Meats, Petroc, Spencer, Alvarez Z3 Tutorials! - Gnomonology.com

Yes, it does help. If it’s only importing a boxed character and then ZB3, there’s no problem. I was afraid it would be a bit like those ComputerArts (a magazine) tutorials: you buy an issue on Photoshop but to be able to follow the tutorials you need, say, Illustrator, 3DS Max and After Effects. And half of the tut happens in those other apps.

Thanks for answering.

Or within 48 hours thereafter.

Just placed my order. Also grabbing Wendy Froud’s Faerie Figure DVD while I’m at it, both because I have a drawer full of sculpy I feel bad for neglecting, and because I’m anxious to see if traditional sculpting videos will help me in ZBrush – if so, that opens whole worlds of available training!

I was tempted to forego shipping costs and pick up my order in person, but it’ll be an extra week or so before Gnomon gets copies onsite, and I can’t predict my own schedule that far in advance. It could be months before the stars align on that one.

…by which point, the videos might all be available on gnomonology (just to bring this back on topic). But after much deliberation, I figured I’m willing to pay extra for a nicely packaged physical object to sit on my shelf next to all the others.

So, there we are. I’m just a few days off from not having any excuses to fall back on!

That’s sort of terrifying.

I’m downloading the zack petroc tutorials from gnomonolgy, I paid for them. Can you also burn the DVD as well? Or is that an additional charge?

javierloredo linked to a very nice base you can start with in his Old Master “Vasalius” thread, in case anyone needs one.

hey guys !!!
…Gnomon dosnt any tutorials for accurate rendering a character (but Alex Alvarez Gnomology Training…and SSS Shader )…
anyway, rendering in Renderman is very Cool and faster than MR !!! but you can`t find a good surce for learning Renderman…

at end i must say DigitalTutors zbrush is very scary… :ex: that Will make you Master Artist…

I guess since zaplink and zmapper aren’t available for z3 yet they won’t be covered on the DVD.

Think I’ll wait until Unleashing ZBrush by Matthew Yetter (aurick) is released. Can be pre-ordered from Amazon.

There are already some great tutorials for Z3 on ZBrushCentral.

skull_monster,
I can’t tell if you’re trolling on behalf of DigitalTutors or against them. Whatever it is you’re trying to say is probably better served by speaking directly.

bisenberger,

I guess since zaplink and zmapper aren’t available for z3 yet they won’t be covered on the DVD.
I expect there’ll be followup videos to cover that on Gnomonology when the time comes. But if money’s an issue and patience isn’t, that could be a turnoff.

Think I’ll wait until Unleashing ZBrush by Matthew Yetter (aurick) is released. Can be pre-ordered from Amazon.
A fine choice, to be sure. Aurick’s the man.

(I don’t remember if I actually placed my pre-order yet, so I might end up buying two or three copies by the time it actually ships. Point being, I’m totally on board with that)

Thing is, Amazon’s currently predicting March 25 2008 for publication, and I want to clear a few hurdles now. So for me, it makes sense to do both. Your mileage may vary.

There are already some great tutorials for Z3 on ZBrushCentral.
Absolutely! And even more on the wiki.

I’m just happy to finally have too many resources. That’s a good feeling.

Gnomon dosnt any tutorials for accurate rendering a character !!

Suggest you look again, Mr. Alvarez himself has a dvd out about
Zbrush which covers the subject. Also covers how to properly use
the different maps produced to greater effect.

Among others. (Here’s that one, which is great for Maya and Mental Ray. If you’ve got Max and Brazil, you might want this one for humans or this for other creatures. If you’ve got XSI, this one’s your match)…

But, I think our friend knew that. Wierd mix of sarcasm and misinformation in that post. Really hard to get at what he was going for.

“Z” many thanks for including the links, got lazy.

bicc39…i mean rendering with renderman or any others…
Ctrl+Z…thank you for links…i like “Ian Joyner” Learnings…
but im a maya User…Gnomon is a Very Powerfull workshop…and you can find professional Learnings there…
my question is : i dont know why you can find a lot of nice still images that rendered in max…its because of Engines like Vray or brazil ?

sorry for that post…about DT you judge it…this 2 sculpture

Those certainly don’t hurt. But I credit the artist pressing that render button, the time they’ve spent preparing their image, and the years they’ve spent refining their craft.

(you have to remember, 3d studio has been around in some form or another since 1990 – same year Windows 3.0 came out. And a lot of those users hit the ground running 'cause they already knew AutoCAD, which had been out since 1982…)

In all fairness, you’re comparing one excercise in an Intro video to the result of a six-hour dedicated sculpt.

Imagine someone had said the reverse with these examples:

Could you take that seriously?

Meats Meier is a world-class digital artist. No question. Is that required for an intro video? It inspires confidence and helps make the sale, but what actually counts once you’re watching is his ability to teach. To help you make the software second-nature, so you can focus on your work.

I happen to know Meats excels at this. Maybe this Kyle Green fellow also does – I couldn’t say. (I hated DT’s Z2 intro, but this thread is promising. shrug)

Thing is, you can’t establish any of that by comparing screenshots.

Whoa, this thread turned controversh!

I must admit I felt a tiny bit miffed to find that all the videos were paid, but only because the introd. post led me that way, and then reality kicked in. I’m a professional artist. I sell my larger paintings for thousands. Do you surmise from this that I give the small ones away free? Of course not, I just sell them for a bit less. These guys do (amazing) tut vids professionally, why would we think shorter vids should be free? And then there’s the prices. A few bucks for the knowledge of some of the recognised masters? 8 or so bucks for an hour or more of training? It’s so close to free it don’t matter! I feel like a thief! Many, many people can’t afford dozens or hundreds of dollars for training, fair enough, but who among us computer owning Westerners cant manage a few bucks for stuff of this quality?

The other kerfuffle is about the top row status of this thread and why the other companies don’t merit the same treatment. I would call attention to the fact that, as far as I know, DT, Kurv and the others aren’t here on a daily basis helping us in our struggles to produce masterpieces. Meats, Alex, Zac, etc. do that very thing regularly right here. As I’ve said before, its like getting free advice on my golf swing from Tiger Woods. These guys spend a good deal of time helping half-arsed vertex bashers like me, and I am forever in their debt. I can’t deny that if Alex puts up a free vid for us all I would be bashing the bandwidth for all it was worth, but I really don’t think the gesture is neccesary to merit top row status for news of their new venture. I for one would likely have missed out on hearing about this amazing service were it not right there in front of me. Moreover, if some of the other masters of the craft such as Rimasson, Boulay, Baker or Zuccarello had such offerings available I’d want them front & centre so I wouldn’t miss out.

A final point. I know of no other service offering top shelf training for $8-12. Certainly not without buying into a larger scheme or waiting months for discs to make their way across the planet. I assure you, there would be few here who despise advertising more than me, but I see no advertising. I see Pixologic doing us all a useful service. Why do most of you click on the best images in the top row? Surely its at least in part to learn something? I defy anyone here to suggest that guys like Meats and Alex spend their time here so they can line their pockets. Anyone? I thought not.

Here endeth the lesson. I’m off to grab some of the sweet tutorial goodness on offer at…well, you know where. That place starting with ‘G’.

Good luck all, may your vertices remain straight

Glen Southern used to be that guy.

Now, I guess he’s that guy.

edit:
That came out more harsh and accusatory than intended.

Glen’s someone whose work here inspired me to learn ZBrush in the first place, and he’s very much on my “can’t wait to see what this guy does with the new version” list. He’s not the only conspicuous absence, by any stretch.

Anyway, Kurv hasn’t announced a Z3 video, so they’re probably exempt from the comparison.

Well, I finally managed to pay, and downloaded what’s available on ZB3.
I watched the movies, and I find them a much better quality than the Kurv (intro to ZB2) I have. I’m not speaking on an artistic level, but as someone who wants to learn. G’s are better thought-out, better organised and better prepared. They are also better understandable for someone who normally speaks French or Flemish.
BUT: they are not for beginners.
I’m very happy I first got all the ZBTraining vids, watched them, tried things out and doodled around.
This is no critique! You know that re-topology and creating a human character aren’t exactly beginner’s subjects.

As for the fact that some money has to be paid: it is their free choice to ask, and your free choice to say no. And my free choice to say: these guys are good, from them I can learn. And that’s worth a few dollars. Often I prefer to know an exact price to seeing that “donate” button.
But that’s my opinion.

So please use the smooth brush and keep these forums like they generally are: friendly.

And my free choice to say: these guys are good, from them I can learn. And that’s worth a few dollars.

Exactly!!!

i found this from zack…its perfect…

it will be very cool if he make it`s tutorial

Check this thread for some DVD training reviews and info on the to be released ZB3 training by the 3D Buzz team:

I need to stay off the internet for awhile…heh.

It’s really nice and a kind thing that Alex offers some of his knowledge also as free downloadable movies on the Gnomon-site :+1: , but trying to download them is really pain.

The servers are almost always ‘busy’ and you have first to wait some time and then the download-stream slows finally down to ~ 10 - 50 KBit/s , doesn’t support download-management and sometimes IE quits from 80% download with a ‘timing-out’-message. Not so nice. :-1:
