[Solved] "Abnormal Termination" when clicking Dynamesh?

Hey,

I’m trying to dynamesh an object I brought in from Zbrush. (I brought it in as an .OBJ, with the “Zbrush” preset selected.)

As soon as I hit “Dynamesh,” an error message pops up. The window title is “ABNORMAL TERMINATION” and its message tells me where I can find a recovered file. When I click “OK” the program closes.

I’ve run a meshintegrity check and fixed all the errors, and yet I still get this. I’ve also played with different export options within Max. I’ve googled this and searched the forum, and while people get “Abnormal Termination” for lots of things, I haven’t seen anything about dynamesh specifically.

I am using ZR7 P3.

Thanks.

Here’s what I did to get it to work.

  1. Load Tool

  2. Run Tool> Geometry> Modify Topology> Close Holes on the main subtool.

  3. Then Geometry> Mesh Integrity> Fix Mesh

Dynamesh as desired.

Thanks so much!

I suppose I can derive a rule of thumb from this - hidden holes might cause dynamesh to fail. Will always do it in the future, thanks again.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with having a hole. Dynamesh will normally just close it. But you had some wonky distorted geometry on the base, and dynamesh may have been trying to close the holes in a way that was problematic. Closing the holes first then fixing the resulting bad geometry before dynameshing did the trick in this case.
