time for displacement maps

I am having an issue it says my displacement map is going to take 1:77:00 to generate my displacement map, i am using the following settings
adaptive+smoothUvs,
my model consists of 7 levels of subdivision base model is not very high about 400 polys
also do i need to check smooth uvs everytime i subdivide and use smooth uvs on the displacement menu as well?
one more thing when creating my disp maps does it use both proc or just one??

I was haveing the same issue…I’m not sure if this is right but try this after detail modeling:
:large_orange_diamond: goto lowest sub level (ex: 1:6)
:large_orange_diamond: Create Cage
:large_orange_diamond: Delete higher levels
:large_orange_diamond: create your disp map with these settings
DPSubPix 4
DPRes 2048

I hope someone interviens with corrections if i’m WAY wrong.

sadicus, if you delete your higher levels then there will be nothing for ZBrush to compare to for the purpose of creating a displacement map.

If you are having difficulties, please post images of the low and high resolution meshes, as well as a detailed explanation of the steps that you are following. This will allow us and other ZBC members to better understand the question and possibly spot workflow improvements.

Also, be sure to specify how many polygons the high resolution version is, and what your system specs are.

ok here`s what ya asked for

The mesh seems to be very simple and should not take a long time to generate the displacement map. What are the settings that you’re using in the Displacement menu?

Also, could you send me the low resolution version of your file so that I can test it on my system? [email protected]

done deal i sent ya the file, i am using adaptive with a size of 1536

I have tested the model and the problem seems to lie in your map dimensions. ZBrush is optimized for powers of 2: 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048, or 4096x4096. When I created the map at these resolutions, there was no problem. When I created it at your resolution (which is a really strange one!) I was able to duplicate the error.

If you need that size rather than one of the preferred sizes, I recommend creating the map and then resizing it to what you need.

Also, using the Adaptive setting, the map generated in about 10-15 seconds.

aurick i tried setting my disp map to 2048 didn`t fix the issue, I am wondering how many times did u subdivide the model?? cause maybe thats whats causeing my problem since I am at level 7

I think I went to level 5. What are your system specs? Specifically, how much RAM do you have?

Also, please provide the exact steps that you are following from the time that you complete the high resolution modeling to the time you get the crash.

ok i have 2 gigs of ram ive subdivided 7 times, set up a disp at 2048 and its not that it crashes it says 177 mins left to create disp

Is that with Adaptive active? Or is it with the displacement sub-pix slider at a high value?

adaptive

i would recommend getting rid of those overlapping polygons. ive had bad times with them.

try calculating that map from level 2 and see what happens.

Thanks for the tips Aurick.
I think i figured out what i was doing wrong, and posted some info in this thread:
displacement in Maya

I was getting the long render time when using:displacement sub-pix slider at a high value 4. (as sugested in the Manual)
The Hand Tutorial is the reason i was deleting the Higher levels before creating the 2nd Displacement Map.

So when it it appropriate to use Adaptive on, or displacement sub-pix…?

The only way i have been able to generate a map, without waiting 177+ min is using Adaptive=on.

And In Maya, I am getting Displacement but not with any detail.
Thanks!
