Chindian's 3D Sketch & WIP Thread

Let’s see him posed! Then you can add more wrinkles to the pants based on the pose.

sgrell - Hey thanks. I dunno if I’m gonna do any more work on the pants honestly - I don’t think it’s gonna make a difference once i get to texturing and the low poly… but we’ll see - if after i normal map the low poly it still looks like it needs the detail - i may go back and refine it more.

dustinbrown - not posing yet. Doing the in-game verson. Gonna rig that and possibly get some colleagues to animate for me.

Here’s a little update on the low poly mesh.

Nice work. I like what you’ve done with the mechanical arm. I’m working on a game too at the moment and we are creating soldiers with mechanical parts as well, so I’m interested in seeing how this one turns out. I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread.

I did a lot of my work in Maya and will be going to ZBrush to detail and retop the model kinda like you are doing. The only thing that sucks is how fast your poly count rises and you dont realize it when you are doing hard surface modeling. Kind of a pain when you have to worry about keeping the count low for in game.

Im absolutely NOT disappointed! I love the details on the arm and youve also detailed the skin, right?
Z-plendid work! :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

great work man .loved the detailing and mechanical arm.:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Very nice work!!!

Looks amazing!!!

Hey Thad, Rampage is looking absolutely mental!!! So glad I’ve been following your progress. It’ll be really interesting to see him as a game model. Are you gonna make the normal map in XSI? I’ve only ever made them in ZBrush so I’m just interested in seeing your workflow.

Jeez man! That final sculpt rocks! awesome work! :+1: ! So glad you took the time to finish him!

XxDarkMessiahxX - thanks man! Good luck with ur game model!.. Yea - have to keep an eye on polycounts - but the nice thing about mech modeling is that the topo doesn’t matter as much since it doesnt bend… so u can cheat alot.

Moni-Poroni - Thanks man! Yep - skin detailed.

gang - thanks!

dustbin1_uk - Thanks man!

Captain Sensible - Hey man thanks! I’m gonna be doing the normal maps between xnormal and zmapper using projection mapping…

Etcher - Thanks man! Glad u like…

Hey guys - sorry about the slow progress recently - been working on some probono video editing work…
Anyways - hoping to finish up the geo for the in game model by tomorrow and start laying uvs and generating maps… fun!

Still WIP - but tell me wut u think so far… there’s still some areas i need to come back and refine - but i wanna get everything blocked out first and make sure it has a strong silhouette, etc… then I’ll go back and address topo issues.

Looking forward to ur comments as usual.
Bless!

Looks like a lot of waster tris in his ears. Unless you plan on having him wiggle them that is…you know, when he’s all happy he 'cause he just squished someone :stuck_out_tongue: He could use a couple more edges to the main cylinder at the elbow in his cyber arm as well I think. The 8 or 10 that you have isn’t going to hold well during the bake…and it looks like an 8 sided cylinder :stuck_out_tongue:

Great work though sir. I can’t believe you’re still working on this…I’m not saying you’re slow, just that I would have gotten bored with it a long time ago.

Looking forward to the bake down.

GREAT work! Can’t wait to see this game model working!

You retopoing this in Z or in something else?

Are you going to rig it now or…?

Looking great dude. The fingers will animate better if you do a v shape at the knuckles. It’s the shoulders that are the main problem with low poly models. Have you done much skinning? Much easier now. Used to be a horrible job.

Hey man looking good. however, there is a 5 sided face at the end of the robitic arm. not sure if you caught it or not.

goast666 - Hey man - thanks for the crits… I changed that 8 side cylinder… - good eye! (And also lightened up the ears)

dustbin1_uk - modeling the low poly in XSI - gonna rig and texture in Maya.

sgrell - Yep - I wasn’t done with the topo just yet… about to do a test rig this week to check it.

nightwalker_j - thanks.

Hey everyone - sorry for the lack of updates - been traveling alot… went to SIGGRAPH and then straight after to Venezuela for a charity/mission/aid trip - went with a church group to help out in poor slum areas of Valencia, Venezuela. We gave out toys, food, clothes, etc… it was awesome!
A real eye opener seeing the conditions some people have to survive in! Really makes u thankful for what you have!

Anyways - i’m back to work now… so here’s a little update… finished up the low poly model and laid the UVs today.

I’ll start normal mapping soon.

Hey - so did some normal mapping today… not done as yet - but i figured I’d show the progress anyways… it’s just a capture from inside the maya viewport… no lights or anything.

normal map looks awesome ! really good job :+1:

amazing, I love it.

I want see the textures, right now:roll_eyes:small_orange_diamond:+1:

This is an outstanding piece. Just wanted to point out the edge flow from your chest to arm is not so stellar. You want the poly’s to flow from the chest into the deltoid like they do in real life. It’ll aid a lot with the animation. You’ll get lots of nice ambient movement from the chest etc… when the arms move up and down. plenty of examples of this online. here is a quick sketch too.

Wicked mate! Looks amazing so far!

You got XSI and Maya! Wish I was wealthy enough to do that. But I got 2 kids and a third on the way so…

Really good progress! Would be great to get him into a game engine with a control pad and break some stuff!
