Spectacular Entry - Leviathan

brilliant picture, but shouldnt the fishermen be soaked/sweaty and not dry as you have them?

Pilou

GREAT. 5stars!!!

Dark_Fire, Craig Ward: Thanks guys J I’m very happy that you liked the work.

Jantim: “looks like a wimmer to me”. Hehe if only you’re one of the judges :D. Yep the whale is detailed and textured in zb, rendered in max with displacement maps. The only thing without any modeling in zb is the boat, and almost all things were textured in zb. Photoshop was used for compositing and addind atmosphere and tiny specs of water, the bigger blobs of splashes were made in zb too. Cos this work was done in a rush (some stuff look sorta crap upclose J), I’m cleaning up some models and I’ll post some more images and wip stuff later on. You can still take a look at my challenge thread [http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=273735](http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=273735) for now. Pixelsoul: Thanks man, the water splashes is a mixture of 3d and 2d. The bigger bloby splashes (side of boat and around the bottom of the whale) are made in zb using similar techniques to Meats Miers’ create diffence trick. The very fine misty and streaky splashes are 2d painted and composited photos I took of a fountain. I’ll post some detailed explanation on the making of the water soon.

MattHHH: Thanks dude:D um I looked on dictionary.com and it came up with:

  1. Something unusually large of its kind, especially a ship.
  2. A very large animal, especially a whale.
  3. A monstrous sea creature mentioned in the Bible.
I guess the name works ok J

Pooop: thanks man, yer that’s true, I’ll give that a try, cos it was sucha rush I think I’ll find time to refine the picture to submit for expose and give that a shot, thanks for the suggestion.

Spaceboy412: Thanks J. Nice observation, Yer I’ve been careful with the whale anatomy, I borrowed a few books and whale and searched web for images so it should be pretty close to correct. I was surprised when I saw that sperm whales actually have no upper teeth (that’s why it tips backwards to bite) and it actually have very wrinkly skin. The eye I did try give it more character so I changed it a little, they are usually much smaller, but something with the displacement made it funny, I might fix that up when I find time. But it seemed to work fine to get my entry in on time. Thanks for the suggestions. TheXbucket: Thanks, I appreciate itJ Sebcesoir: Thank you, yep I’ll post some wip stuff soon Zmith[21]: thanks, yer the eyes bolged off witht eh displacement going funny J I’ll find time to fix that sometime saltapidras: I don’t quite understand your language but I guess it’s good, thanks J Abyssis, Fouad.B, artstudio3: thanks dude Slocik: yep true, someone suggested before, I’ll find time to add that in J thanks Realityengine: yep sure, I’ll put them up soon Hyper1: thais is actually my first go at zb J although I did some in between at work so I had some practice there. Yer I’ll prepare some images post some wip and explainations soon, glad you like it Djampa: thanks man J Eyesonly: agree, traditional whale hunting is brave but yer true whale killing is no good Maggot: um they shouldn’t ve fully wet but I think they can do a bit more wetter, thanks for suggestion. Freachy Pilou: yer a lot of people metioned that, I didn’t know the story until I made the concept and people tell me it’s moby dick J Delandvogt: 5stars, wow thanks

I think it’s great. I also think it’s one of the few entries that manged to capture the theme. Good show.

I just don’t have enough words to describe how amazing this work is. After looking through your cgsociety thread, seeing your work in progress, I’m even more blown away. Stunning, stunning work. You deserve all the kudos you get.

Kircho, billrobertson42, Phil Connors, Strannik and Sav: thank you, i’m glad you liked it, thanks for visiting.

i haven’t had time yet to sort out my wip stuff, but here’s an render of the original zb whale model (the one in the composite was a displacement version and went funny in the eyes:p) and some close ups of the water so you can see what’s 3d and what’s not, it’s more obvious up close.

keep it simple.
KNOCKED ME ON MY ASS!!!:+1: :+1:
If you don’t do well, can’t wait to see the others.

I’m a huge fan of Melville’s classic, I know this isnt necessarily that, but it does send shivers down the spine, reminding me of the white whale… I think this is one of the more original entries, and have to say its nice to see something that isnt just the, “2000 years from now on a distant planet idea” hehe.

Greate work, I like this idea !
