I’m new to this lark, but I get the impression DAZ has a bad name/reputation?
Gawd I know what you mean Aminuts. It does make me feel old also. I still havent got 5.5 because of the Daz Ploy. I was thinking of getting Bryce 6 IF they upgrade but they are going to have make a lot of improvements to the program. As I mentioned before Bryce gave me an avenue to learn basic 3d. So like Zaph I feel nostalgic about it and I Still use Bryce 5 a lot simply because I like its illustrative renders and texture module and also for the fact that I know Bryce like the back of my hand. I see a lot of greed at Daz concerning this issue and yah I have been a registered user since Bryce 3. They have a Lot of work as you said to bring it into this century. But unless they change some of their Greed oriented policy I wont be tagging along with them
But for people who have no other means at this time, to quote Bicc. Free is Free.
Meanwhile I will go back and play with Vue Infinite. I see true dedication with them not greed or ploys to join this club or that. Besides. I have Zbrush and Silo. Why buy their models when I can make my own now?
Angel,
The problem with Daz is the path they took when they broke up their association with Poser. This is a long sordid story dating back to the late 90s and having its roots in the breakup of the Poser community itself during that time period. There have been a lot of flames over the years. I thought the flames were out but there is a lot of resentment still smoldering. :td:
This is the first time I have seen Daz offer anything that didnt require you to “Join the Club” Dont worry about that. Its still a nice little program and all you have to do is get it at Cnet.
They have a lot to prove to me and others though and trust me, it will be a hard sell.
Thanks, Tartan, I new there had to be some reason for the slightly hostile attitude.
Bryce seems solid enough though, and for free, nobody can complain! The DAZ site seems to be just infinite addons, like virtual action figures and accessories.
It’s all a little cheesy looking to me, maybe I’m missing something!?
I’ve seen no “hostile attitude” around here.
It is all about the fact that it took years to see Bryce developed again.
No reason to complain about DAZ doing this. There is a huge user base over there. A friendly and helpful one.
And about the Poser/DAZ-issue - DAZ keeps contact to the user base of both, Poser and DAZ custumers.
Poser did not think of anything like it. Only now, after several changes of the management they try to mimic DAZ - badly done and too late anyway.
@aminuts: there will be an upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0, and it will be the “cheapest” one, according to Darlisa at DAZ.
Must confess, am a DAZ member.
Whether you belong or subscribe to places like this is
an individual choice ( sometimes a companies)
Would like however to point out some things in their favor.
I usually only see criticism here and would like to try and balance
it with what I have experienced.
Their technical support is some of the best I have ever seen. Some of their products sell for about 1.99. I have had a few questions and called their technical support line and gotten immediate help from very friendly people .
I compare this to the Poser Company’s Content Paradise where customer support is basically a joke ,with no one to call and no timely responses to email problems.
While I was at Siggraph, I purchased a program ( download) from the Poser
people (not Poser 6, a plugin). I purchased a download. Basically they gave
you an address and a serial number, you went online and downloaded it.
After I arrive home, it took about 5 days and an exchange of about 10 emails and threats to stop the credit card purchase, to solve the matter.
Both of these companies were represented at Siggraph and you could see the differences there also.
Stangely enough their booths were very close to one another.
With the DAZ people I felt, in talking with them, that they were old friends.
They were extremely helpful and made great suggestions.
Poser, on the other hand, were about selling the product and did not want
to recognize the existence of any other company.
Another small thing in their favor.
- Hexagon 2 and the upgrade were sold for about 1.99.
Before DAZ got it the price would have been about 300.
There are also a few Carraras users that are glad their program
will not disappear. - We are talking in this thread about Bryce, a program that has
been around for years and has not been sold cheaply. They
are offering it free. At one time Bryce was about to become extinct.
DAZ people took it over and are trying to make a go of it.
Know people who have spent much time and effort on Bryce.
They are glad to see the program continuing, even with the inexpensive
add-ons that DAZ is marketing. - Some of their more popular models are available free.
- They offer a program called DAZ Studios, a form of Poser, free.
While I am not calling them a benevolent institution, nor am I trying
to sell the idea of using them to anyone,I would feel extremely guilty about being silent about a company that has shown that they care about their customers and are offering some great products…if you use them.
… exactly my thoughts! A bit briefly put but yes: RIGHT!
I still agree with Aminuts on this but you have to remember I was right in the thick of things and i remember the “person” who actually made the proposition to Daz to make a program that Copies poser in the first place. That person was shafted by Daz. The fact that the person in question also shafted a lot of other people including Me before he went down is almost poetic justice but still doesnt speak well of the company at the time. I will try and dispell my prejudices if and Only if Bryce 6 supports older Registered users (ie 3 and 4 also) from pre Daz acquisition and if Bryce 6 is Firmly brought into the century. Its a waiting game for me now and at the moment Vue infinite is a superior program. I still love Bryce and hope they really do as they should. If they do i will be glad to support bryce 6 and Then i will lighten up. i remember why I left for Zbrush now. To get away from that kind of crap. sigh
Totally agree with opinion Vue is superiorl
I am a Vue hdri groupie.
Zaphod, I never said there was hostitlity towards DAZ in this forum, It’s just what I’ve observed around the net. Dunno why you picked up on that small comment?
Nothing DAZ has to offer interests me in the least anyways. I tried that DAZ Studio freebie, but without splashing out on add-ons it’s just a shell of an app.
Also, after registering my Bryce freebie, the serial number didn’t even work! Anyone else have a problem?
Anyone else have a problem?
Even loaded the free presests paks too
All works fine without problem !
Just the interface a little old age
Bryce is like any other 3D application, if you learn the hell out of it, and your craft, there isn’t much you can’t do. But, the same thing can be said about programs that are free (Blender), or programs that cost $7,000.
I’ve used Bryce pretty steadily for the past 5 years, and have created all sorts of various art with it, ironically not much of it has been landscapes. Landscapes kinda bore me (when I’m the one doing them)
DAZ is very cool with customer support, if you got a serial number problem with the free Bryce 5.0, e-mail or call’em for free, they’ll help ya out.
And, to upgrade your Bryce, DAZ will of course try and get you to buy some other stuff, but you do not have to. There are straight upgrade packages to buy, no problem. And, from statements DAZ has made, that I have read, it seems people WILL be able to do a 6.0 upgrade from any version of Bryce. But the final word on that will be DAZ’s.
Bottom line on Bryce 5.0 = Free.
That, and they have extended the dealine to get the FREE Bryce 5.0 until Sept. 13th.

Funny you mention that, Pilou;)!
Because, way back in time (it IS old, you are right in that) this interface (and a couple of others from the same mind) had been praised as the cream of the crop. It seems as if people minds do not change that much over the years: there is no praising of the interface, but folks use exactly that whenever they are brycing, posering, kpt-ing…
Would be interesting to know how Mr. Kruse would have made an actual interface.
I just got it today. Don’t have a clue how to use it yet, though.
