Looks Amazing Rick! Beautiful color too, red and green .
Your cake look better than mine! Looking forward to seeing what you will do in your 2nd year .
Happy anniversary Honey. You are looking even better this year. Lots of love from Denmark.
Don’t worry MonsterMaker, I was talking to Mr. Frank N. Stein.
Thanks for the Basil Gogos reference. Some excellent work there. Saw there is a new book out this February, very tempted to get that. The Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos
wow amazing!! i love your stuff, i have to ask you, are you THE rick baker?! that won an acadamy award for your work on American Werewolf??
Consider: If it’s him, he probably doesn’t want to be mauled by fans. If it’s not, you’re encouraging fraud.
Yes, it’s him. Yes, hundreds of ZBrush users can personally verify this from having met the man at Siggraph. And yes, he spent most of the past year posting anonymously (and then not posting at all once discovered) because of this kind of attention.
He’s very self-conscious about his digital creations, and (crazy as this sounds) doesn’t feel most of them stand up to “THE rick baker” professional standards.
I know this is asking a lot, but please treat him as you would any other ZBrush user, and try to limit your comments to the work he submits here.
If we can’t respect that line, this community will lose one of it’s better artists. Again.
edit:
Oh! Hey! I didn’t even notice the color version. I love the new additions, particularly the candle. The flame itself doesn’t do justice, though – feels very digital, and to my eye breaks an otherwise perfect illusion.
Yeah I have to second that. It’s gotta be adrag for him to have to answer to questions like ‘are you THE Rick Baker’. Obviously people are going to be curious but lets let me man show his digital work without a whole barrow load of questions.
I don’t mean to offend anyone but I think its sort of obvious that he doesn’t like that sort of thing. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).
Either way this is good stuff, whether done by a famous name or a Johnny Nobody, the work stands clearly on its own merit. Just as all art should do.
Wayne…
hey rick,
that candle’s awesome. Is that a zbrush render too? You got some really nice translucency going in the wax…
keep up the good stuff…

Hey, MonsterMaker don’t be offended by my question, I know the answer anyway. Peace.
Hi thanks for the response.
abone114, ya I guess you could say that I am The Rick Baker but here I’d rather just be known as monstermaker. I must say that I miss those days of just being this anonymous guy named monstermaker I definitely felt more free to post work and replies to work that I liked. I also have to say that I don’t really mind to here form people who have been inspired by my work in fact I like to hear that my work has had some impact on someone’s life. It makes all of those long hours that I have put in over the years worth it. I posted the monster over on CGtalk forum I couldn’t do it anonymously though, it got a really good response and a lot of are you the rick baker stuff, but I was happy to here that my make-up fx work inspired many to get into the FX industry. I also posted a couple of things in the 2D gallery which they felt quite free about criticizing. One thing that I am glad about posting there is there were a number of people who said Wow you can do stuff like that in ZBrush I’ll have to check it out. I do love my ZBrush.
lemonnado, great to hear from you again I missed your funny remarks.
tittok, yes the candle and cake are both ZBrush renders, two renders in fact both basic shader one fairly normal, one with diffuse and ambient turned off and ambient occlusion turned up.
thanks all
mm
lol…i just keep bumping ito this frankenastein…its like everywhere lol saw it on cgtalk also and all i can say is …damn good zbrushin congrats on the cgaward man!
Another beautiful job on the color monster, Rick. Yes, it is reminiscent of Basil Gogos. Thanks to the member who mentioned the upcoming Gogos book. I am the writer and co-editor of the book which I think is a long overdue tribute to one of the great movie monster painters whose vivid color work made such an impression on any monster fan growing up in the '60s or '70s.
Kerry Gammill
Hey Monstermaker, please feel free to post you work as before. There always be a few newbies that will be asking who you really are, but I believe I can say that all the people that use to come on this very forum are making a clear distinction between the “real you” and the “Internet you”. Plus, the way you’re ZBrushing ( the " Old man and Free alphas " thread for instance ) is really interesting and learnful, so don’t hold back.
Another ZBrush project in mind already ?
Bye !
Hey Gammillart, maybe its just my end of the stick, but the link doesnt show up…i can see it was called gogos_sc_cover.jpg, but its missing. Is it hosted?
i saw the thumbnail earlier in the bottom row so he must have uploaded it…but it’s not showing in the post…
my guess is the att tags are missing
wow, well i didnt mean to reveal the man behind the curtain, so ill just keep it short, its an honor. keep up the great work and i hope you keep posting them for all of us to enjoy!
Happy ZBC Anniversary MM!!
I remember when you first came onto the forum scene…I was thinking, this guy is either damned good or a poser…didnt take long to realize you were the real deal with art.
Then came unmasking, which was kewl for fandom, but there is a difference…though I love the movie stuff…I have to share that with millions of people…but here your art is shared with a few thousand making your digital work alot more personal…and you are creating for your own tastes as opposed to what someone else hired you to do…I respect that a whole bunch.
Kudos and continue please to share you digital works with us here…they are and have always been a treat on ZBC.
Sorry about the trouble with the Gogos book image in my earlier post. It looked fine in my Safari browser but when I tried with other browsers it said there was an error in the file. I finally realized it was still in CMYK. I changed the color to RGB and reloaded it. It seems to be okay now. Growing up inthe '60s and reading Famous Monsters (where I first read about Rick), Gogos was always one of my idols. Doing the book was a real labor of love.
Monstermaker, love what you did with the colors, lighting and shadows. Can’t wait to see what you do next!
Kerry, looking forward to the new GOGOS book too!
BK
Verdadeiramente belo…
OMG! This is really HIM… THE Rick (Star Wars) Baker. We are so honoured to have you post on this site. I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since I was a kid all those years ago (1979). We are truly honoured to have your great work here. I bow before thee Sir Rick. :o
