Dianna

First, robo, great work. I am really impressed and I love Dianna Agron as well. I, too, have set aside ZBrush for a crazy amount of time (almost a year) and I can feel you on the totally lost feeling when getting back into it. I’m ashamed to admit I have (had) never even tried zsketch until this week. Mac users will hate me for that  .

You have done a great job capturing her likeness. I was going to mention the one thing that I thought would help, but you addressed it in your last post: assymetry.

I was looking at your most recent update and I couldn’t detect any assymetry at first glance. It wasn’t until you mentioned it that I took a much closer look and can see it. Of course, Dianna has a nearly perfect symmetry anyway, but as you have noted, her left side is slightly smaller all around (not just a lower eye). Her smile is slightly twisted at her left corner of mouth. Try working on that and you will come far.

Also, your texture map is clearly half face duplicated and flipped. Try to note some of the dissimilarities in her face and add them to the texture in zbrush (or photoshop, or whatever). I can’t find any, but hey, maybe you can. Even if it is just a difference in how rosey one cheek is compared to the other or how she might have a tiny freckle. Here is a very large and very closeup pic of her that I found on google: http://thefamousphere.com/wp-content/gallery/dianna-agron-102709/dianna-agron-102709-3.jpg

Notice that her eyes are actually a dark green/olive, not brown. My eyes are the same way and most people think I am brown-eyed until they gaze into them (like Dianna could. ah, I can dream)

Anyway, I won’t drone on, but I want to see you finish this. Very good work, I say again.

Brian

thanks brian

i’ve actually just pushed her asymmetry a little further and have the left eye in the right place now…i think i can tweak a few things a little further as well…

ya got me on the 1 side flipped for the texturing, i did fix a few places but I’m yet to go over it and fix things up, so thanks for picking me up on it and keeping me from getting lazy…

my eyes are the same with the colour thing so I’ll fix that up…lol…and we can but dream of hers…

she is quite a difficult subject cos of her perfectness (now I’M droning…lol…) but the longer I look at the pics (such a chore…;))

i won’t put a pic up just yet cos i want to fix a few more things before i do…

nice work!! i would like to know how you did the eyelashes? is it hair and fur, hairtrix or something like that?

@Kaixo: the eyelashes are just done with standard hair and fur in max with splines as the guides…they are rendered in vray along with everything else…

ok thanks for the reply! really nice job.:+1:

here’s where i got to last night…

Changes:

  • her left eye is now in correct place…angle might still be a tiny tiny touch off…
  • put some asymmetry in the mouth (but i think i accidentally moved the middle of the top lip a bit too much, I’ll fix that)
  • random other little bits of asymmetry added
  • made the texture a bit more varied by adding little blemishes and a few freckles i found in several ref pics…
  • changed the eye colour but might have gone a little too green…lol…

I think you may be missing a bulge in the nose and taper above the bulge. It isn’t quite as straight a line down to her nostril. Otherwise can’t wait to see the hair on. How did you approach the photo texture application? I always have bad results with phototexturing.

These changes you made are great! But the new angle brings up something else about her eyes: she’s just a tintsy bit cross-eyed. Just widen her gaze slightly I think. Am I wrong?

Still love it. Can’t wait to see it all done.

:+1:

i think you’re right about the nose, I’ll see what i can do…

as for the texturing I was lucky to find myself a good set of about 12 2000x3000px pictures of ms agron from a professional shoot that all had nice even lighting against a white background…

I did it by using z project inside zbrush, there was a good 3/4 shot that had a clear view of the entire right side and front of her face and I used that as the base (flipping the picture and redoing it for the left side) then i used various bits of the other pictures to touch some areas up as well as just doing some straight poly painting to fill in a few areas…

then as was suggested I went in and added some asymmetry to the texture, adding in some freckles and blemishes, changing some skin tone here and there and making the eyebrows a bit different…

nope you’re absolutely right, I only noticed it after I’d rendered it and couldn’t be bothered fixing it then…lol…but I’ll do it shortly for sure…

she is nice! and your work is great. I also work on a human head. its hard to get good skin and to make the head alive.
I think the ears are not good. they seem to be very flat. and the eyes could be more realistc.

keep it up !

Eyes look much better.

here’s something a bit different…i had been getting frustrated with the rendertimes of the standard max hair when trying to test things out so i was looking around for an alternative…

then i remembered hair farm, so I grabbed the demo and I’m very very impressed…both with the speed and quality of it…

now this is just a rough comp of some hair over the render from before (so no geo improvements yet…they’ll come later this week)

010t.jpg

I’m very happy with how the hair is helping the likeness, even at this rough stage…

I don’t have enough money for the full version just yet…but should do in a few weeks…so i’ll leave the bulk of the hair for then…i’ll focus on the rest of the scene until then…I’ve almost worked out what I’m going to do…

just a small update, no pics this time though…

i’m performing a major overhaul of my model because i’d fallen into the old trap of making it match in one angle but neglecting the others…

and since the angle i was modeling in is not the angle i want for my final image I’ve got some major fixing to do…

also an issue was the skin shader, in that it was fine for what i was doing, but didn’t hold up once I put it in the lighting for my scene…so I’m fixing that up too…

I’d wager that by the weekend I’ll have it all fixed up and I can push on with the rest of the image…

here’s a little sneak peek at how my proportion adjustments have fixed things up…still have a ways to go though and a few areas to resculpt…

it’s also a peek at the new skin shader…which is still a wip too…

(top is before, bottom is after)

just realised i forgot to put the eyelashes in the render…lol…oh well…

thoughts?

All of the little touches you have added, while subtle, have really helped with her likeness. I like what you’ve done, and the eyes are not too green, btw. Wonderful.

That position now, looking downward, it is evident now what is kind of wrong with her eyes.

The lids should be down on the eye more, i.e. much more closed. Hooded, in other words. More relaxed.

Right now she looks a bit like she took a hit of crack.

Good sculpt though!

:+1:

@Slosh: thanks

yeh i’d been meaning to drop the eyelids a bit, and since I’m thinking of having her looking down in the final shot, they’d have to be dropped anyway…so i’ll get on that…

i’m going to take a break from this for a few days, have a few other projects (iron man suits and ww2 movies…lol…not together though) to work on…

well so much for that…lol…i got sick of doing the other stuff and couldn’t help but work on this some more…

here’s where its at at the moment…i think its getting closer…

014t.jpg

because I had to reshape the eyes almost entirely, I forgot to close the eyelids…and have to redo the eyelashes

Nice Job, I really love how you faked the hair :+1:

a word to the wise…

don’t sculpt when you’re tired…

i did the other night and i ended up almost completely ruining my model…it was all in an effort to get the proportions right…

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on it since then fixing everything up and i think its finally getting back to where it should be…I’ll have a more visual update in the next few days
