I think most people are into that over exaggerated style of animation. But you
know what the confinements of an endless loop present. So really, even having
him lean foreward is too much. But others will say its not enough! HAHAHA! I
think they all wanted you to single handedly make a movie Alex.
Alex,
Surely, your render resolution overhead at home is a serious limitation.
As for a looping animation with camera moves. I do this by starting and stopping the animation by copying the key-frames from the first frame to the last and cleaning up the moves at the end of the timeline if the transition is too much of a jolt. In other words, make sure your camera motion takes you to roughly where you started and use your animation software’s in-betweening to smooth the transition to the end frame, which is really Just a copy of the first. I don’t use Maya, I’ve done this with Electric Image Universe, 3ds Max and Carrara. This trick even works well with a few tweeks in Poser.
Sometimes, it helps to animate backwards. Do your animation as a forward linear event. Render out frames and reverse the sequence in your movie editor.
Thanks for all your terrific contributions, including this one, which is in my estimation certainly Top Row. You’re an inspiration, a very generous and talented soul.
Continued success is my blessing for you, amigo! You deserve it!

very nice! its such a creepy image. the animations and the effects really bring it to life. great job!
Awesome!!
thanks for showing the base meshes and stuff too.
Nice work!
Man that was great! Awesome work!
i forgot last time to ask how you did the flames, did you use maya fluids for that?
how long was the render?
i am working on a huge scene at the mo and was wondering if you had any tips for optimizing the scene to get faster renders.
keep giving all of us inspriation…!
Incredible piece Alex. Speechless…
looks great i really like it
someone mentioned it before
"it looks like a game i’d like to play "
btw:
like many others i started learning maya and zbrush with your jester tutorial,
a big “thank you” for that
Great work Alex as always, I’m watching your videotutorials on my gnomon subscription, “Introducton to Maya”, The Making of Jester", Awesome, thanks for create Gnomon.
AWESOME …no words !!!
and an extra
BuendiaCG: Yeah, I guess the fact that I started with Infini-D and Electric Image means that I’ve been around for awhile. Heh.
SadamHu: Haha… well, maybe one day.
willbrown1: Thank you and thanks for the advice. Indeed that would be the way to go… I still wanna see a camera move in there, but as each day passes I get more detached and ready to move on!
gelfy: Thanks!
fidget: Thank you!
vbss06: Thanks!
tyrellcorp: The flames are live-action elements comped in After Effects. This is simply way less time consuming and for a locked camera makes the most sense… which is why so many studios do the same thing… from ILM to Blizzard cinematics, not all the effects you see in their shots are 3D… many are just shot practically. A couple months ago we had John Knoll from ILM speak at Gnomon about Avatar, and mentioned how the dust plumes when the big ship landed at Hellsgate was done with Walnut dust shot practically, blasted with compressed air. When Cameron heard that they were doing it that way he supposedly was upset, until he saw their test and decided that it looked great… So anyway, whenever you can cheat… do it!
beast_slayer: Thank you!
gwainbarek: Thanks! Happy that Jester helped you!!!
ccastro: Thanks!
surajnairpv: Cool, thanks!
walnut dust? ha ha thats great… that reminds me of the visual effect of the clouds in close encounters of the third kind. made with ink in a aquarium.
In the past i have had debates on the differences with “physical” visual effects
and digital. being an old git growing up with movies like “battle beyond the stars” , star wars , bladerunner, alien etc i was used to the guys at ILM making really “realistic” looking models and sets . Since those days everything has gone digital which in some ways is better but in others not.
Personally i think it doesnt matter how “photoreal” you make a visual effect if you cant get your brain around the concept it still looks “CGI”.
One of my goals in learning digital stuff is to try to get that “analog” feel to my renders just like seeing the spaceship in “Alien” for the first time. That looks more “real” to me more than any hyper realistic 3d model.
at tippett the majority of FX work was shot practical at the tippett stage.
if it could be shot live action it would be.
good job dude.
cheers
Remember LOTR? It had tons of CGI. However, I saw a documentary where Peter Jackson said his first priority was to get as much of a shot as possible in camera before to resorting to a digital solution.
John Knoll has to be one of the smartest effects supervisors working. With his track record at ILM, he knows all the best tricks, digital and practical. I’m surprised Cameron had a hissy; after Pirates of the Caribbean and the whirlpool in the last sequel, questioning John Knoll’s decision seems silly. Glad it was approved; it looked cool!
John Knoll: The man that invented Photoshop is always right.

Man this is scarier than if the guy was jumping at me. Powerful presentation man. I guess this is the new way of presenting 3d models. in context and alive. Wonderfull.](http://%3Cfont%20color=%22#9A9A9A%22%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%3Cbr%20/%3E%0AMan%20this%20is%20scarier%20than%20if%20the%20guy%20was%20jumping%20at%20me.%20Any%20this%20are%20my%20suggestions.%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%3C/font%3E"] Anyway this are my suggestions.](http://%3Cfont%20color=%22#9A9A9A%22%3E

So you desaturated all the bright colors and blurred the background? Not an improvement.
Thank You! I know what my idle PC is going to be displaying until the end of the month.

I agree! The original is much better.
