Carrara 5.1 Pro, how would you rate it to other renderers?

Before you limit yourself to something… download the demo from Maxon’s C4D:
http://www.maxon.net/pages/download/downloads_e.html
The demo version also has Hair enabled and I find the C4D Hair system the most awesome one from any other release. I never read the manual and get along just fine.
Cheers
Rainer

With no disrespect to Carrara, C4D is on a another level al together both in quality results and price. If I could afford C4D id drop alot of my apps in a hat right away.

Price is relative to life time wasted… I saved up and actually get somewhere now instead of having cg smoke coming out of my ear because of crashes and frustrating results… In that context… cheap mudbox anyone???
Rainer

…out of my ear …

You cleaned that up:lol:

( if I don’t mention this,will feel guilty.
The best renders I have ever made, have been
in Vue 6 Infinite with hdri. Would give anything to
duplicate them in Maya 2008)

It took me a while to save for both Zbrush and Modo. If I wanted C4D with render modual and hair id have to sell my kids, I dont think id get away with that though.

So how much you selling that Mudbox for?

not sure what patch you have but they released 6.1 last week or so and having not tested it really myself i understand from the forums the memory problem may be fixed.
here is the latest upgrade

list of fixes

CD4 would be top of my list, XSI is 2nd. Though I need to really test the demos to decide and then find the money
.

Yea 6.1, just wishing the next year away I guess. The memory problem has not been fixed. Carrara can be very touch n go with this issue. The memory allocation error I see too often unfortunatly.

Yeah a lot of time wasted, texturing, getting the right lighting only for the render to stop half way due to memory allocation errors
I grabbed Vue Esprit on a special offer and I find it so much better to use, the render results alone after just a tweak or 2 are 100 times better, I think C6 will find itself being left unused which is a pity. I was trying out the hair and its pretty cool.

Have you had success with the displacement maps in Vue 6 Infinite? I can not get them to map correctly. Have you tried this?

tez, sorry to use your thread and go slightly off subject.

CC01
Use Vue 6 as primarily a hdri renderer of Poser type scenes because of the qualityof the skin and other materials.
The times I have used displacement maps are when the characters are closeto something that I think should be stressed ( old wood, stone flooring etc.)
When doing hdri rendering, renders are long, when displacement maps are used the renders are longer.
I am enclosing a scene made for this post.

The material is default and a photograph I made of beach sand is used as the material for the ground and sphere with displacement mapping.
The same photograph is used in place of the hdri photo to generate the lighting.
The total poly count is 121. The rendering time was over 20 minutes.

On the average Poser scene, I give it most of the day.
Fortunately I can afford to do this because I have a couple of computers.
But displacement maps are expensive time wise and you should experimentwith the amount before the final render.
More times than not, have had to stop a render about two hours in, because of too much displacement.
Trial and error, basically

Hey no problems it was a old thread and got the answers I needed at the time. Vue sounds seems to takes way too long to render such a scene, I know poser was so bad I wondered why they even added animation.

Iv no loger use poser for this reason and went to Carrara which was so much faster with much better rendering quality. These days im mainly in Modo as the render speed in there is seconds for very intence displacment rendering.

Vue sounds seems to takes way too long to render such a scene.

You are quite correct, except for one unfortunate fact.
If you use their chrome studio hdri and manipulate the settings,
you can produce a render of a poser figure that looks human!!!
( V4 is an exception, am working on this.)

Have rendered in Carrara, Maya, Max, Cinema, Poser, you name it.
Friend used Renderman with my scene.
Have spent countless hours with the mental ray renderer in the new maya.
Bought a textbook about Mental Ray that I use for a coffee table:D
Have a large collection of hdri images.

If I could find something that could produce results equal to
or better than Vue 6 hdri renders, would buy it in a second.
Don’t even mind the length of the render.

As you might guess, this is a touchy subject bordering on obsession.
It has been ongoing for about two years.
Sorry, enough!!!

Im very interested in seing these renders, can you post some here please. If it takes longer but the results are the best the im all for that.

What is this chrome studio hdri that you spoke of?

chrome studio hdri that you spoke

Open Vue Go to Atmosphere>Atmosphere editor>environment mapping>
effects double click blank pane
Will attach sreen print, it is a group of hdri images that
vue gives you.
You must adjust settings for optimal results.
Dosch also sells sets of hdri images.
You can, of course substitute regular image, but the results
are not as good.

In Modo you can get exceptional results in very little time. Applying SSS, lights , HDR can be done in minuites. of course need to take longer to get the right results.

Hdri skinvue test rz.jpg

Can you post a render without the texture map, just wondered what the material is rendering like?

Here is a quick skin test in Modo. This took no longer than 3 min to setup I must add, results vary alot given time. One infinate light set very low and a HDR image for GI.

There is no particular texture map applied, its just basic colour tone scratched over from Zbrush. Model is my own.
