are by you.

Thats cool and all but if you film someone throwing a hook punch in sequence there will never be any frames that look like the poses Im speaking about. I’ve been a kick boxer for over 2 decades now and I can tell you a hook will not send a person backwards in that manner nor would a boxer throw one that way so it does look wrong. Anyway good luck with the sketches.

It’t nice to know that you have been into kick boxing for twenty years now…Great sport.:+1:…I have been into Karate for the past twenty five years or so myself…Attended the Studio of Billy Blanks where I learned it here in Boston,…private one on one lessons,…expensive, but well worth it.:)…That was right before he went out to Hollywood to make his fortune…with his Tybo thing and karate movies…I also boxed while in the Navy for a few years before that…But anyway,…Like I said,…I hope you take my points as well as i’m taking yours…I’ll get a good one going before it’s over…these are just wips along the way as stated above each post…
By the way…did you see that link that I posted above, three days ago…Anatomy of a Fight…Great link…might be useful to you…Check it out if you have the time to…

Do you mean the anatomy of a fight link?..good videos. The 2nd vid he starts off talking about the movement of hips while striking. Important stuff.

Yep that’s the one…Really interesting stuff for sure,…makes me wish I were about forty years younger…If I were,…I would jump into his class as soon as I could…especally if I were going into animation…But alas…too old for that now…my art is just something to pass the time now, and to keep the old brain and spirit from rotting…Just something to keep me challenged and to give me pleasure…which it always has, and still does… on both counts…

OCT. 23, 2011
WIP…Just trying out a couple of different light setups using a couple of different materials while learning and experimenting with the new LightCaps feature…Lots of fun and posibilities to create moods that express feeling using this new feature.

These are great! I keep looking at them and imagining how they got where they are and where they are going to end up.
Anyhow I mentioned links other then the tennis one, this one is something I found while working on an artificial life project ages ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAxi38FE8xo

And this is something I found while thinking about motion in general, its a bit generic but the use of BVH files is terrific:
http://humanmotions.com/sculptures/sculptures01.htm

I have a bunch more somewhere but I cant find them at the moment… mumble…

How are you posing these?
When ever I try to pose anything either with the transpose tools or a Zsphere rig I either crash or destroy the thing I was making.

Cheers!
