Nice work. The head looks good, but the nose does look a little high up, bulbous, and fleshy when compared to the rest of the emaciated-type face. Also you kind of lose the cylinder like form of the neck in the trapezius in back. I would consider rounding out the neck a bit and continue fleshing out the sternomastoid, that muslce that originates in the mid clavicle area and inserts behind the ear. Just some things to consider anyway.

Old guys are fun, huh? So cool that you"re making one too.
Promising start, keep it up!

Lateralus86: Thanks so much for that really clear advice. I could agree more with your input. Cheers.

MattSkinny:For sure sculpting them is super fun.

A couple of quick sculpts.

Been trying to do more body sculpts, but I am struggling to transfer what I see in my anatomy reference into my sculpts. Like the observations I make from my reference dont transfer into my sculpt very effectively. So have just posted as busts.

Good busts, and those pecs are looking good too, so you got those down.
you made some fast progress the last months, so its totally normal to run into some more difficult things.
Just a general thought:
If you are having problems with bodies, don’t simply try to depict your reference.
Think about the volumes and PLANES of what is shown, and try to realize that in zbrush.
After that, you can tweak your model with the move brush to achieve a better likeness.
And maybe start with doing a separate torso or leg etc.
I’m sure you’ll succeed soon.
cheers

Your creature work is looking real good.

Hey MattSkinny & Sean

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Much appreciated.

I’ll try your advice Matt and see how I go.

Thanks again.

Its been a while, been busy with life.

Here’s a bust I have been working on.

Be great to get your thoughts and feedback.

Cheers.

A few speed sculpts…

Let me know what you think…

They are all good, but I especially like the third and the last one, those feel very real and existing to me.
Good that you’re taking up anatomy, it’s a fight, but worth it. Keep it up!

These are great. I really like the alien with costume and the wild horned creature with mottled skin.

Sean

Hey guys

Thanks for the feedback.

I have been enjoying looking at both your work. Really impressive.

I feel like at the moment my work looks like an alien head stuck on a human body. I really want push my full body sculpting further, so that the heads do look like the are just attached to a human torso.

I hear what your saying about attaching an alien head on a human body. Can I offer a suggestion? Look at sea life, insects, dinosaurs, parasites, invertebrates, and avian animals. Do some simple silhouette drawings with a fat marker in Photoshop. If some of your experiments don’t look interesting to you, then cut the drawing in half on some axis and mirror it. You’ll be surprised at what you will discover. If you go to a book store, they usually have bargain books of animals.

Sean

O’ ya, take a look at Dominic Qwek’s sculpts he is a Zbrush member, too. His sculpts are inspiring.

Sean

Awesome advice and thanks for the inspiring link.

Much appreciated.

Cheers

A few sculpts I have been doing.

I am disappointed with the development of my sculpting. I feel I have really plateaued recently. I have been looking at heaps of anatomical reference, looking at loads of speed sculpting videos and tutorials, but I really don’t feel I am moving forward. I feel reasonably confident with faces (though I still have along way to get to be near as good as many zbc users), but my sculpting of bodies is really not developing in the same way.

For example arms and hands are driving me round the bend. These speed sculpts make it look relatively simple, but even with anatomical reference I still struggle to get anywhere and go around in circles.

I love sculpting, any help or advice would so appreciated. I really want to push through this creative block ad move forward.

Thanks for any input you can give.

I like those (fat guys face especially), but I also know what you mean.
Maybe you want to try a more strategic approach in using different brushes and developing your bodies in stages, instead of muddling through till something looks good.
I just write the workflow I developed to break through that barrier, keeping it basic (no times for real tutorials right now), sure you’ll succeed soon and develope your own variations.

Basemesh Proportions: Transpose, Move
whatever Basemeshes you use (Zspheres, dyna, .obj), get the proportions right.

Volumes: Inflate, Move
Try to get everything look decent from a distance.

Landmarks, Muscle(or Fat-)masses: Clay(buildup)
On top of those volumes, lay on those major muscelmasses in the right positions and directions (~striations). Pecs like wings, upper leg like teardrops.
No minor muscles, especially not on the arms!

Planes: Flatten/Trim/hpolish
Very Very important stage, and one that many people neglect. Flatten your muscles some, according to the planes of the body.
Important on the arms, you need to break that light. Exaggerate for a more stylized/comic look.
Don’t know good reference for that though…

Forms, Muscles: Clay(buildup), Standard
Now you can round things out, put in some smaller form changes, observe how the light wraps around your sculpt.

Major Lines: DamStandard
No small wrinkels, just those lines/folds that are necessary to mark your character, almost as if you were drawing.
Not every line you see needs to or even should be in your sculpt, differentiate.

Detail: Noises, Alphas, Wrinkles

And a little posing please :)

I think you are doing fine. Try turning the model around and analyses what you have before subdividing. try putting a black material on it so you can see the silhouette and big shapes. Do lots of research and draw out your design before sculpting.

Sean

Thank you so much for your input. I will try to put it into practice.

Matt Skinny: The detail you went to was so generous. Thank you.

Sean: I have tried to apply those techniques, but will keep persisting.

Thank you both for you encouragement and generosity.

Its been a while since I posted, but here is something I have been working on.

Love to hear your feedback.

Cheers.

And an idea for the full body, still needs a lot more work, going to add a tail to try and push it away from looking so much like a human body.
