*** More about ZBrush 3.5

Good Morning Z world.
I had nothing to do with the new videos yall.
Wish I did.

The videos in the Zclassroom are great! Nice appeti-Z-er.

I have both 3DC and Zbrush, and after wishing for them, I don’t find voxels ( as implemented in 3DC ) all that big of a advantage.

  1. It requires beefier hardware.

  2. The lack of a underlying mesh removes all constraints from modeling. This suprisingly makes quite a few things more difficult. Since there is no constraint on modeling because of a mesh, you can really dig yourself into a hole, blow away forms you worked hard to set up, etc. I have found back muscles and buttocks very difficult to get right in 3D coat. The voxel based tools make it very easy to ‘fill the crack’ accidentally.

  3. Smoothing is more fidgety, this may be due to the nature of 3DC’s implementation than voxels itself.

  4. You can’t step up or down resolution, and implementing such a feature with voxels is tricky. Using the move tool at high res levels leads to artifacts. Problematic if you need to tweak a basic proportion issue.

  5. At large brush sizes, it lags hard.

Part of me thinks these issues may be remedied by a haptic system like Claytools uses.

So it it all bad? No. Between the voxels and 3DC’s very powerful retopo tools, you can use them to quickly bang out basic armatures for further detailing.

I DON’T think booleans are coming to Zbrush ever. Its not intended for that. Its like asking Corel Painter to work like Photoshop.

Same goes for advanced rendering, or animation.

But with GOZ, I think we will see integration with good modelers that support the things Zbrush won’t, like Silo or 3DC for retopo. Or even Blender.

the new tutorial vids for zspheres II look great cant wait to see everyones new interpretations and models… exciting times…

i second Crusoe the Painter on the difficulty to use 3dcoat for sculpting…really hard to get thing that are a matter of minutes in ZB.
importin gobj files that might be a bit heavy is also tricky and require a pretty powerfull machine.
I love the retopo tools In 3dc though, and if ZB3.5 got some similar tools for retopology, i really dont see the advantage of voxel…
that said, i was more impressed by 3dcoat than mudbox!especially when you compare the price…
the texturing features in mudbox are great though, making bodypaint not as special as it used to be…you need powerfull machine too though (no matter what peaple say, my machine that runs zeddy smoothly strugle with mudbox and 3dcoat, and the longer you are in your sculpting, the slower it gets!

In the end it depends on your needs and worflow, i guess.
But if Pixo add mudbox texturing features and 3dcoat topology tools, or anything similar …enough said, dreaming dreaming
I’m all the way Zbrush personnaly, because of the flexibility of that program!..

o well, not trying to feed the fanboys appetite for war lol

Thanks for the feedback, Crusoe.
Didn’t expect that Voxel-based modeling has such big disadvantages.
Nothing goes over a personal experience.

Hey guys, how can I know which email they will send the info to? I don’t remember which one i gave to pixo… Is there a way I can check?

I know I may be jumping the gun, but fingers crossed, hoping for some notification soon!

Make sure you can log-in.

I got used to ZB workflow and I have to say that mudbox texturing tool doen’t excite me so much !
When you know how ZB works, I find it pretty useful for modeling and texturing. I do some render in ZB for final image many time !

i hope you can use the zsphere armature to pose the model after making the unified skin:D

Besides Spotlight and Lightbox, I wonder what else Zbrush 4 may have in store.

Multiple texture, normal and displacement maps per Tool (by using subtools), with enhanced displacement and normal map options such as native export of 32-bit displacement maps. High-Definition displacement and normal maps from HD geometry. Improved perspective with a floor grid. Reorganization of the Tool sub-palettes to coordinate with selected SubTools. The ability to merge all visible SubTools and optionally weld the seams. The new PUVTiles mapping method, which represents the most efficient use of UV space yet. PolyPainting and masking have now been enhanced to 16-bit from the previous 8-bit. New navigation to work with the virtually unlimited zooming. Right-Click Navigation. New sliders added to Project All, providing more control over your results. Memory management enhancements give the capability to subdivide your models to higher polygon counts. New ambient occlusion masking, which can create an AO texture for use in other applications.

And if these are the new features for 3.5. So now you can merge all subtools and weld seams…? I wanna see and check that out.

Looks like I am going to have to learn more about the human body. Darn where did I put those books at?

Pixologic, it was real nice of you to post the tut’s on the new features before it was released. Gave me something to keep the hunger down.

Just a couple more hours before zero hour.

im using zbrush for that too, fr years now lol
just tested mudbox, to have a tast of what’s around, and was quite impressed by the mudbox feature nad what they were trying to do: u can texture like polypainting in zbrushm but stragiht onto the texture, without resolution loss…didnt try ZB3.2 Ao but Mud one is pretty good (better than Xnormal to my taste)
but cant use mudbox, such a pain to get it running smoothly…also hate the brushes, the are so “jaggy” and have some kind of lag (even with the laxymouse rippoff option turned on)

o well, again…maybe im just too used to Zbrush
(or it’s actually teh best programe in the whole universe lol)
where’s is my mail??3.5??
just kidding, too busy at work to even have the time to test it if we got it now lol

It tells exactly what address will be used and what to do if there has been a change.

(Thank you, moderator, for making me look smarter than I am. -K :D)

30 minutes till Pix is opening their office

Do we have a release date yet ?

Wow, the traffic is causing lag like crazy :X I’m otta here.

PS did this thread grow by 10 pages or something overnight?

Major, major kudos to Pixo for having the documentation videos ready before the software. That’ll help big time. :+1:

Amazing. I can`t wait to see where thoses new features can take me.

No one else seemed to fixate on this, but I can’t tell you how happy I was to see that the new zsphere brushes support radial symmetry.
