Mystery files - any ideas please?

Hello GFX lovers - it’s quiz time! All this stuff I’m downloading from ZBCentral is taking up way too much disk space. In an effort to clear out GigaBytes of unused competing junk today, I discovered a folder called C:\Render which contains 250 files simply called 0001, 0002, … , 0250 (no extensions). I have not created these deliberately, nor have I any idea what might have spawned them (other than it is presumably a 3D graphics program). I’m a bit unhappy about the idea of deleting them without knowing their provenance. I realise I could temporarily rename the folder and see if everything is still working, but it’s difficult to be sure because it might belong to some obscure, seldom used function in an unfamiliar package (some, like Blender, I’ve never really got off the ground with but might have another go some day). If anyone recognises this oddly named folder of extensionless files, I would be grateful for identification of the creating program and whether I can safely delete them.

Some clues: I have a number of 3D programs installed (ZBrush, Poser, Vue d’Esprit 4, Genesis II, Terragen and siblings, TrueSpace, Satori XL, Blender, XFrog demo, 3D Plant Studio demo, inumerable smaller utilities, etc. and have had several others temporarily installed for trial at one time or another.) Thanks in anticipation of some inspired detective work.

My guess would be it is a render of an animation. Most programs output files like this for animation, like terragen, blender, and maya. But even if they have no extensions, you should be able to open them in a graphics editer, provided it knows how to read the file.

I think that it’s from Blender, which used to be installed on my machine.
Cheers!

Muvlo - thanks for that. I already tried opening it in PSP, but no joy. Of course if it’s an animation, that’s hardly surprising. I had suspected a static ray-trace or similar.

Ken - both you and Muvlo have mentioned Blender, with which I’ve certainly had a few sessions unsuccessfully playing (including supplied animation samples)- just couldn’t get the hang of that interface. Sounds favourite; I’ll take it from there…

Thanks guys. :+1:

Flycatcher, if you’d like you could upload one of the files here and I’ll try to open it with some other programs. (If you use the forum upload, I think you will need to put it in a ZIP file because the forum only accepts some file types.)
