Pixologic Presents: Action Hero Contest

I’ve found Copernicus works ok as it operates in the background. Not perfectly and a little glitchy in playback but it’s free and suits my purposes for this. I still need to play around with the settings though.

FRAPS and Camtasia are both PC only at the moment but thanks anyway guys

Okay, I have a couple of questions, now that I’ve thought some stuff over (sorry if they’ve been addressed already.)

  1. Are contestants allowed to bring more than one (simple) base mesh in from another app? For instance, if there are costume pieces or a weapon of some sort? I’m just a little confused because I’ve seen other entries that have separate pieces other than their base mesh, brought in from other apps.

  2. Is there any chance that ZApplink will be available for Mac 3.12 users at some point during the contest? While I know it’s not a necessity for painting the characters, it would really help.

Thanks!!!

Yes, it’s allowed. But the more base meshes you bring in from another app, the better your ZBrushing on everything had better be.

I don’t know.

Thanks for the reply Aurick! That helps a lot. :+1:

Aurick i have a question and it has been bothering me alot right now and I know people will argue this til the day I die.

Is there a way to bow out of the contest? I have been debating on it because of my problems I have been having and my depression I have that I’m having trouble taking criticism. I’m so sorry for the trouble I have been causing on my thread but it is just a question. I am thinking if I’m going to or not. But so far it is looking bad for my sanity.

Neglect that question i asked. i have new hope.

Hey guys, how are you doing the transpose video? My computer is crap, and I’m afraid recording while modeling might not me the best idea. Is save a Zbrush script and then play it and record a good idea?

my computer was pretty ‘fragile’ whilst recording. Crashed a few times. I’ve recorded enough so I’m not doing anymore as it actually hinders what I’m doing. On a mac you can’t export the movie but on a pc you can.

aurick im just posting here to let you know ive decided to possibly step down out of the contest but still want to stay in as a non-entrant to learn. im still new and id like to still learn if you dont mind? . let me know what think.

Hey Aurick,
I have a question.
I have made a few transpose videos and posted them to my thread, but I do not have a transpose movie for the pose I want to use. Do I need to repose the model and make a video of that pose, or can i go with the vids I have already made?

thanks for your time.

Hi Aurick,

I need a clarification of the rules about what can and must be included in the final still image render.

The paragraph about it says that what is required is:

a high quality render (done in Zbrush) of your finished model. Additional renders showing areas of detail may also be submitted. Incorporating your character into a scene is optional, and won’t be taken into consideration by the judging panel. (Although it may influence the popular vote if your character is selected as finalist).

Now, I designed my base thinking about the way it looks in the sculpt and making considerations about its presence in each instance of the turnaround, but I’d really like to modify it for a final render, this because I want to expand what I’ve done by adding a whole scene and for what I have in mind the base that I have is not ideal and should be modified. Would this be compliant with the terms of the competition?
And what about image crops? Should the whole of the character be included or can one decide to crop out some chunks if that makes sense graphically? Or should the whole of the character be included but it would be ok to crop out parts of the base? This reference image on the contest’s front page is actually quite a crop.

Could you clarify on this please?

Important Reminder

Here’s a big tip to help you in the contest:

When the judges look at your entries, the FIRST THING that they will do is click the “Thread Gallery” link in your thread. This will let them quickly zero in on your work within the thread.

But guess what? This will only work if you’ve uploaded the images to your thread and inserted them into your posts! If you link to images that are hosted outside of ZBrushCentral, or if you upload images and then don’t actually insert them into your post (they appear as thumbnails after your post in this case), they won’t appear in the thread gallery. And that will of course hurt your chances.

So upload and insert your images! If you need information on how to do this, check out this post that I made earlier today: Click Here

We have spent hours today going through threads to upload images and fix cases where images weren’t inserted. But ultimately, it is YOUR responsibility. Please be sure to upload and insert all images so that they can appear in your thread’s gallery.

Thanks!

Good luck in the contest!

Regarding the transpose movie

I don´t know how long my movie will be… I think it´ll be long
Does anybody know if it´s allowed to record the transpose movie with the timelapse function?
And would there be a problem if the timelapse movie would be shorter than 5-10 minutes?
I think I need to know this before I start
Thank you

Hey Moni-Poroni, I think your movie will be longer than 5 mins even with the timelapse option checked. I only recorded part of my transpose process (without timelapse) and I have more than 25 mins. I think I plan to just edit together the best bits. The rules state that it’s down to the artist’s best judgement on how to do the transpose video and what to include. So an awesome bit of transpose work recorded without timelapse is gonna be better. Remember you are trying to show the judges your skills but it is entirely up to you.

I was refreshing my memory on the rules today and I noticed it said the entries will be narrowed down to the top 10 before they are displayed to everyone here to vote. I thought it would be interesting to see the results beyond this though. It would be good to see a list of maybe the top 20 or 25. I wouldn’t mind seeing (by some sheer twist of fate!) if I even managed to come close to the top ten. Just so I can bear it in mind for the future

Captain Sensible
Thank you for the answer
Yes, the rules state
It is up to the artist’s best judgment to decide which portion of the posing should be highlighted
I´ll record only how I´m using the TPM to pose the arm and the fingers
( I think I should highlight this process because the arm and the fingers are important in my case)
and that alone will result in a long movie
Maybe 20-30 min? I don´t know.
That´s why I think the timelapse movie would be better in my case than showing only 5-10minutes in real-time?
Thanks again for the answer:)

BTW- I don´t think we´ll see the list of the top 25.
I think this would be unfair toward all the others. And they would ask for the top 50…the top 100 and so on:)
and I think it´s much “easier” for the judges to select only the top 10…
Well…we´ll never know.
TOP Z-ecret;)

I guess you are right. Where do you draw the line? And they’ve drawn it at 10. Fair enough

I have a question regarding one of the rules, please forgive me if this has been answered or is a stupid question:

Detailed guidelines and instructions for creation and presentation of the Turntable Movie and TransPose movie on both PC and Mac platforms will be provided no later than two weeks prior to the entry deadline of February 13, 2009.

Does this mean that contestants must have their turntables and transpose movies posted by January 31st?

i have question;
may i use programm like CorelDraw, to create Alpha for ZBrush?

wolftrax

No  we´ll just receive detailed guidelines/instructions.
That means: They´ll tell us how to create the Movies and how to present them.
And they will provide those infos no later than two weeks before the challenge is over.
So don´t worry :You have enough time left

Rules
[color=cyan]Final entry will be in three parts:
a. A still render of the posed character.
b. A ZBrush turntable movie of the posed character.
c. A five to ten minute video showing a key phase of the posing process via
TransPose.

That´s why I´m waiting;)

I thought so, just wanted to make sure as it is very soon. I knew they wanted works in progress shown as well as explanations of the process to help others, and so that part (Transpose & Turntable movies) kept nagging at me. Thanks!
