My work on Assassin's Creed 2 by Aliasfx

really really impressive.

I’m not much of a gamer. Just getting into it after a lifetime of avoiding it and drawing while my friends played. Just got a PS3 and am waking up to what’s going on in game graphics. Looking at the Assasin’s Creed work, and some of the other stuff we’ve been seeing in this forum, and in the so called “next gen” games lately, I realize why I couldn’t stand most games before. So many designs were pushing for a realism that the technology couldn’t handle, so it just ended up looking gross. I can’t stand all those cutscenes on the earlier games I’ve seen. They look grotesque and miles away from anything artful. (gross generalization that is wrong for many games, I’m sure) But that’s obviously changed with the current generation of games.
This stuff is stunning, and I find myself hugely attracted to it, probably almost in inverse proportion to how much I was repelled by previous generations of game art.

sorry for the long winded props, but this stuff is really waking me up to possibilities that I’ve ignored.

NightShocker - thank you I am glad you like the game, I will forward your congrats to the team
rbarton - thanks for kind words
silvaticus - now you mention it’s really funny because I never saw it  , my mandate for this guy was to create young skinny male, but I agree some of his curves makes him look like Putin :). Thank you for nice words.
Etcher - I am glad you like it , in return I also would like to congratulate you on your thread , I fallow it with great interest, I like your art and the way you lay it out on the forum
phat - coming from you , to me it’s a great honor , looking forward to meet you one day !
aesis412 - thank you very much
SonOfWitz - I am glad you see the things the way I see it, you know I am not a gamer either, I just love good story and beautiful art direction, you don’t have to become gamer to appreciate those things
I am glad you like it.

Thanks to all of you guys, your comments means a lot to me

How did you do the lace frills at the ends of the sleeves on the Priest character? Where they sculpted or hand drawn?

Alex! What’s up brother. Great work sir! Two AC II top row threads! C’mon ZBC!!!

They look really good for the texture and polygon budget, the clothing textures are just beautiful. well done mate.

lol, that generic head from your first post looks exactly like russian ex-president when he was young. Great characters.

Awesome work, it must be so exciting to get to work on such a wonderful game for your first project in the industry. Congratulations on that.

Bravo Alexandre.

womball - hy, this kind of details is texture (patterned)tiled around the sleeves end with alpha .
Danny - my bro thank you very much for your comment , and regarding the top row I am not worried , my stuff is probably not sleek enough YET for the top row .
broken bridge - thank you , I am glad you like it
cyril_but - You know it’s funny I actually did little search on google image and he does look like him young. Nu chto podelat, ya ne spetsialno . Spasibo za horoshiy otziv.
TiMrozek - thank you, let me tel you , it’s actually so exciting I still feel the buzz  ( in the good way:)
gtiber - thank you for your kind words partner , In return your work on cgs (space worker) and your cartoon renders is superb.

And for those who asked for some wires , it’s under ongoing approval so I should be able to post it in a day or 2.

Fantastic work! Really love the level of detail here. How did you go about making the rope belts? Is it actually extra geo, including knot? Or is the belt sculpted into robe mesh with a knot stuck into the mesh? I have saved all your images in my reference directory! Congrats to you and the team for yet another phenomenal job. (would love to see wires as well!)

Hy guys thank you all again for your encouragements. This is my last pic I post here upon several requests to see some wireframes.
wayniac - thank you , I am realy pleased you like my work and regarding all the accessoiries like belts, ropes etc… it was done with tiled texture of the rope or belt, basicaly you do small pieces of the material map it on one poly and then duplicate it around the waist if it’s for belt and at the end weldctogether all verteces. All belts and other accessories I usualy keep as separate geometry , lowpoly aspect of our characters alow us to put some extra geometry to make character look more interesting.Thank’s again
Sorry for low qual. pic.

Thank you so much for sharing your work. Although this kudos is a bit late, just wanted to congratulate you guys for amazing modelling and textures. I just played and finished the whole game thanks to this thread. I am so inspired by you all.

Awesome work Alex! It’s inspiring to see such high quality models and textures produced with such efficient poly use.

I was wondering if you could elaborate on your texturing process for the ornate designs on the armor and clothing. I noticed Zapplink was an essential part of your workflow. Was the detailed ornamentation painted with alpha masks in Photoshop, or did you use other methods?

p.s. Thanks again for all the portfolio critique and feedback at CG Con in San Francisco!

thanks guys for kind words , I am happy to see that this game generated so much inspiration . For texture workfolw it is pretty straight forward, sleeve trims if we were unable to find good quality images we would do it in photoshop with paths in black and white and maybe overlaying fabric texture on top this way you would have your alpha already and then by mixing with fabric pattern it would give it more realistic look , of cours it sound simple but you have to try it many times before you find good combination , there is no secret tecnique or trick, a lot of practice as well.
Thank you all again.

(Rig that Catholic guy and you can earn big money ! (18+) :o)
Great work!

Hey Alex, I’d love to see the base mesh that you used in starting with Zb for the soldier (posted above). In particular, I am interested to see if the base mesh for the sculpt had the shirt tails and overlapping areas represented in it or if it was brought in as a seperate base mesh (for use as a subtool).

Thanks and great work.

Yeah, that would be nice to see a screen shot of the base mesh that was used for the Zbrush sculpt (with any subtools used -clothes etc.)
