Twitch's March to Greatness

I do have that book, but I haven’t gotten far, I really should pick it up again. I’m not sure I understand the third line, are you saying the perspective is still not looking right? I have perspective on in that picture, is there a way to manually change Zbrush’s camera? Excuse me if I’m mistaken in my understanding.

no no Twitchmonkey I can see the perspective is on

What I mean’t was I just studied this problem of perspective in ZB to see what the ideal focal lenght should be. Turns out the default one is fine

Sorry I didn’t mean to complicate things. I was just explaining what I did when I forgot to turn on the perspective. I just learnt about focal lengths.

I am jibbering. Just turn on the perspective as you already have and things will be great  <— bit to tired today, not making sense.

Don’t worry about it, I’m real good at going off on confusing tangents.

I’ve done some more work on fishman. I’m not really loving the sculpt, I felt like he needed some fine details, but I didn’t have a concrete idea of what sort of details those would be, so I just made a bunch of 3d layers with various alphas and intensities. If I happen to get any crits that I feel can really save the sculpt, I may continue, but otherwise, I’ll probably just move on.

Haha. that is lookin really cool.

Thanks. I’ve been considering adding some large stripes or something, something to make his face a bit less boring, but he does have some charm, I suppose.

I actually tried to make a woman without huge boils or freakish scowl lines. This stuff is hard.

An improvement?

Fixed some stuff up, found a good way to make the eyebrows, and rendered it at higher quality.

bottom lip is sticking out way too far. put the upper lip as far out as the lower, and vice versa.

You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve gotten this critique from you, D. What if that’s how I like lips to look, huh?! Maybe think about that for once! What I want!

Nah, I’ll give it a go. Thanks.

Who’s that? In the profile they both come out to pretty much the same level now. If anything the top lip comes out a little more.

If you post front and side ortho views, I’ll do a sketchover for you.

Sure, that would be great.

Hey there Twitchmonkey! I hope you’re doing well!

Firstly, Good job, You’re improving, and u have a good attitude about this stuff!

The last model is actually not bad so don’t take this advice as anything harsh, I just want you to achieve your ‘march to greatness’ also =)

My advice would be to smooth everything out a bit and not be afraid to do major reworking / reshaping especially with the smooth and move brush at lower levels where you should focus solely on shape and silhouette and proportion like any1 wud tell u.

Try to match it to a reference you’re basing it on (shape + silhouette / outlines of the model) with close cross-examining and observation. If you’re not basing it on reference I suggest u do for your earlier projects where you’re still learning.

Thing is try not to be boggled ever with details or the different smaller facial muscles etc until u get the shape and silhouette and proportions right, and be ruthless about it and not afraid of changing what you’ve done dramatically (I learned it the hard way also).

From the side view the face is protruding out far too much I think. The eyes are a little too far apart or placed too far to the sides of the face also. There are more issues but I will leave it to the anatomy experts =)

Not bad though! And Keep marching!:+1:

listen to the man!

Thanks for all the help guys, I’ll rework those details and see if I can’t make it look a little more refined.

You’ve got a good eye, Dustin, I tried to rework my design to match the silhouette you suggested and I really think the sculpt benefited from the changes. Here is a comparison, the old version is on the left and the new one is on the right.

I’m not certain I’ve made all of the changes you suggested, so if there is anything I missed, I certainly wouldn’t mind having it pointed out to me.

Good progress, Twitchmonkey! What I would suggest is that you practice sculpting the planes of the face–that way you get a better grasp of the form.

Just google it for plenty of pics. This guy’s site has really impressive stuff too: http://philippefaraut.com/supplies.html

I usually sculpt with a greater amount of planarity to begin with and smooth things as I deem necessary. If you think I should add more back though. I certainly have a go at it. Thanks for the comments.

Hey Good Progress TwitchMonkey!
And thanks for that link Marsyas, found some interesting stuff there!
