clipping plane question.

layer 1 fill with texture.
layer 2 fill with a Diifernt Texture.
while on layer 2 hold your ALT Key down and ~ tide key down.
ALT ~ and stroke on the canvas

I would expect that the Clipping Plane is a point of reference. For instance, I place objects, lights, fog etc… out there in 3D space and then I want to resize or zoom the document such a reference makes this a easy thing to calculate.

As far as the way the interface works in regards to moving layers in Z space I have never had a problem, seems logical to me.

You know zero, I thought exactly the same thing when I started ZBrush. But modeling is suprisingly easy. Have you used ZScripts? Open the ZScript called “Start_Modeling.txt”. Then just press the mouse button on the gray sphere which will appear. (That rhymes!!!)

Thanks Kruzr, another tip worth knowing.

It’s quite amazing how such a seemingly straightfoward topic can get so damnned unstraightforward.

EZ Hi  ,

If you have two layers filled at the Zero point then ZBrush has to make a decision as to which one is visible when they are both on in the layers palette. You can confirm they are both at Zero by checking the info palette as Aurick suggested.

If they are both at Zero then it seems that ZBrush will show the one in the number one layer position. Switch layer positions and check. Also you can displace one of the layers to -1 then that layer will always be in front no matter what the layer position.

Again the key to this madness is the info palette, it is the only way to tell what one should expect to happen.

[EDIT] There seems to be another complication which I’m working on…

another EDIT. I notice that with auto front off in the Pref>Picker>AutoFront that the info palette indicates the empty layer position as zero and if Auto front is on, it indicates the empty layer position as 1280. This does not make it easier to understand.

I think with AutoFront on, it’ll pick the ZPosition closest to the front of the ZAxis, in this case 1280.

This is a bit like space-time where space and time come into existence along with matter and energy.

Because the info palette is then indicating only where the next object will be drawn even though it doesn’t exist yet. With no object the clipping plane does not seem to exist. The clipping plane is created along with objects or fills.

I know what the clipping plane does but I am no closer to understanding what it is or why we have it…I know that Zbrush can get tricky but surely it can’t be as bad as quantum mechanics… or can it?

The clipping plane is just the limits of the ZBrush canvas. It would be nice if the ZBrush canvas had an infinite depth, but the current limits of computer memory don’t allow for that. I think you would need an infinite amount of computer memory for an infinite canvas depth, plus the fact that computer programming languages have their limits as far as how big the numbers can be. Plus, I think the 32-bit format of the .ZBR document has something to do with it too.

So, in otherwords, the clipping plane wasn’t put there for a specific purpose. It just is.

you said If you have two layers filled at the Zero point then ZBrush has to make a decision as to which one is visible when they are both on in the layers palette. You can confirm they are both at Zero by checking the info palette as Aurick suggested.

hold your CTRL down when going over (info palette) it only shows the Value when the Transformation is selected.
so this means you can not check the value of a layer because its not in Transformation .
to me a clipping plane is nothing more then a background when the canvas is clicked the default setting set the object away from the clipping plane incase the object is rotated and doesn’t end up rotating into the background

Hey Muvio, I think I’ll do that.
Good Idea

I wish I hadn’t read this post so late at night - I’ll never get to sleep now tossing these almost exiostential thought around in my mind. Gee, thanks guys.

I had naively thought I understood what the clipping plane was - now I’m thoroughly confused - though apparently in very good company!

Does anyone else need a Tylenol? LOL

no Slosh But i sure could use a Clipping Pill
so i can get My Rest to catch a Plane Tommrow
i need some 0=xyZ zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz to sleep
