I think you overestimate me the question you have is also the question I have and I’m still quite new to both 3d and Z-brush.
Anyway,your steps you mentioned about are the same as mine.
And I’ve never tried Multi-UVs yet but I’ll probably try sonner or later.

Those two are good threads about doing Multi UVs in XSI.
I hope that answers your question,
otherwise you of course can simply fix the seams by using clone tools or
using 3d painting tools such as Z-Brush and Bodypaint3D, deep paint 3D and so on.
