This is a fantastic work

@SolidSnakexxx: much appreciated :]
@hitch: thank you!

Is there an alternative to that mix8layer shader that isn’t plugin based? I’m using Maya 2014
Thanks man, and really amazing work!

BetaRayBill: Yes there are. One of them is to use layered texture node inside of maya, so you basically stack shaders on top of each other rather than texture files and send that to a surface shader as a pass through. Beware though, if you are using MR it tends to get buggy sometimes. Thanks man.

It was such a blast working on this, even though creating it was incredibly challenging.

The inspiration comes from the works of an amazing hairstylist, Linh Nguyen.

I used Shave and Haircut for the hair, ZBrush was used for sculpting and do an initial layout plus a few Fibermesh stuff. Except the character’s hair which is 80% mental ray everything else is rendered in Arnold.

This work has been also nominated for “Best Still” in the Animago AWARD 2013. It would be great if you can take a few seconds and vote for your favorite piece Here. (Edit: Poll is closed)

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I created this work for the cover art of 3D Artist magazine issue 61. Tigers are one of my most favorite animals, I almost always get captivated by their magnificence. The tutorial specifically focuses on creating fur in ZBrush.

I used Maya for scene setup, ZBrush for sculpting and Fibermesh, Shave and a Haircut, Mari, the amazing Arnold and Photoshop.

I just love how ZBrush is streamlining the process of content creation and making everything a lot less time-consuming and yet cost effective. In this case, the fur creation (even the whiskers) using Fibermesh was actually done in 2 stages. I call the first one a prototyping stage which aims to establish the desirable base look in the quickest way possible, and the second stage which is a lot more accurate in look but also a lot more sparse than the first one, this is the version that is sent to a third-party plugin such as Shave and a Haircut for further works. All in all, ZBrush played a major role in this work.
