I’d have to say he’s pretty much on point with the Alex Ross Superman.

oh! i never saw this superman before sorry it looks just like him great work
Very cool man (as usual)
The only thing I see (right away) is the little flock of hair that hangs down (Elvis style) seems like it’s growing out of his forhead, instead of his scalp and hanging down.
Other then that it looks great dude!
Freakin’ unbelievable Kris, I am at a loss for words here. This is honestly my favorite work of yours thus far. Love the proportions, and especially his expression. This is inspiration in its purest form
LOD… Amazing work…
My post 'll not be original : Great work (as usuall) !!!
Great stuff, no problem !
If I wanted to do some crits, it would concern the area surrounding the eyes ; It makes them a bit too much darkly, and thus gives him a hangry / sick look, reminding me of the Reeves Sup’ in the third movie, when he’s poisoned with the kriptonite. The lights are a bit dark, too, the Ross paintings are much bright, I think !
Good luck with the whole body, it will be a pleasure to see your achieved project !
Bye !
Wonderful on all counts
Ater saving the world who wouldn’t look a tad jaded?
I like the fact that you’ve put some humanity back into the character - it makes for an interesting alternative to the usual approach to the character.
Superb as always.
Hey! Wow! 4 pages of replies!
Firstly, let me just thank you everybody for being so nice with this “old man” A true honor for me to read such nice words from so many talented and inspiring artists like you guys (you know who you are!
)
I really appreciate all the comments I read. Will take me a while to answer everybody so I’ll try to clarify some questions I remember.
First of all, I just want to make it clear that this work is INSPIRED BY Alex Ross, not BASED ON Alex’s Superman. I mean, I love his style but I’m trying to create my own version of Superman. This way I can have some space for creation instead of just make a translation from his 2D work to 3D. So, yeah, this is just INSPIRED by his work but this is my work
About the body model, yeah, I was so ashamed I had nothing new to post here together with my comment that I decided to take the last 3 days to model it. This is just a PRELIMINARY model and everything is temporary. I’ll keep working on it for the next days if I have the time. I’m not quite happy with some regions but this kind of stuff have to be done with some free time, probably after some days without to look at him
For now, I just think his muscles have too much definition, almost like he was naked. I’ll fix that with time.
About how to model the eyelids to follow the eyeball shape, I just do it in Maya making the eyeball object “live” than snapping the points till I get it in place. Another way is:
So, here’s the very PRELIMINARY model. Still a lot of adjustments to do. No SSS shader on his face, only a plain phong shader with the color plugged, just for render test:
Here I was playing around with the threshold filter in PS just to check the volumes:

nice! IV been to busy to finish mine i started it back in march i like whjat your doing.
Kris: Excellent body! I think the definition is fine, in that the suit has always been form fitting and I always believed it to be thin, so “excess definition” fits right in.
As for the “based on” “inspired by” comments, I know that if you wanted to do a “based on” work, it would have come out exactly like Ross… Your interperatation is awe inspiring for me because your interperatation gives him character not normally seen in traditional comic media.
I might not have mentioned it before, but your “classical painting” you made years ago was the image that made me try Z-Brush. It’s still one of my favorite pieces of CG work. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge you’ve taught me for these past couple years…
You ROCK, My Brother…
Dickie
Oh yeah, and if you end up visiting Santa Maria again, PM me, as I’d love to get together and talk shop…
Great Work Kris ,
I was just about to start modelling my own superman based on Brandon Routh. Just have a quick questions for you, for the colour map do you just use a generic map that you fit in Zbrush or do you paint from scratch in photoshop?
The reason I ask is that I have some high detailed pics that I fit onto the model in zbrush then export and touch up in photoshop and was just wondering if your workflow is the same.
Also just a suggestion, If you could make a tutorial on your workflow you could make some serious money, I would be more than happy to pay for any tutes you bring out. Your work is always top notch and you are a master of Zbrush.
Cheers
Love this piece!
Since everyone said all the compliments I would’ve said,… I’ll tell you this.
At age 12 I wouldn’t leave my house if my hair didn’t have that “S” curl coming down the center. I should add, my sick need to tie a towel around my neck and run really really fast so I could see the towel flying in the wind.
I broke alot things around the house and I got alot of wippins.
I stop believing I was SUPERMAN when I realize,…If I were really him,… I wouldn’t of felt those WIPPINS.
Thank you for taken me back to those memories.
Thank you for sharing your art with the Zworld.

What can I say… You did it again!!!
A beautiful character, superbly modeled and painted.
Kris, you’re a true inspiration to us all, beginners and veterans alike.
You continue to set new standards for even season Zbrushers to aspire to.
Cheers,
~Mr. M
ah… ze bodzy… great!
Nice to see him in costume! Ofcourse, the big ‘S’ is still missing, but if you can do THIS, you can do that too.
One question: his boots have wrinkles now, but isn’t it with boots that they wrinkle like that only when leaning forward or backward? Offcourse, I don’t have superboots so I can’t know. Maybe you had a reason to do it?
WOW!! love your work man
Antropus… thanks very much for your help and your time, is very apreciate.
I love this model!
only thing : he seems to be a bit older than Ross’s Superman because of muscles being a bit too relaxed in his throat area.
however its stunning work he reminds alot Ross drawings and i can say for sure you was very well ispired by him and put your cool style onto the model.
great work.
I stared at it so long I’m sure I just saw one of his knees blink?
Fantastic.
