How much better is it with a Wacom?

If you set them up right you cant tell the difference.
The tablet resolution is how many lines across the tablet surface it has. The higher the res the less distance between the lines. This means tighter detail (in theory anyway). As far as 512 vs 1024 LPS. I cant really tell the difference. Its all up to the individuals technique.
Its just user preference. Its all opinion.
Wacom has been around for a while and they make good stuff. When other companies started making tablets (that were less expensive), they answered with the Graphire models.
If the prices were the same for a 9x12 Intuous, I may consider it then. But I will take the Aiptek over the Graphire anyday. The Intuous line is nice, but not $400 more nice.

Like I said I have both, I use both (they are each on a different computer here in the studio). If you use one and then switch to the other, it takes about 30 seconds to adjust.
I was a hardcore Wacom fan like everyone else. Why? Because thats what I spent my money on. When I needed another tablet I decided to try the Aiptek. I could always take it back. That was 3 years ago…

Wacom rocks. Aiptek also suits my needs and has never let me down. I did have driver issues with the Wacom. Sometimes it didnt start up, or it would draw the heaviest line all the time. A restart always fixed it.

Be happy with what you have.

Its the artist not the tools.

quote:
Its the artist not the tools.

You see this quote a lot, but let’s think about something for a moment. Hand the same artist MS Paint and Corel Painter … While it is the skill of the artist, MS Paint will certainly hinder you. Most artists will tell you that they want to be free to create and as unhindered as possible. That is why so many have moved from the MOUSE to the TABLET. If we simply said, it is the ARTIST and not the TOOL then why even get a tablet? Just stick with the mouse.

Having said that, the skill of the artist can be enhanced or set free by a tool that is less cumbersome. So, I do not sketch with a mouse even though I could. As an artist, I use the TOOL that is BEST for ME. I have tried other tablets (owned them) and Wacom is the best for me. It is well worth the price (IMHO).

I wasn’t trying to turn this into an this vs. that thread, I was just curious about how tablet resolution, and pen pressure levels affected the working environment in comparison to each other.

Mouse against tablet ?
Try to make your signature with a mouse

weirdpal,

It isn’t about this against that. It is simply discussion. That is what a forum is all about. If we were all sitting here in a circle talking about tablets the same sort of discussion could have occured. It is information. Nothing more.

Wierdpal, use what you have. Its an awesome piece of hardware.

Dan, obviously there would be a difference in paint vs painter, or a mouse vs a tablet. Maybe you read more into that statement than what was intended.
The point I was trying to make was that if its the Aiptek or the Wacom, the results will be the same. Its the skill of the individual, not who has the “best” tablet.
You could teach a monkey to use software, but hes still not an artist with a wacom or a mouse.

Well It just arrived, and I couldn’t be happier. THis is so simple to use. I’ve been playing in photoshop for a few, and I just did a little ZB. WOW. An indispensable tool. I can’t believe I put off getting one this long. I need the airbrush now. I’m Addicted.

Please tell us how the air brush is…

I have been really curious about this

Glad you like it

My favorite thing to do is molding spheres like clay , and playing with the pressure sensitivity, and the tilt…

Notice that while editing objects, you can use the “eraser” end to do the Zsub function

Have fun

I’m trying to adapt my old Wacom for use with ZB, and I’m wondering what kind of settings to adjust for best use of pressure. For example, I’d like to get various sizes or intensity based on my pressure, and while I do get some of that right now, it’s not how I like it in my paint programs. I don’t want multiple dabs, which I keep getting when trying to get various pressure. I want continuous strokes that vary in pressure.
Strange enough, my best results come from the eraser. nice smooth transitions, unfortunately the eracer changes how the tool works.

BTW, I’m a fan of both the mouse and tablet, and i think that each has it’s place.

First, I don’t have the airbrush. I’'m addicted, and want the airbrush. Two, I have not set any any zbrush specific setting for the app yet in the tablets settings, or in ZB’s tablet settings. I have a photoshop project that I have been waiting to do for a long time that is taking precedence, but I have not decided how I’m going to want my final settings in ZB yet anyway, I’m still working in 1.55b, and awaiting the Z2 upgrade for the Mac. Although I did buy the tablet specifically for use with ZB2. I may not set it up fully for 1.55b.

Game Master: Change your stroke from dots to freehand. Also play with the settings on the stroke palette.

Rafael, that made a world of difference. Thank you. With the mouse, there is not much difference between the Freehand and the dots strokes. But for the tablet, there is a huge difference. i think that should be noted somewhere, that freehand is ideal for the tablet.

Has anybody tried Z2 with a Wacom Cintiq?
I’m after buying one sometime soon.
Please let me know what you think.

Marcel use only Cintiq
He said that is marvelous except the price
