Steven Chen - Modeling Reel 2006

wow, your “beast” model is one of the best models, i’ve seen in my entiere life. characterdesign is amazing.:+1::wink:

Hey Excellent reel, I remember seeing that dog model on cgtalk forever ago and thought you were a professional sculptor getting into cg, I had no idea you were a student. Top Notch modeling even for VFS, good luck in the future. hopefully you still have some time to post personal projects up here even when your putting in 16+ hours at weta.

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with your work! It is amazing stuff you are producing.

Make sure you keep coming back to the community after you get your job because I think everyone could learn a thing or two or ten from you!

Great job and good luck (even thought I don’t think you’ll need any luck.)

Peace,

NickZ.

m8 thats just amazing
now you will choose which company to go to…not the other way around
best of luck… well you dont really need it, your skills is enough to takes you any where

you know what I think already Steve, you are a very very talented artist!
I admire your ability in both traditional and digital.
Cant wait to hear where you will end up working at.

1 star becouse the music ends too fast :stuck_out_tongue:
anyway, i love it

I thought the real was out of this world, it would be nice if the they were all colorized, and presented in the same fashion as the first model. but wow, I must say I am way jealous, and I hate you, and I love you, and am happy for you, yes all those things, but ulitimately, I am happy for you, it is great to see someone aspire to great hights, and produce “things” that inturn inspire me, and make me want to reach for the next level. Good luck, I am sure you’ll have a fine career in the industry.

That was some killer stuff man…The monster looked seriously freaky and I loved the quadruped, it has a really intense feel to it. The giant demon sea otter on steroids was awesome, great form and execution man. Definite 5 star material! And like everyone else has said, I’m sure you’ll have no problems finding work. Congrats on the great reel and good luck to ya in the future

thanks alot for the nice words guys

i will definately keep on posting on this forum, i visit this site at least 3 times a day, with artists like MM, Antropus, Metamesh…etc this is like a treasure box for cg artists around the world!!

cheers

steve

Loved the demo reel, you have inspired me

I loved your work. I just have two questions. How did you get your figures to spin? Did you do it in ZBrush or another appliction?

can you share your rendering technique? I can never get my renders that crisp with a ZB displacement map…whats your secret?

-Billy

LD i rendered the models out in XSI

fnote i didnt use the displacement map on any of these models, what i did is model my polly in XSI and use zbrush to create bump map

hope these answers help

steve

steven you did it again. … hope you find a job!

The perfect modeling reel…

cool choice with the music too…it enhances the whole thing…
…makes you feel like all these creatures come from that same creepy…alternative universe…

Also interesting to see the different approaches to ZBrush as a modeling tool.
Here, the already highquality/highdetail model in XSI and only use ZBrush as a texturing tool (bump)…compared to, for example Metamesh’s last pose with that hilariously lowpoly boxmodel in max…that he turned into an amazing highquality/highdetail sculpture in ZBrush…

hotdamn …all this **** makes you wanna model 24/7…
…sorry gotta go to the laundry now…anybody can spare me a 20 pence piece:(

very nice stuff man… great…
a question for everybody…
i think it should be possible to get the same result of the we got here using much less dense mesh… and usicng dispmaps+ normspace bump to get the result… what you think it’s the better way to approach a producion rendering oriented model?

  1. dense mesh + bump map
  2. lores cage mesh dispmap+ norm map
    ???
obviously the lores model is supposed to be correctly modeled and strictly edge looping
    thank u
    and compliments to the artist…

Steven,

Really nice work. Good luck on your search. I’m sure you won’t have any problems. Anyway, I really liked the rendered wireframe look. I know this is a zbrush forum but let me post this question to all Maya/Zbrush users. Can that effect be done in Maya? or will I need some sort of plug-in to do so. Thanks.

I think the fastest way top do it is to render out the uv set from maya and then apply it as a texture…

3d55steven, really great work, no matter what apps used. Everyone has a particular work flow, depending on info they have been provided. As long as you can adapt to the needs of a work/pipeline environment you will be employable.

For the fellas listed below, this probably isn’t the correct thread for this, so I’ll keep it short.

sephirothsinic, yes to both your posts.

Aseesl8er, yes.

hey steve,

Just had to post my congrats here on my fave site zcentral. Watched your reel again at home, and it definitely gave me some much needed inspiration.
good luck
