new digital camera. (warning: heavy graphics page)

I just sold one of my leicas and got a digital camera. Yeah I know tell someone who cares. Anyway I was just testing it out in the park and thought I’d post some flowers to cheer up anyone who needs cheering up.

It’s a nikon 4500 if anyone wants to know and I’m pretty impressed.

No.s 3–6 are tiny paper flowers about half an inch big.

I’ve actually been considering buying a digital camer and this one surely takes nice looking pics! About 4 megapixels? I’ve been looking at a couple of Minoltas one of which is 5.1 megapixels- I lean towards them becase my SLR is a Minolta. A brand thing I guess. What kind of storage options/formats do you get?

Wow! Great photos, first of all. Second, the camera is awesome. I have a HP Photosmart that I really like, but I’m not sure it could get this good.

Lonnie,

Yeah it’s 4mp. the 4500 is the latest version of the twisty nikon range. It’s a step up from the 990 series. I didn’t like them but this one is all magnesium body so they have made it much smaller. Before the 4500 I would have gone for the Canon G2 and I was still tossing that one around because it can use the RAW format which means that a full size file that would be about 11 meg as a tif is only 3.5meg. However I must say that the Jpegs that the camera produces are as good as dammit and that is even on the normal jpeg. the high jpeg is as good as a tiff for all intents and purposes.

I almost got the new leica digilux 1 but I got the horrors at the last minute when I realised it is just a rebadged panasonic.

It took a lot of soul searching to go for the nikon. but in the end I went for the pedigree and I knew that the nikons had the edge in the macro department. The leica can process very fast for reportage shooting but it has too many shortcomings.

The new nikon is amazing. and very small. the 5mp cameras are too big and bulky for me. I’m used to leica M. Also the digilux was very noisy.

The nikon is amazingly cheap as well. cheaper than the canon G2.

It also prints out an A4 on my epson printer at 224 ppi as good as if it were 300 ppi.

this site is the best for reviews. They do about 20 pages, very detailed. The review for the 4500 will be about two more weeks.

Photokina will be happening in august and there’s bound to be some holding back till then.

here’s a bit of one of the above shots at the size it was taken at. With no sharpening applied in camera or post processing. It was taken on the best quality jpeg then jpegged again for the web. Taking all this into consideration this is remarkable. This flower is only 2 centimetres across.

this is one of those spikey cactus flowers

Sorry I’ve got a bit carried away now. No sharpening on this one either, reduced to half size.

Hanuman, those are some absolutely AWESOME flowers!

I DO have a Nikon 990, the one with the swivel lens, 3.34 MP. At first I didn’t think I was going to appreciate that feature but through time have come to LOVE it!

I think the new Nikon CoolPix 5000 weighs about HALF of what my camera weighs, and you think it’s too bulky?? Man, you’d HATE mine! But it feels like a real camerea in my hands, and the weight really hasn’t been an issue. Some of the other cameras I tried before I bought this one just didn’t feel like a camera, more like a toy, you know?

Mentat, if you’re considering a digital camera, make sure you pick up a PC Photo magazine and go through the ads in there, shopping prices. Last time I looked, the Nikon CP5000 (5+MP) and the Minolta Dimage 7 (5+MP) were somewhere around $600 apiece. I don’t remember which dealers had them for that price, but there were a couple of them. Check Best Buy or Circuit City, those cameras are going for around $1100 there! That’s a LOT less than I paid for my 3+MP camera! Good luck!

And damn fine pics there, Hanuman!

WOW!!! these are gorgeous flowers!!! thanks for sharing and congratulations re: the camera!!! keep them coming!
