Corpse; Process Work

Alex,
Wow! I haven’t checked in for a few days and then I do and I see this WIP! Your a very talented individual! I do have a question, since your working in a water based clay how do you go about drying without cracking and shrinking, etc.? I know that most studios work with oil based plasticine which they later cast in urethane, but that’s a lot of steps. I found a product called Magic Sculpt. It works very well and doesn’t set up too fast. Unlike Sculpy you can easily add to the sculpture after it sets up. However, its does cost a lot more than any water clay especially for a large sculpture like this one.

Thanks so much for sharing your technique with us! And, do take some photos of some of those sculptures on the shelf behind you  .

I love seeing this type of progress. How do you keep the clay so smooth? When I work with it I had to fight to keep it smooth.

with some of these!

Brilliant work very inspirational! There’s nothing more I can say.

You can’t just use water and pour that over it. It has to be applied somehow and than smoothed out. I would like to know how he does this.

Several of the talented people I know use alcohol, or so I believe. Could be a different material though!

This is coming along great!!!

If it’s clay you use a spray bottle to mist it with that hydrated oxygen, and moist towel and a plastic bag over night. Works well. I never made sculptures but a lot of pottery in the past. It also helps when you do not work in a heated dry room. Or a skin can build quickly. I can’t talk for other materials. Only potters clay. Today I wonder why I got stuck turning stuff for a few years. I think it was the challenge to shape the clay on the disk. Only handles were hand made. And an ash tray in the beginning.

I recall being very nervous when I set the piece up to dry out for the oven. Drying could introduce all sorts of damage and cracks and nicks in the process. A piece added with to much water in clay slush can form a non solid joint which can fall apart during drying or in the oven… I wonder if the head sculptures have to face the same considerations. They are not solid clay to the core when I am not completely wrong… If solid then I am sure that would crack them up for sure.

And I must lack any talent Jason. Regardless how much alcohol I apply, it’s not helping the artwork. Maybe I am doing something wrong
