Great job as always. Have you tried to mix displacements and bump maps? I have acceptable results using this technique.

so cute face expression, I like it indeed
Must … resist … posting my 8m tall ape … ARGGGGG
Really nice job, but it’s true that you lost lot of details due to the lack of micropoly displace : isn’t it an external renderer for lightwave that handle that ? (maybe arnold ?)
LW can use the 16-bit grayscale data, its just that the renderer does not do micropoly displacement at render time.
You may get better results though by just having more geom (your sub-d level being higher) than the highest polycount in ZB.
I wish Worley could do something with Fprime to have micropoly displacement in LW but i guess the engine feeds off the LW rendering core.
yes, it does, but not in 8.3 as of a bug. Only 8.2 and earlier. Not sure how great it is though. More info here

(very cool gorilla)
Boy, you sure don’t monkey around when it comes to modeling with ZBrush!
Nice modeling. Could we see the base model you started with?
Reminds me; I believe I read that ZBrush was used in modeling Kongs face for the Peter Jackson King Kong film. Can’t wait to see that one!
Thanks everyone !
Thanks Kircho, I did some tests with the Disp Exporter but I’m getting unexpected results… I think I have to read the manual again.
Thanks Darkshift, I did on this last update but I still have to work on it.
Yes you’re totally right about loosing the details joebount, with the little update, I did another map, added a bump and increased the subdivision, I think, it’s a bit better.
Yes me too spaz8, I think by the time Lightwave will work the way I want, I’ll be using other 3D packages… I already started for quite some times.
Thanks erikals I know about that plugin… the problem is… I can’t use it with FPrime and I’m a bit tired always relying on little plugins for this and that… I’m actually quite dissapointed with the future of Lightwave and I’m not even sure I’ll get the upgrade to 9.0.
Next update, I’ll show you the base mesh Webhead Thanks.
Slight update:
oh man,
this is just awesome - I enjoy making creatures!!
great job and wonderful detail!! It’s coming alive!
Thank you !
Really nice…
Itsbetter with fur. I’m impatient to see how it will looks like when it will be adjusted…
Superb work man…
Even though this is a test it looks soft, organic, alive and that fur is to die for BRAVO!!
This needs to be on the top row real soon!
Congrats! Tolu

The fur looks great so far! Are you using Sasquatch for the fur?
Truly stunning and beautiful work. The eyes of this gorilla are so deep. It’s beautiful.
It reminds me of the Gorilla from the film “Mighty Joe Young”.
Wonderful Work…
Thanks a lot everyone and sorry for the late reply… I’m so busy working, I almost don’t have free time left anymore .
A couple days ago when I reopened my mesh, I realized there’re too many mistakes in the mesh itself, I had problems with the UVs, etc.
So, before going on with the fur tweaking, I decided to make lots of little corrections on the mesh and I also did a new displace and color map from sratch… I hope you find the new one a bit better:
The ripper.
PS: 90 % of the color texture was done in Zbrush this time… also using the ZAppLink plugin!
really cool! i prefer the second one but you should use the micro pores effect of the first one, too…can’t wait to see the final result!!
yes it looks so much better
when I saw your last one with the fur it thought it looked like a mix between a gorilla and another smaller monkey…
the new one is much closer to a gorilla, it looks really awesome this way
by the way, I just came across this new peter jackson’s kong pic, might interest you:

Man that is a beautiful likeness. I’m loving the progression…
Hey, I just started using Zbrush a few weeks ago, and was wondering if you would mind talking about your process with carving in those nice details of wrinkles and pores for displacent map and bump maps. As far a critiqes go, the work looks pretty good so far, just 2 nitpicks about the shader.
It seems that the radius for the sub surface scatter is a tad too high which gives nice a translucent look, but also lowers the contrast of the color map.
The speculer highlight seems a little dull, I would say make it more shiny, but that is just my opinion.
Otherwise wise it looks great.
