Illang: The Wolf Brigade (2018) - New Suit Concept
More exploration on new variations to the Jin Roh film's armor suit of the elite Kerberos Panzer Cops, which were a metropolitan anti-terror unit. I've been a big fan of the original Jin Roh anime, and it was a huge honor to get to work on this South Korean adaptation directed by Kim Jee-woon with Alliance Studios! Illang: The Wolf Brigade (2018) - Original Suit / New Suit Concepts
I got to create new variations, as well as, a mock up of the original 1999 Jin Roh film's armor suit of the elite Kerberos Panzer Cops, which were a metropolitan anti-terror unit. I've been a big fan of the original Jin Roh anime, and it was a huge honor to get to work on this South Korean adaptation directed by Kim Jee-woon with Alliance Studios! Special thanks to Eddie Yang & Steve Wang for bringing me on and leading the design team. The film was picked-up by Netflix! Can't wait to see it subtitled! 289185730 289186107 289155245 289543975

Objects of Reverence
Hi Everyone! rasmusW - Thank you!! I'll try to keep them coming! Here is my Sentinel concept! I had played around with creating multiples of these sentinels lining a corridor, but I really wanted to emphasize certain elements and strike a stronger mood, so I kept it singular. Definitely a Triforce visual language going, but a bit more sinister. New Sentry / Imperial Guard Creature Concept!
Hi Everyone, I started this thing recently and will be getting a final render out to create the main image. It's something along the lines of an Alien Sentry or Guard, partly inspired by the Sphinxes' Gate in The Never Ending Story in concept, not in appearance, so possibly may have multiples of them lining a opulent corridor. Thoughts?

Wreathed in Silence
Hi Everyone! Here's a Female Alien concept inspired by marine life creatures such as cuddlefish (Cuddlefish!) and the elaborate and feminine Cirque du Soleil costumes. Originally, it had started as an organic Egyption Sarcophagus design that grew into what it is now. Also, It was suppose to just be a bust, but to show her flowing cowls coming off her head, I had to crop much lower, then one thing lead to another and I found myself sculpting her feet! haha Let me know what you think! Thanks! 200421397 200421411 200422857 200421418

Creature Concept / IP Dev - Final Scene + Screenshots + Turntables!
Hi Everyone! Finally had a chance to wrap this creature concept up. Added some quick screen grabs of the pose and a few turntables as well, one of which, shows you the environment elements I created that only had detailing in the general area I chose for the final shot. A Second environment with some Fibermesh exploration that would have burgeoned my turn around time beyond what I what I felt appropriate, so I chose not to roll with it, even though it was looking pretty cool and framed the creature well. Let me know what you think! Thanks! Here is the Final Image: The Raw Render: Here are some screenshots of the posed model: Here are some turntables of the posed model and a couple of the environments I mentioned earlier: 190298027 190298026 This one's the one with some Fibermesh exploration: 190299551 Here are some of the symmetric posed model in color and early color exploration:

Sect of the Ophitæ
Hi Everyone! I'm really excited to share these creature concepts that I had a lot of fun putting together. Here is some of the info for the Title / Concept: Word Origin and History for ophidian adj. "pertaining to snakes," 1883, from Greek ophidion, diminutive of ophis "serpent" (see ophio- ). Hence, ophiolatry "serpent-worship" (1862), and the 2c. sect of the Ophitæ, who revered the serpent as the symbol of divine wisdom.

Alien WIP - Turntables
Hi Everyone! Really appreciate the response and feedback! Jakyll - Thanks! The Pulaski character was one of my favorite images, so I'm glad you dig it! LVXIFER - Thanks! RawSunlight - Thanks! A lot of cool work never made it in the film, though. WilsonReyes - Really appreciate it! The "Noxious Exhalations of the Putrescent" was a really fun one to sculpt. I agree, the film fell a bit short for all the concept art that was contributed to the production. Have a look at all the images that never made it in the film here. Here is something I've been trying to find the time to work on, but I have the color and detail on the head and neck where I want it, I just have to apply it to the rest of the body. I'll hopefully get some good progress and post more soon. Thanks for checking it out! {w] Sand Alien WIP Lighting Test from Mauricio Ruiz (Maury) on Vimeo. Cheeks! - Quick Sketch
Hi everyone! Thanks Grassetti! Thanks Piggy! I hear what you're saying about the lack of depth to the eye area. I may have chosen to keep that area a bit subtle to balance out the high degree of details that draw your eyes into the mouth and exposed olfactory system or nasal cavity, but maybe since it drew your attention, I'll play with how much I can push it while maintaining that fleshy smooth feel that I'm aiming for. I appreciate the comment! So, before I finish the other more serious creature, I wanted to make something a bit more playful for a change. I can't help but see the influence by Majin Boo from Dragon Ball Z, but I was aiming for a childlike expression... I think those funnels on his head may have taken over the edge, but oh well... I'm having fun with it! (I may add some color to make it pop)

excellent concept and looking forward to see it finish~ the whole model is actually pretty good already, but I do wish you would spend some time on the eyes area of the creature... give it a little bit more depth on the brow area would be a nice start.

Alien Bust
Had a little time to do this quick Alien bust. Just a quick BPR render with no BPR Filters. I've always preferred black and white creature images, as they always hit a more serious feel, so I decided to color this entirely in black and white except for the rim light of course..

  • I really like the manta creature. The red is a bit intense, but his design is very serene. Diggin it.

Manta WIP
I've had this creature in my head ever since I made my previous aquatic creature. This would fall in the line of a mammalian manta ray creature. Definitely one of many aquatic life forms I envision in as prey for my larger aquatic predator previously posted. Jonboywalton82 - Yea, there is always some speculation when it comes to how anatomy would actually function, but as long as it's cool and practical enough to sell it as plausible, then I'm in the clear. Again, it's something of a feat to take this to animation or even more difficult, practical effects, that the real plausibility comes into question as functioning mechanics. You can never be to sure until you've built it for real, haha.. KC-Production - Thanks Kenny! I'm glad you're inspired, as I'm always excited for creature stuff. I put off the coloring of the other creature to spice up my enthusiasm by starting something new, even though part of it was borrowed from the original aquatic creature. The paint job will come soon. EricShawn - Thank you! I've gotten enough of a reaction from my aquatic creature, so I decided to flush out some more life forms along that direction. RED!! ... and for all those small monitors out there

Finally got the mouth open. I was playing with an idea of having a squid/octopus beak in the throat area, but after sculpting it and placing it in, it just was not coming across right, so I'll save the beak for another creature. It's better without it. Now that the mouth is close to being done, I'm going to touch it up a little then jump on to coloring it. I'm aiming for a somewhat reserved color palette like I originally made it. Somewhere around a shark coloration, dark on top, light on bottom with the details playing out in the transition. Mahlikus The Black - Thank you! rodion vlasov - Thank you sir! I appreciate the comments and am always open to hear your critiques.

  • Jonboywalton82
    05-03-12
Hey Maury, nice work here. At first I wasn't sure about the anatomy being correct with regards to the flow of the mouths/jaws but looking at it some more I feel you've pretty much nailed it, I'm no expert on anatomy by any means but I feel this is coming...

Aquatic Creature Revised - WIP Continued...
I jumped back on this aquatic creature and flushed out the more details, specifically the tentacle details. I am working on the head and interior of the mouth at the moment and will post those images soon. SammehSAMURAI - Thank you for your enthusiasm! It reminds me to constantly push my skills further.
