Happy Orc Week...

Dickie, this orc guy is coming out pretty cool. He has alot of character and I love that tarnished metal look. I have some friends who are big Warhammer fans who would love this dude too. I never got into playing the Warhammer game all that much even though I was an artist for over a year on the team that made the PC game ‘Warhammer 40K: The Rites of War.’ It was a fun game to make but unfortunately no orcs in it. Just space marines, tyranid, eldar and dark eldar forces. The tyranid were cool to work on but I think orcs would have also been really fun to do textures for. I had alot of fun on that project and your orc guy brings back some happy memories. After the release of that project everything started spinning down into the crapper for the company with every project that came next until it went out of business.

Thanks for the lighting setup too. There’s still alot of areas of ZBrush I haven’t gotten to learn much of yet and lighting is one of those areas. That 3-point lighting setup you posted looks like it could be a good starting point for some upcoming projects I have to do. Hopefully it’ll save me some time.

Great work in every way Dickie,
Congratulations!
I don’t know what else to say that hasn’t already been said. I’ll just add that I really like the lighting in the last piece and your modeling is very good!
Best Regards,
Michael

Damn! What are they putting in the water in Sweden?..The land of cute girls and cranky guys…LOL…Yes Still-Dead, he is stiff. He is not posed. He doesen’t even have pants yet…LOL…This is my first test of a whole character in Z-Brush. If you check my galleries, I have plenty of original work. I post these images to help other artists who are learning this along with me. And no, I don’t need a job making orcs for GamesWorkshop…LOL…I just like Warhammer orcs…They are fun…it’s that simple…

I get paid to make nice things for other people. I make monsters because that is what I enjoy. I let others make the pretty work, if that is their forte. I like making whimsical creatures. If ya don’t dig 'em, don’t look at 'em.

As for your comment on trying to think why I am doing things, all the stages of my work were posted for a reason, i.e. a shader test, a new way of making armor, etc. This forum is for sharing what we learn with others. The last posted image is NOT a completed work. I still got a way to go with this guy…

Now, go to your favorite room, to your favorite chair, with a glass of fine wine and put Roxy Music’s Avalon in the background and chill out a bit before you spew more vitriol on this board. This is a group of very fine people and your presence here in your current state of mind is detrimental to the atmosphere we try to nurture…

Dickie
(Wondering why HE draws all the flamers out of the woodwork all of a sudden…)

Hey Dickie I am a new user too and I greatly appreciate you posting your work. The main reason I visit this forum is to see others art work. Plus your work rocks. Please keep posting.

I see Dickie that your beautiful green monster has brought forth a few ugly ones!

It is a shame that the big green eyed monster must rear his ugly head around here but with a deluge of new users I reckon we were in for a few. Fret not, the majority still rules!! and appreciates your efforts and being allowed into the Dickie Den of Groovy Ghoulies and Experimentation!!

hi again dickie , sorry If I made it look
to bad, I tried what you recommended , filled a nice glass of wine and put on some
great music, but the reason why I posted a
reply was because I thought that you had the potential to make great things. Well If you
study art on a high level then you will learn
that people not always are so kind in their
criticism.
You are good at colors.
I watched your gallery and found many things
that got the potential to be very good.
Well you said that if I dont like it then
dont look at it, thats true, but if your character would be a total waste of time no one would reply on it. This forum are made
to make people look at each others work and
point out things they like or not like, if everyone tells everyone- “Its great keep up the good work” then what would be the meaning of this forum. To learn zbrush you answer, but to deal with computer art programs you have to know the old classic way to it. (for example modeling with clay)
“-keep up the work dickie!”

Very nice reply, Still-Dead. It’s not the criticism I object to. It’s how it’s said that is important.
By all means, please post your views. That is why I post. You comment that he was stiff was an excellent example of good criticism. Your other comments were a bit rude and that is why I objected to them.
When criticising, it’s always a good idea to point out what you like first, then procede to what you don’t like. You did this with commenting that you like my colors. (Actually, I don’t, but that’s another ball of wax…LOL).
As your comment was removed by the Mods, I can’t specifically give examples of what I didn’t like, but I think you get the gist.
Either way, think a little bit before you post and take into account the artist’s feelings. If expressed well, citicism will always be well recieved.

Dickie

I agree with a previous comment. Cool to see this from beginning to end. Great picture Dickie, especially since I am a big Warhammer fan with severe withdrawal symptoms. Would love to see you try your hand at a W40K character.

Thanks for your kind words Dickie. I am glad you and your wife enjoyed the Clownfish. I did him with 155b and texture master.
As for me and my ZB works I am afraid I am on hold. To much work and not enough time.

Best wishes.
JIM

Very nice!
Great modeling… It almost seems like it inspired by the game “WarCraft”!

Wow! Fantastic work! The shield impressed me most of all! VERY nice!

any chance of porting your orc to a ut2004 player character?

Hi Dickie,

I love that orc!

I’m interested in how you managed to fit the armor pieces onto him so nicely, especially with the shoulder pads. How did you bend the shield and position it to so nicely conform to his shoulders without skewing the details? Was this done solely in ZBrush?

Hey Dickie,

I’m a huge fan of orcs…HUGE and I love what you’ve done here…especially with the light-hearted style, subtle Ted Danson humor and most of all that armor, the armor shader and cool details. I have an Orc I modeled in MAX with Sub-D’s and would love to be able to get that cool shader on some proper armor for him. I’ll post it soon.

Anyway…great stuff…don’t mind the naysayers…sometimes talent is offensive to people.

Keep up the great work!
