Thats great to know. I think I would rather have x64 than Vista.
Greetings,
So far I have done all my homework and I am putting a new system together with and Intel Duo Core 2( E6300), 4GB RAM, 256Mb ASUS video card, Windows XP 64.
I was relieved to find out that ZBrush 3 will run under XP 64. I was intially going with Windows Vista Ultimate 64, but backed down on the idea two weeks into building my system. So far according to my research all the older software I own will run under XP 64 and I will be able to run ZBrush 3, which was a high priority along with my antivirus and firewall subscription software. I’m really looking forward to do some modeling with 4GB RAM:)
I just put together this system:
Athlon 64 X2 2.6ghz(socket AM2 1meg cache)dual core optimizer installed aswell
ASUS M2N-E motherboard(windows LIVE! capability,Vista ready)
4gigs DDR2 800 ram
Radeon HD2900 512 meg graphics card(DX 10 card)
HD Soundmax DTS soundcard
4 10,000rpm SATA 3 harddrives(non raid config)
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
So far Zbrush3 runs great… the problem I mentioned earlier was due to Vistas stupid security stuff preventing me from registering the program…
Hello , zbrush3 is running great at my system with full memory and 64bit.
My System is:
QX6700 Intel Extreme with Asus Striker Extreme and 8GB RAM G.Skill
XFX 7900GTX2 SLI 1GB RAM / Tagan 990 WAtt and 5x 250GB Seagate SATA
on Vista 64bit
how is it working for you so far?
any hiccupps?
things I should know a bout before i upgrade my system?
how much of a difference in perormance do you see?
is it worth it?
i have this as my specs:
motherboard: Asus A8N sli deluxe
proccessor: AMD 64 bit dual opteron
2000mhz front side bus.
2 gigs of RAM
running on windows XP 32 bit
do you think I will benefit form upgrading to Vista Ultimate?
thanks Guys.
for your system i can not recommend Vista Ultimate. Ultimate need 1GB !! You have only 1 GB for yor 3d Software. Vista is only good with min. 4GB RAM !!
Your 3d Software can work with the full system ram and 64bit but you lost 1GB for Vista . And you need extra Driver for all your Hardware ! Not for all manufactur can get this driver.
My 3d software works very stable and fast.
Your spec is pretty much the exact configuration of my system (apart from the MB). I’m using XP64, which works really well with all the 3D software I use. Personally I’d stay away from Vista for at least the next 12 months and probably forever if Microsoft don’t get their act together. I agree you’ll need 4G RAM but on XP64 2Gig works very well and 1G just for the operating system seems is I think a bit like overkill but probably something we’ll all have to come to terms with, one day. There seem to be a lot of issues with drivers for Vista so if you’re feeling lucky, dive in.
wow thanks alot guys for all your advice.
there is alot to think about there.
so if i have windowsXP32 does that mean I have to buy a whole new 64 bit version?
and also ive been talking to some folks and it seems like everyone has mixed issues with Vista.
it works great for some but not for others.
sigh…
oh well.
i think if i have to buy a whole new windows XP 64, i will just rather buy VIsta.
i will let you guys know how everything goes tonight.
i will be making the upgrade to either or tonight.
thanks once again fellas!
Vista is cheaper if you buy the 32bit upgrade(Home or Home Premium),and then order the 64bit version from Microsoft, all Vista OS except Ultimate are the 32bit version only…
they give you a card with the upgrade purchase that will give you a link to where you can order the 64bit version of the OS you just bought …it was only $14 and they will send it to you and you just use the same code as the 32bit one you bought…also it will be in DVD only and its the full version NOT an upgrade.
Hope you understand what im talking about…
Works ok on my WinXP64, I wont say it’s perfect, but there could be a million things causing little bugs for Zbrush 3.
Only time will tell.
I’m having problems trying to install in Vista64 Home Premium too.
It gives me a licensing error, then opens up my web browser to a support page that doesn’t even list Zbrush 3 as option for choosable versions.
I just put together my new system on Monday. It’s pretty beefy, but under Vista64 it’s really slow. I’m seriously considering moving back to XP until the drivers mature a little.
Greetings,
When I built my computer for my 49th birthday I decided that it would be a turning point for me so I gave away my old Dell desktop with XP to my nephew. Since then, I have had my hiccups with Windows Vista and have had to ask for a new license key for ZBrush 3 on several occasions. The Pixologic team continue to be responsive and honor requests for a new license key to registered users. Although there are still some bugs to be ironed out with ZBrush 3 there has yet to be any other software that I have enjoyed more from a creative standpoint.
Do you have a raid? There’s an ongoing problem with systems that are raided. It doesn’t retain the license after it’s been activated. Maybe you’re experiencing this very problem. They told me a little more than a month ago that they would have a fix for this in about a week’s time. I get the feeling they’re waiting to include that fix in a larger update because I’ve heard nothing since. Like you said, support has been responsive up to date but this whole experience does leave me concerned about Pixologics responsiveness in general. Seems to me that licensing issues with paying customers is a more immediate issue than some of the sculpting bugs that have been reported. Not to mention that I will have to stumble across the fact that a new build has been released because they have no plans to offer any real means of notification. At least that’s what I was told by support. Frustrating indeed.

I am running zb3 with vista x64, 4gb of ram. The one thing that disturbs me is the fact that ZB is showing as an x32 process.
Greetings,
When I initially purchased ZBrush on a credit card for $489 I felt that I was getting an exceptional and very creative tool that stood out from the rest of the more mainline commercial packages costing more that $3000. The free upgrades and the sheer variation of artistic pieces posted here on ZBrushCentral still leave me in awe and continue to draw out my artistic curiosity even at 49 years of age.
In regards to Windows XP 64 bit I went ahead and purchased Windows Ultimate Vista 64 bit after having problems obtaining Windows XP 64 bit. I have not had enough critical problems with the recent ZBrush 3 to dissuade my artistic curiosity and I am overall satisfied with the responsive support that I have been given. Over all I feel that I am very blessed to have the opportunity to work with this unique creative software and be part of a artistic community that is resilient and populated with some wonderful digital artists:)
Ok, here is some info for you guys on 3D Workstations / Systems.
32 bit XP is a good choice if you don’t have access to anything 64-bit, but it will not allocate more than 3GB of RAM (most probably) to any application.
64 bit XP is perfect, since it runs using all 4GB of RAM (if you have it) perfectly, and you may set up mem options in ZBrush to utilize like 3GB of these. Also, for you Maya 8 - 8.5 and 3DS Max 9 fans - 64-bit will boost these apps’ performance around double, most probably, if you have a good quality CPU. Don’t forget that you’ll need 64-bit versions of these apps, 64-bit upgrades, and SPs as well.
If you are trying to use more than 4GB of RAM on any (including 64 bit) version of XP, you are stuck with only 4GB, nothing better, and PAE will not really improve performance for those of you who know how to manage boot.ini.
My stance on vista is such: yes, it does allow up to 8GB in 64 bit versions, like Ultimate and such. However, even if ZBrush does work on Vista ok, Vista is and will be full of holes and bugs for the next 5-6 months at least, and you won’t be able to run a lot of other stuff on it unless you are willing to waste a lot of nerves.
As far as graphic cards, I am currently using NVIDA Geforce 7800, 256 mb video memory, PCI-express, but this is not my best recomendation if you have a good budget. The up-front best chice for ZBrush users and all other 3D artists and developers I’d say is Geforce Quadro 4600. Due to high price, this might not be within your wallet volume, but you can try other Quadros. There is a nice comparison chart on the NVIDIA.com website. Something yet cheaper would be the higher-end GeForce 8000 series and higher-end Radeons with 512 mb and PCI express. Notice, specifically PCI express! AGP will be around 4-8 times slower. Hope this helped.
Maybe this is obvious, but I’d better ask before I dive in.
Will my 32 bit apps (PhotoShop, Painter, etc.) run ok under Win XP64?
I understand to milk the most out of the app that a 64 bit version would be preferable, but I just want to know if I can use them as is.
thanks!
Mine run ok ive gor Photoshop CS3,Paintshop Pro XI,3Ds Max 8,Maya 8 and many others, they all seem to run fine on my 64bit Vista, they should run fine on XP64bit aswell…
Im running a quad-core 64bit with 6gigs of ram, Z-Brush 3.1 works, but when i open the Task Manager and check the Processes, it shows Z-Brush 3.1 running in 32 bit mode (*32) After reading through here someone mentioned the main app runs in 32 bit mode, so I assume this is just the way it is, let me know if thats not the case, is anyone else seeing this or not?
thanks!:b2: :b4: :b2: :b2: :b4:
Zbrush is only a 32 bit APP.
not 64 bit.
thats why it shows up as 32 bit.
it can read 4 gigs of RAM. but its stilla 32 bit APP
