Questions and Troubleshooting for ZAppLink

i have a powerbook g4 and a g5 and it does not work in any of the machines
if i run the version 1 of the plug in it gives me an error, and if i use the second release zbrush crashes
i have cs2 but i tryed even with painter 9 cs1 and still does not work

hopefully someone can give me a solution

I have a g4 ibook and a g5 desktop and cs2 and it doesn’t give me any trouble. I do recall something right when I installed it, but it was because I had not configured it correctly (we are talking several months ago and I have a terrible memory). ZApp does work. My advice would be for you to look into the earlier versions of this thread and you will probably find your solution. Several people have had this problem and fixed it. I know because I completely failed to help them - felt bad - and then someone else discovered a useful solution! :o

Hi there,

I’m trying to use ZApplink…I can send my stuff to Photoshop…but If I go back to Z-brush, the ZApp just give me the “return to external Editor” and an"ok" button. If I press ok…nothing happens :o Whaaat the … !!!

I would appreciate every help…cuz I’m trying to get this work for weeks

V!TO

I"m running OS 10.4.7 on a G4 1.2 GHz (mirror door) and Zbrush 2.03

On my first run, Zbrush crashed when I hit OK to activate ZAPPlink. I read the threads, and although I DID NOT reinstall Zbrush, I did the following:

Renamed the Applications folder to all Caps (had to change permissions to do it- changed the owner of the folder to my account), moved Zbrush out of a nested folder within Applications to directly in Applications folder.

and it worked! since then I’ve been trying to get it not to work, but haven’t had any success- I’ve renamed Applications back to lower case, changed owner of Applications folder back to system, moved Zbrush into a nested folder within Applications, pretty much undid everything that I changed in the first place to get it to work…

It still works, not only that, I changed the target application to Photoshop (I had been linking it to Painter) and it worked on the first shot.

I hope this is of some use to someone…

If there are any spaces in any folder or application names (i.e. my apps/photoshop cs2/) the PSD application path is converted to %20 within the ZAppExternalEditorPath.TXT file, in place of the spaces… I’m not a programmer, but ZAppLink may see these as illegal characters?

When I remove all spaces ZAppLink works great, but other applications fail like Acrobat and distiller so far. Any way to error trap ZAppLink to leave and use the spaces?

The Zapplink thing is a funny beast to get working, but it seems like you have gotten over most of the hurdles. When you have done your Photoshop work and saved it, flip back to ZB. Then press ‘Return to External Editor’. When back in Photoshop you see the ZB window update in the background, flip back to ZB and accept the changes. Works for me!

I added Zbrush to the exclude list of shapeshifter, as well as the MasterExclude list in Application enhancer, and yet it still starts up using the haxie for some reason. Any ideas?

I work on a Dell laptop running XP Pro. I have ZBrush 2 and am successfully using ZAppLink with Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8.

When I first setup the ZAppLink plugin the button for the plugin appeared in the ‘Document’ menu as it should, but I would receive the following message when I clicked on ‘Ok’ or one of the ‘AppLink’ modes:

“Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor.”

After some investigation the answer to the problem I was experiencing dawned on me… ZAppLink says it will open the ‘default .PSD editor’. I took a look at my registered file type associations, and I did not have .PSD files associated with a program. Once I added the .PSD file type and associated it with Paint Shop Pro everything worked like a charm.

For those not familiar with setting file type associations here ya go…

  • Right click the ‘Start’ button and click on ‘Explore’.
  • Click on ‘Tools’ then ‘Folder Options…’ then the ‘File Types’ tab.

Look through the list of ‘Registered file types:’. The situation that I experienced was that the PSD file type did not exist in this list. If that is the case with you then do the following:

  • Click ‘New’
  • Enter ‘PSD’ (without the single quotes)
  • Click ‘Advanced’
  • Once the ‘Associated File Type:’ dropdownlist populates select the appropriate choice (in my case I selected ‘Paint Shop Pro 8 Image’, but you should select a choice appropriate for the paint program you want to use) and then click ‘Ok’
  • Close the menu
  • Close and then reopen ZBrush and give it a shot

I hope this helps someone out there…

Model is good- Save the file in PS (with collapsed layers) with Zbrush reference untouched and then go back into Zbrush- I accept the changes. Everything looks great but Edit is gone?!?! What am I missing?

PC System- Photoshop CS2 Zbrush2.0

just rename in the application folder -----> fron |ZBrush 2| to |ZBrush2|

(cancel the space)

Now it works fine for me.

MacBookPro
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
Mac OS X 10.4.9

ZBrush 2.03

Peace and love

My Setup: G4 powerbook, 1mhz, 1GB ram, 60GB HD (6GB free),ZBrush 2.03, Most current version of ZAppLink(from site)

What I Did:
changed permissions on:
Adobe Photoshop CS folder (this spelling)
Adobe Photoshop App. (this spelling)
to read/write for all.

path: Mac HD/users/robertellison/APPLICATIONS/ Adobe Photoshop CS/Adobe Photoshop CS

Moved ZBrushx2.0 (original spelling of folder) to:
Mac HD/Users

Path: MacHD/Users/ZBrushX2.0

Changed permissions on ZBrushX2.0 folder,
ZBrush.app
ZStartup
ZPlugs
ZAppLink.zcs
ZAppLinkData
all files in ZAppDatata folder to read/write
changed opening app on all psd files in ZAppLinkDate folderto Photoshop CS (but it reverted to not applicable) so I left it there

Path:MacHD/Users/ZBrushX2.0/ZBrush2/ZStartup/ZPlugs/ (here I installed ZAppLink.zsc
and ZappLinkData folder)

I think that covers everything.

It seems that moving ZBrushX2.0 directly into Users folder was what made it work.

Well, I seem to be following the same string of problems everyone else has encountered.
I go into projection master without having a texture applied, it asks if it should apply a texture, I say yes.
I click to link to pshop.
In photoshop I edit, save return to zbrush
I click return to external editor, it does and then updates my photoshop changes.
I accept the changes.
I click projection master and try to return to pick up.
ZBrush crashes.

After reading through this thread I tried removing the ZTimeLaps.zsc and data folder.
ZBrush didn’t crash.

I seem to have got ZappLink working in ZBrush 3.0…

After you return from Photoshop and click “accept changes” you get a blank canvas, go to document and select import. Browse to the ZappLinkData folder and load the exported PSD file, pick up from Projection Master.

If you are only getting black, use Colorize mode then do a Col>Txr.

I recently upgraded to Zbrush3 then installed all the usual plugins including the ever important Applink. Unfortunately, applink seems to be saving out to the temp psd file fine, and opening Photoshop fine, however it’s not allowing the results of the work there to be returned. Any clue as to what might be causing this and how to rectify it would be immensely appreciated.

I’ve just downloaded and installed ZApplink for ZBrush 3.1.

I’m trying to follow the instructions:

  1. Press Document: ZAppLink
  2. Press OK
  3. In your image editor create a new layer and paint in it.
  4. Return to ZBrush
  5. Press Re-enter ZBrush. If confronted with a screen that says OK(Unchanged) and Return To External Editor, press Return To External Editor and make sure your document was saved. Then return to ZBrush.
    6. Press Keep New Layer to keep the layer.

Now, I’ve created a stroke in ZBrush, clicked ZApplink and successfully went into Photoshop. I then created a new layer and painted a couple of strokes, OK so far. I then returned to ZBrush (as per instruction 4), however I then get stuck on what to do next - there does not seem to be any dialog displayed to re-enter ZBrush or save ??

Can anyone help here ?

I was bumpped this issue myself before, and the way around I found was save the document from your external editor (i.e. photoshop) as its original source (‘TempZAppLinkExport.psd’) In other words, you need to overwrite the document to return to ZB…
This step would be fit between Step 3 and Step 4 on your first list…

Yeah, the no mention of save through me off too. Even worse, the first time I tried it, Photoshop wouldn’t let me save the file in Vista, it said I didn’t have permission. This got me even more confused what to do.

Searching the net, I found out it randomly does that, where you can save it. So I just closed the current one in photoshop, tried again, and finally it was able to save and the changes showed up in Zbrush.

So a suggestion, the moment you go into Photoshop, do a simple change and see if it saves before you spend too much time and find out it doesn’t.

Edit: Also, check out the video here, It might help out more than the simple instructions: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=052523

Many thanks for the replies, however even after watching the video and saving as suggested, I still do not receive the Re-Enter ZBrush dialog box

And all the strokes you did in photoshop are part of the original color layer, or merge ddown with it, leaving the original layer name. Then just hit save. And to be clear, don’t do save-as, just save and it will overight where ever Zapplink had put it. Then switching back it should know if there was a change or not.

I only tested it one night on a basic shape, but now and then I did have problems of it not updating like expected.

Good luck

i had the exact same problem.

the way i resolved it was to delete the tempexport PSD then reset the target program in zbrush back to photo shop.
also from what i understand zbrush uses the time that the psd file was last edited/saved to check whether it has changed and should say “re-enter Zbrush” so if it has not been more than a minuet between opening and saveing, it may not be picked up.
useing save as rather than just save also seems to help for some reason?
Hope this helps
