2.5 D Painted Face
Zoomed document to tell where object was then drew it. Entered Edit mode, scaled rotated etc. until satisfied. Dropped from Edit mode and used the smudge brush with a couple different alphas, Paintbrush and a limited amount of erasing.

FiberMesh
Added some FiberMesh to the mix.

I really like that last image! The fibermesh makes it look almost like some sort of scratchboard art. Your images remind me of...bokeh? Is that the word? That abstract looking background pattern? Anyway, they're nice -- and very colorful!

Update
A bit more work on this guy, still lots of bits to work out. The Rider is one subtool @ ~14mil. points. The Hat, fox, saddle items are all separate subtools.

Salamander is so cute! He has personality. Love your scene -- great mood you created. A happy mood. Good job.

@ jan19 Thanks. Do you prefer one to the other?

    02-12-15
You're welcome. :-) I like the last render a little better, because I can see the salamander more clearly. And his expression is really cool -- like, "Oh, my. I've been spotted. Now what?" It doesn't look like he's scared though -- just...

New and improved
OK, I did some stuff, I hope you like the newer versions better. It's better in 3 folders. Place all 3 in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R7\ZStartup\Macros or Mac equivalent. Here's what they look like Newer files in later post. New versions very similar to what is shown.

Do you know is it possible to remove the "Dynamic" button from the Brush Size slider when pressing S button? This is the main reason why I'm still using R4. During the sculpting process I do everything very fast and with introduction of Dynamic brushes I...

@ truthhunter , Thank you for the feedback. @ Vir Norin , You posted that here why? Did you download anything? You now have to hold down shift, while clicking Dynamic, to turn it off.

ALTERNATIVE 4R7 UI (With Updated Files)
It's taken me 3 years to get the UI to this state. The "OOB experience" wasn't quite the ticket for me. I'm fairly satisfied now New users may find they're able to come to grips with the interface faster than with the 'stock UI'. I've managed 6 buttons for what I deemed were the handiest views. All files are in .txt format so you can see what you're installing, rather than a .zsc which takes a lot of blind faith. Added some stuff too; Some quick Canvas sizes and colors too Please follow the limited instructions Some things might not work as desired. Working on that Ensure you put the files in the right places, be safe, keep a back-up. You'll need Clean Tool from on the forums. Happy 4R7 ZBrushing Feel free to check back for updated stuff as I get to it.

4R7 is out :)
Modeling, texturing and rendering all in ZBrush, no post process(other than reduction). Lots of work leading up to these results from a BPR render done while testing. Salamander started as a ZSphere armature without the toes which were extruded after the skin was made. I love the ZModeler brush.
