memory error

Hmm would be great if anyone knows whats happening here. I have 2 GB of Ram but always get this “insufficient memory” error (see screenshot). It often happens when having many SD levels and jumping between them after sculpting. Its clear to me that Zbrush needs to update all other levels so this will take some time. But why does it compact memory and give me this error when there is actually 1,5 GB of free RAM available? doh… (BTW this happens just after fresh restart as well)

Any hints are much appreciated.
Thank you

How high do you have your “compact mem” settings in your Preferences menu?

It’s usually best to set that at around the same amount of memory that’s installed on your computer.

hmm thanks, but thats set for 1,5, so i guess thats not the issue. Its mainly appearing when switching between existing subdivisions, not when subdividing.

Do you mean it’s set to 1536?

not exactly, but 1500.

How much free space is there on the drive where ZBrush is installed?

Have you defragged it lately?

Have you tried testing your RAM to make sure that there isn’t a defective chip?

It’s pretty simple, you download it, burn it to a CD using the rawrite utility included, and then boot from that CD. It will begin checking immediately, it takes about 30min for a gig.

Thanks for the tips. There are 50 GB free disk space on my primary partition (where i got all system stuff). Aborted memcheck after 2 passes with no errors (phew…). Also fragmented the disk, as I havent done it for quite a while.
The error is still reproducable however:cry:

im having tha same problem. I have 2GB as well and plenty of freespace. Im runnig memory in dual channel mode by the way.
using win Xp and i get the error, no matter if i use /3GB switch or not.
When I have a look at task manager, Zb usualy uses only 300-500 MB ram when this happen, so far away from my limit.

I’m getting the same problem too. Perhaps its something to do with the preference settings on zbrush itself, but I’ll have to wait until I get home to find out.

Yeah this memory issue is really annoying. It’s been going on for how long?

I have some good Corsair cards, and I still wince when I switch groups and subD levels. I can’t wait till the new version of ZB comes out to fix this issue.
