Love it!! The feel of that spacesuit and helmet is very retro meets future. Good work!

Thanks dustbin1_uk! glad you like it!

A few more shots of this recent work :

For this one I’ve modeled the helmet, head, boots and under suit body mesh in zbrush. The suit cloth and gloves were simulated with Marvellous Designer then brought that back to zbrush for some more detail and adjustments. Substance designer was used to create the tilable detail normal maps which are applied along with the materials in keyshot. I use the zbrush-keyshot bridge to bring the highpoly mesh directly into keyshot. Additional labels and decals also added in keyshot. I have a nice HDRI image to illuminate the scene plus one large sphere light for added rim. Also the final renders get some color/balance/levels adjustments in photoshop.

Just wanted to say thanks sooo much to the zbrush staff for the top row plug!! It really means alot to me after so many years of working with this amazing program and coming here all the time to get inspired by all the fantastic artist that post.

I’d like to give a shout out to all the tutorial makers out there as well. I’ve learned so much from other amazing artists sharing their skills. I’m always amazed how people can explain these complicated 3d concepts so clearly and intelligently in videos and also these really cool info graphics people are making about how they made their work. Its something I’ve tried todo and really struggled with, it can be difficult to talk about your own work :).

I know timelapse videos aren’t always the most useful videos to learn from, hopefully they can at least be somewhat entertaining to some people, most of the techniques I use to make these helmets are covered extensively by other great artist and also the zclassroom videos! !! The basic idea is to sketch out the helmet, break up into parts, then detail each part. Most of these are just designed on the fly so they can get a bit wonky and busy sometimes. Something I’d like todo more of is have a good plan and a purpose for the piece before I start. Anyways… here are my last few works of 2015!! hope to see a great 2016!! Thanks again zbrush!!

Thanks for looking!

I have noticed you use hpolish brush after the initial rough structure to get a more structural shape. Apart of that you add lazymouse and increase the z intensity. But the way the brush reacts in your model seems very different to the default hpolish brush. It seems more similar to the trim dynamic but less destructive, with more control and with the ability to keep better concave shapes and concave hard angles. Is this a custom brush even it is called hpolish?

woooow lucas arts need to hire you cause kylo ren would piss his pants when he looks at this gear.

Haha,

hear hear, well spoken!
Would have loved to see more like your intelligent redesigns in the film.

The toon renders are looking very convincing too.
Maybe we’ll see once Piggyson printing and building your epic designs as fan art

:+1: this is great work keep them coming. curt.

Ryan, helmets are awesome. Great to see how they were made on tutorials. Big thanks for all effort putted into making them. Also like the toon shader. Keep it up!

Hi Ryan, cracking work on the helmets. Do you have a design in mind when you start sculpting or is it a process of evolution for you? Any tips for a newbie…I have finally bitten the bullet and bought a copy of Zbrush (although not the bridge or keyshot yet…baby steps :D).

Cypher871: sorry for the late reply. I don’t usually have a set design in mind when I start but it will evolve over time with the sculpt. Glad you picked up zbrush! My biggest tip would be to do some kind of art everyday.

HybridLizard : Thanks! I’m glad the videos could be of use.

zeekiums1964: Thank you!

Knacki: Thanks for looking!

Altea: I use the hpolish brush alot, no custom setup, I use very little pressure on the wacom when using it.

I have finished a new helmet concept. “The Mantis”
