Body done!
So my plan was to attack the bigger parts first and detail them on the fly, always measuring the model to get something compact but easy to be printed. Today I will be modeling the dome, after that I hope to get things ready to deliver on time the final entry. Images: As a hardcore fan of the original movies (Episodes IV, V and VI) I want to deliver something with accuracy so I took the time to subdivide the mesh enough to paint with the QMesh brush the areas I wanted. Then I Just Qmeshed it inwards, creasing and uncrease as needed. This way you will have a cleaner topology to work with. Final result. All was created using Zmodeler for the most part other pieces like the octagon port, the vents and the power coupling were made using both Zmodeler and Live Boolean. This is just a preview, the final entry will have thickness and the proper keys. See you soon.

Legs done!
Ok so legs done, I tried to balance the details because of the 3D print process. This guy has so many "straights and curves" but we need as many as we can, otherwise it will end up being kinda dull. gabo1991 thanks man, images incoming: I used every drop of Zmodeler that I could with some spicy Live Boolean added in the mix. I "Swiveled" those edges to make some nice greeblies. At a bigger scale details can be printed without problems. The foot has to be printed apart from the leg, this way all the leg would´t cause issues when the kiddo rides his droid. Feet will be attached to the legs using a pivot hinge system. I was thinking on some rollers for the feet, they permit free movement on every angle. I have a week off so I will be able to work on the body and the dome from now on. Regards.

    Shape of the leg is well shaped with Zmodeler Brush. I'd never expect it working so well. The Greeble looks very detailed in the perspective of aesthetics. Keep on the amazing job, man!

Just blocking this guy out
So I finally got some time to start and post something. I found a good reference in the book "Star Wars: The Blueprints", although this one is going to be an stylized version of the Q5 I will put on it enough accurate detail to make him shine. Yes indeed Aurick, I thought a lot on the mechanics, size and aspect of the final 3D printed model, I don't want to make something without covering first its construction and functionality, this way the next team will have less issues to solve. See you soon, starting sculpt phase now.

R2-Q5 Droid - Ivan Octavio
Hello everyone. This is my entry for the Magic Wheelchair Contest, let's gave some kiddo a taste of the Empire… R2-Q5 is a Galactic Empire R2 model droid (yes a sith R2 lol), you can see him on Episode VI Return of the Jedi. Specs: 1. Selfie sticks never gets old… Yes, a good old selfie stick will be used to take some fun pictures at the Con. The Kiddo can raise the selfie stick and open the top hatch to take pics at 360 degrees. 2. It's alive! The well-known R2 lights will flash and be flashy. Spinning dome: The "kiddroid" can spin Q5's head pushing the selfie stick to the left or to the right. 3. Let's make some noise! This one definitively has to have some speakers attached to it, a simple media player (like a mobile phone or a tablet) could be used to play Q5's sounds. Maybe there is an android app out there with R2-Q5 sounds, our kiddo will have plenty of fun making it beep. 4. I was here all the time! Frontal hatch opening mechanism: Once pulled inside will reveal who’s the master behind the living droid. This hatch will also have wide free spaces for the field of vision when is closed but if we want more clearance then this part could be made of black tinted acrylic. 5. It's already cool but let's make it cooler! There is going to be a lot of places for ventilation, the main ones are on front where we can put 2 fans to let in fresh air from the outside, kiddos need to be comfortable. As you can see I thought about this on terms of simplicity and manual mechanics, pieces and software already existent that can interact physically with the kiddo but there is always room for upgrades (electronic mechanism) if our friends at Thingergy Inc cast some of their magic on it. For example: Electronic dome spin, a little camera connected to a laptop instead a mobile phone, you name it. I saw what the guys at Massivit 3D can do with their huge 3D printer surely they will have no issues with thick hollow parts cause the head and body of this model will be hollow as a soda can. Any input from the development team will be appreciated, best of luck to every fellow contestant. Cheers!
