GIBBON's Sketchbook

Thanks, joe55. I saw you went to VFS too. I’ve been really trying to up my skills before I attend. There’s so much amazing working coming out of that school that I’m sure the competition is high.

Been workin on some super sculpey stuff lately, but am back to zbrush now. Thinking of doing a series of character fanart from my favorite comc, Blade of the Immortal by Hiroaki Samura. My first character I’m working on is Araya Kawakami. Here’s some WIP’s so far as well as a quick and dirty comp I’ve done. Running out of juice for this guy so I better finish him soon.

I like all of your characters - especially the first one and the last one! In my own personal humble opinion a little more study needs to be put into facial proportions and characteristics (of course I am not really one to give that critique as I can never get it perfect either lol) and your human characters could use a little more detail all around, sculpting and painting. Remember that when you are working with faces - most often - it is the minor details that really bring out the “character” in a character. Wrinkles, pores, etc… How do you have your characters set up? What I mean is - Are the head, hands, and legs different subtools or are they all part of one tool that you sculpted clothes around?

I am jealous of you though! VFS is a great school. I was looking into attending there a year or so ago - but the logistics of moving myself and my family to Canada just didn’t work out so I settled with the online side of the Academy of Art in San Fran. I definitely think that joe55 is correct - you should do very well!

yeah not bad stuff for a prestudent at all

one thing though… focus less on trying to do speed sculpts, and take your time to really study the forms and research the areas you are trying to sculpt… there is no shame in taking your time to recreate something as complex as say… a realistic human head :+1:

Capa- Thanks. Especially for the constructive criticism. I’m gonna be going back to focusing on my anatomy a little bit for now I think. I would like to have that stuff a little more dialed before school starts so I can worry more about just being creative. As far as my full body sculpts go, they are one tool with the cloths as subtools. Maybe I should split them apart so I can push the detail further.

Dryn-Thanks for the advice. I was under the impression that repetition was more important right now, but maybe I need to look at what I’m doing a little more closely. I’m gonna take my “Digital sculpting human anatomy” that’s been sitting on my book shelf and really apply myself to it for a while.

good work m8y i really like ur stuff. you learning all this from uni?

Haha, not at all. I studied art for a couple years and switched to another major cuz it was a total waste of time. Then I found out about digital sculpting after graduating and have been self studying. Now I’m just beginning at VFS. Best portrait sculpting help you can find, in my opinion, are the books by Philippe Faraut.

Grrr, I can’t get the Vimeo embed to work. Here’s a link if anyone wants to see the render video.

Nice female head.
As the video figure with this dangerous chicken.
Ears, when I see ears like these in zb I say “some other app involved here” LOL
Cheers :+1:

Michalis: Your totally right about the ears. They’re complete rubbish. This was actually intended to be a maya modeling assignment, but they never said I couldn’t use zbrush. So, after a couple hours of pushing verts and being fed up with maya altogether, I took it into ZB and finished up. The ears are actually all maya, but I wasn’t sure how to make cartoony ears as this is not my typical style. Thx for the critique.

I didn’t find ears wrong, it seems that they came from another app.
You could try 3DC for base model, recent build now exports nice even no stretched quads directly from voxels no need for topology.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. I really do prefer the retop method, but I feel like it’s a crutch for me right now. I noticed this when we started modeling in school and I realized I hadn’t done much more than some basemesh’s in a long time. I 'm trying to brush up right now. You can be sure though that any freelance work when I’m done with school will be done mainly with 3DC and Zbrush.
Are you talking about version 3.5.02? I couldn’t find the download for it. I haven’t done any voxel work yet. Maybe during the holiday brake I’ll try it out. I just enjoy spending the majority of my time in ZB right now, bc I’m so much faster at sculpting in it. I’m really looking forward to a sped up paintroom.

Ok, got a project comming up. Gotta Create a super hero in 3d. I wish I’d had this assignment a couple months ago. I would have liked to have joined in the comicon challenge. Sux. Anyway I chose Lotus. She’s an angel concept from the Spawn comic. Just laid the body in real quick today. Not sure how I’m gonna do the armor. I’ve never really done such a detailed costume. To be honest, I think she’s out of my league to pull off well, but thats why I’m giving it a go.
