Interview with YOPER himself!

Here is a VERY good interview.
http://www.linuxforums.org/news/article-24753.html

If you are new to linux, this is very eye opening.

I am a proud member of the YOPER team, and you can be too! Just install it, and give feedback.

I had no idea that Andreas Girardet (yoper) worked for IBM.

wonder if we will ever see an IBM desktop that is sold with YOPER insted of windows or SUSE ?

I sure hope so, Yoper is very fast… I hope Andreas Girardet makes the best OS avalible and puts a big thorn in Micro$ofts #$*&. LOL! I love his attatude twards this…

very cool interview! I am going to go to the forums and give them an “atta boy!”

Here is the link if you are intrested in the FREE operating system.
http://www.yoper.com/

it uses RPM’s, APT-GET, and PORTAGE (gentoo)… soon it will use YAST (SUSE) also for installing things… so basicaly if it is a linux installer package of ANY flavour you should be able to unpack and start the installer without converting or tweaking anything.

If this is your first linux install I suggest KANOTIX, it will give you DEBIAN after installing, and has scripts to install 3d GFX cards… Both Nvidia and ATI supported…
http://kanotix.com/files/kanotix/

YOPER has support fo alot of Graphics cards. also , KANOTIX is just a better new user system, IMHO, just execute a script and it configures-downloads- installs- compiles, and pops you back into the startup screen totaly automaticaly!.. Yoper you will have to go through a large list of graphics chipsets.

Rant on Linux and Open Source:

Linux runs well, but I find it impossible in this world to use it. It’s sort of like getting a car for free, but you can only run on the roads that support that car.

I think, on a serious note, that Linux should only be used for web serving of all types (including games) and for kiosks and terminals.

Open source in general is a great idea, but it puts professionals out of work a lot more than you’d think. Sure, no serious business is going to take OpenOffice.org over Office even though the feature set is nearly identical, but there are other fields such as web serving that are easy to find a free identical alternative on the linux side.

The only problem here is, a lot of the applications being pumped out for linux in this field are emulating and not innovating. That’s what the ‘big evil money hungry corporations do’ is spend millions on R&D, and 6 months after they release their crown jewel, some sourceforge page pops up ripping the features and calling their version better.

Macs should be used for journalism.
Windows PCs should be used for content creation and home/office computing.
Linux should be used for delivery… (ie, cheap render farms, web serving, etc.)

That’s my rant.

“Oh, but you’re wrong! Linux is the future! Everyone will be on Linux because it’s FREE!!!” Tell it to the folks who loved OS2 Warp.

BTW: My favorite is still Mandrake, as I’ve always found it to be a rock solid release for home stuff. Knoppix was pretty cool with their live CDs. I’ve yet to try Yoper, but I’ve got a few K6-2s sitting around here.

Edit: (About the elite Micro$oft spelling) I think any corporation who wa$n’t intere$ted in making money would be $tupid. They’re not evil for $elling their products.

I agree totaly if Micro$oft was playing fair…

They are totaly trying to monopolize the opperating system world. the way they are makeing so that the next version of windows has to be the ONLY OS on a hard drive, it will not function with partitions, so the dual boot days are over. hows that for “Freedom of choice”. you are free to buy either Microsoft, Micto$oft, microsoft… those are your choices in the future I hope everyone chooses well.

all you Ipod users out there are going to get the privalage of buying new drivers from Apple, because it is a “security risk” and Microsoft wont include the drivers natively…,

the new windows also still fragments files… makeing systems progressivly run slower… and raising the possibilitys of data loss.Right now you can run windows applications in WINE and the stuff never gets fragmented…

Linux is not just for servers…

Open source in general is a great idea, but it puts professionals out of work a lot more than you’d think. Sure, no serious business is going to take OpenOffice.org over Office even though the feature set is nearly identical, but there are other fields such as web serving that are easy to find a free identical alternative on the linux side.

well my buisness uses open office over office… I run a very successful buisness. The above statement is moot. Open Office is not made by a bunch of Code Kiddies either, it is made by Sun Microsystems.

without open source alot of people would not be able to develope anything, in lots of countries Micro$oft is WAY too expensive for the common person to buy…
Right now in Thailand there are 4 versions of windows XP, each version contains a few more features than the other… the Full version of windows is priced at over $400 american dollars… How is that for being fair… If you are american you can use winDoze for 75-150$

Microsoft is the reason ALOT of people hate america (another reason they hate america is over opinionated idiots like me;))
i

I think my favorite Micro$oft burn is in some south american countries…
in the Window XP installer the people have the gender choice to choose:
None
Male and
Bitch.
it has been 4 years , and they still have not fixed this, very rude and wrong error. I wish Micro$oft would move to canada, they give americans a bad immage.

without open source there would be no compitition… It seems Unix , and Micro$oft are brothers in arms.

Look how SCO is trying hard to sue, because Linus trovold ripped of MINIX commands…
well Micro$oft DOS has ripped them off for years, they also pegged CP/M for alot of the functions and commands…

also:

The only problem here is, a lot of the applications being pumped out for linux in this field are emulating and not innovating. That’s what the ‘big evil money hungry corporations do’ is spend millions on R&D, and 6 months after they release their crown jewel, some sourceforge page pops up ripping the features and calling their version better

realy? then show me the microsoft or Unix version of this:
http://wwws.sun.com/software/looking_glass/

we would never see ANYthing like this from micro$oft without this compitition…I have seen thousands of screen shots of the windows Longhorn, and it looks almost Identical to XP.

Nor dose microsoft let you use a window manager, you are stuck modding the shell.(Not in longhorn, any attemts to tweak the shell is a secutity violation… if you want to skin your windows,or changeing certain Icons you get the privlage if buying microsoft plus)

IMHO ,
KDE is much better in alot of ways, mostly visual…it also totaly sucks in a few other ways. mostly installing an uninstalling stuff.

as far as it not being able to play games or do serious CG art, you have just not tried the right flavour of linux… here is what I run on most of my systems…
http://www.rocklyte.com/athene/
everything they claim is true…
the graphics drivers for my ATI card are jaw dropping.
XSI, MAYA, and 3DS all have special tweaks in this OS for even faster preformance.
the only reason I even have windows installed on my systems is for Zbrush…
most of my other tasks I can do in linux under WINE. The only reason I dont give them more support is because i had to pay for it… I am embarassed to say that I payed money for Linux LOL!

as far as Ripping off other peoples ideas,

Michel Angelo, Picaso, and Rembrant are just a bunch of ripp offs also…
the true artist is Umfoofoo, the prehistoric man who spit a bunch of berrys on a wall and smeared it around to make an image of a deer…
All other artist just imporved on this concept… all the real credit should go to Umfoofoo
all the rest of the so called artists ,are a bunch of fakes and rippoffs.

in all reality, I prefer Windows over Linux,
I am glad linux is around to give them compitition.

there would be no 64 bit windows yet if it where not for this compitition. 3 months after the release of the AMD 64 bit chips, there was a project to make all the drivers and kernels work with SUSE… later Redhat followed with fedora core, and later Mandrake made a 64 bit kernel build.

In linux I have 64 bit drivers for all my hardware… in windows 64 I have no WACOM drivers, No drivers for one of my CD roms, and no drivers for my joystick.
I wrote wacom an email, asking if I could beta test windows 64 drivers… they told me that they where not going to do any 64 bit drivers untill 6 months after the next windows is released

I hope an open source project beats them to it, and makes better improvements…
they are really not catering to the 64 bit consummer. I think a open source 64 bit driver should help them speed up the process, and might force them to make improvements. (improvements means hireing more programmers, and provides more jobs)

What realy puts people “Out of work” is haveing no compitition… only haveing 1 wordprocessor, 1 database, and 1 spreadsheet company.

Only haveing 1 opperateing system companie is bad for employment also…
If Linux is found to be Illegal THOUSANDS of redhat, mandrake, and SUSe people will not have a job anymore.
hundreds of people at IBM, and Sun Microsystems would have to go also.

I think it is funny as hell that the only big compitition to Micro$oft is a bunch of rag tagged coders out there, who do it just to piss of bill gates LMAO!

If a bunch of “non-professional” people can make something that rivals the richest companie in the world, there is something wrong here.
they do it without ripping off, or reverse engeneering anything. they do things totaly diffrent,

And it’s starting to work.

The only reason that Linux exists is because they do it for free… Microsoft can not absorb them,or put them out of buisness SHAGGING the justice system with all their money and lawyers. (they are sure trying hard to change that, soon it may be illegal to develope software as a hobbie, you will have to pay the microsoft tax for your compiler, and you will have to work for a government/Microsoft designated software firm.) Open source GNU right now is the “Untouchables”…

If they “want to” they can Sell things professionaly in linux… Look at X-chat and Star office, REDHAT, SUSE ,and MANDRAKE…
in those few companies I there are THOUSANDS of people.

Edit: (About the elite Micro$oft spelling)

thanks for the complement about me being Elite.

Witness my prefection.

LOL just Jokeing…

I would like to try Mandrake… Do you use an ATI 9800 Pro card? If so, do the drivers install easy?

I hear that mandrake is very nice to ATI people, are you running the comercial version? or are you useing the free ISO?

If you are running linux for anything you might want to give this a try
athene OS
http://www.rocklyte.com/athene/
it is not quite as mature as Mandrake, but makes a nice desktop OS.

Thanks for the fun Debate, Have a Nice day.
:):+1:

My Mandrake was v9.2 I believe, or 9.something. I wanted to try out 10, or mandrake move, but I heard there were a lot of issues (drivers, compatibility) I’ll let it mature to 10.2 or 10.3 first.

I haven’t heard any news about WinFS that doesn’t let you dual boot with Longhorn. Where did you see this?

Longhorn versions 4074 and below look like XP with a new skin, but the version they previewed at a tradeshow conference called PDC looked incredible.

Also, the Sun ‘3D’ OS is old news. Microsoft demonstrated 3D windows effects at WinHec like 2 years ago. The Longhorn graphics engine can make the windows do anything, like flip around, become 3D, wave like a flag, and it uses under 1% CPU resources.

edit: http://www.winsupersite.com/files/pdc2003_avalon_transparency.wmv

As you see, they’ve got it so every single kind of document is being shown as a thumbnail now, so it’s no longer pictures and videos. You might need to turn your brightness up a bit.

http://www.winsupersite.com/files/pdc2003_aero_3d_effects.wmv

There are some 3D effects, and the video is from 2003. The 2002 one I couldn’t find. I didn’t watch the clip linked above yet, but the 2002 clip had all sorts of stuff going on.

Cool videos!

Thanks for showing this…

BTW you can have transparent windows with XP if you would like, here is cool little freebie…
http://www.palma.com.au/winroll/
Once again open source provides something that MicroCrumbs is still a year away from LOL just joking.

The above program will also allow you to do some Linux features, like shading and making so that a windows is “always on top” (I really wish he would make it so that you can reposition the windows while holding “ALT” like in Linux . “alt” and right click to resize window would totally rule also! think I am going to send him/or her and email.

for the transparency to work you have to tweak the settings, I suggest only about 10-20% transparency, it makes it very hard to read things, and gives me a headache sometimes… I only use it when I am needing a reference photo, and I am using PSP and Zbrush at the same time… the reference always stays on top, and I don’t have to re position the window every time I switch applications.
just use mouse 3 on the close window X for always on top, right click on title bar and it will shade, and mouse 3 on title bar will make it transparent.
there is also a tick box in the settings to have it load with windows…
you will need a hardware accelerated GFX card to use this… it is possible without a accelerated gfx card, but takes most of the system recourses when using transparency.

Microsoft provided transparent windows back in NT4 I think it was.

The videos don’t really show what Avalon is capable of. It makes Sun’s ripoff look like trash.

COol I am getting excited to see it…

BTW about the above program…

Dont use it on a window with Open GL or direct x (unless you want to see a blue screen, and have to re-boot your system.)

I did not know about NT4, wonder why they did not port it over to XP?

anyways…

I just found out that Mandrake has released its new ISO’s for public download.
they list all the links at distrowatch:
http://distrowatch.com/

think I am going to load up getright , and start downloading

LIbranet also has a new free version
