proteus: SSS stands for subsurface scattering, which descibes the way light hits and is subsequently scattered through the different layers of skin…
you can see it happen particularly in thin parts of skin…like if you put a flash light up to the webing of your fingers…or the sunlight hits the back of an ear…the bottom most layer of blood shines through bright red…

Nothing more to add really - fantastic work. Just wanted to mention that the first “Monster Maker” issue of Cinefex is my all time favourite issue. A wonderful depiction of a young kid following his dreams and pushing himself to do his best in life.

You’re a legend, man. Well done, enjoy it!

thank you tiktok.

Superb state of art image Monstermaker!!

Wonderful likeness Monstermaker! Thank you for raising the bar here at Zbrush Central and inspiring us to all improve on what is possible with this awesome software.
Also congratulations on the enjoyable article in the latest Make Up Artist magazine issue #58. I was looking though the magazine for skin texture ideas and was pleasantly surprised to find your interview covering your Zbrush experience up to this date. I just wish this Karloff image could have made it in the article. Still, it is nice to admire your Zbrush work away from the computer.
Look forward to see more of your work in 2006.

Respectfully,

jelee

UTTER RESPECT…feels proud to be next to your work in featured gallery…your effects work has been a great inspiration to me…and for many years to come…you’ve worked in such great movies and one to name is 1976’s King Kong…thanks for inspiring.

Harsh.

I just pop in now and then to marvel at the superb work here and was amazed a while ago to see that my favourite movie SPFX Artist - Rick Baker was a regular Poster on these very forums! and a fan of Digital Modelling on Z-Brush!
I am about to dabble with Z-Brush and am glad to see any new posts by you Monster Maker as Your stuff is so inspiring!

Apologies in advance for this lengthy post. (Would LOVE to see a High Res of this Picture posted here.)

Well, Howdy Monster Maker and greetings to all yawl who are reading this. I am the very definition of “Noob” here. I have never used Zbrush & never done any modeling. I just sorta stumbled in here and this FRANKENSTEIN pic was the first thing i saw. OH WOW!!! I am simply BLOWN AWAY by this Picture. Like many others here have said, I too thought at first it was an Actual Photo. Once i realized it was done with Zbrush (and a few other programs as mentioned by THE artist), I nearly pissed myself. Then I of course noticed that it was infact Rick Baker who had created it and I thought “No Wonder”. (taking nothing away from ALL the GREAT Artists whose work i have seen here. Loads of Truly Amazing work from Everyone)

But Talk about Inspiration. After seeing this Monster, I now am reading up on Zbrush and intend on getting it and trying my hand for the First time on Digital Artwork. At the same time, seeing something this Incredible has almost discouraged me from bothering to try (LOL).

As far as mentioning something about your Impressive career. Many Many things i could say but i will narrow them down to two. “It’s Alive” was the first movie ever to make me have to sleep with my parents, and your “KING KONG” hit me (at age 8) the same way that Peter Jackson declares the original KONG hit him when he was a child. Pure Magic and Wonderment (if that is even a word) and is Still one of my Absolute Favorite Movies of ALL Time to this day.

Thanks for the Wonderful Memories (oh yeah, and the nightmares)

Beautifully made. such perfection.
The texture in the jacket is extraordinary realistic, well…all is extraordinary realistic and with the right atmosphere about it.
Great art :+1:

“I think it is better than the first one that I did still not as perfect as I would like it to be…”

What do you see wrong with it? I think it’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Hi, I was going to wait till next Tues. to post this as that is the one year anniversary of my first post but, I’m going to be busy Tues. and today seemed like a good day.
This was black and white, well actually the model is in color but I de-saturated it in PS. I decided it wasn’t festive enough , considering it’s to celebrate my one year anniversary here, so I re-colored it Basil Gogos like in PS. I may post the B+W one later. Hope you like it

And to think…
yes, monsters love cake too!

It looks great!
-Andy

As aways Rick, it looks GREAT!
I think it would make a great poster without the cake.
I’m a big fan of Basil Gogos and I’m happy to say I was able to meet him at the World Famous Monsters Con about 10 years ago!

Luv it luv it luv it!

I specifically like seeing eyes beneath those heavy lids. The refraction of light brings the entire character to life. The hand is gorgeous. The lighting and color choices amazing. Well done! Happy Anniversary Monster Maker!

Jim

Hey MonsterMaker can I have a piece? Great job. Did you do that light bloom in photoshop? I didn’t think it was possible in zbrush.

Hmmmmm Monster likes tasty candle!!!
