Mac & Zbrush 3 Thread

so if Adobe did buy zBrush, which i think is quite possible. (adobe needs a creative 3d program in their arsenal that can be used for illustration) why is this a bad thing to some? i was quite happy they bought macromedia, the integration is nice. what would be so bad if the took over zBrush?

The integration would be smoother, cross platforming would be a doddle, but the price would skyrocket!

But atleast I wouldn’t be affraid f dying form old age before actually getting the software!

Interesting thread and good to see it hasn’t become too hostile - or shut down by the admin gods!

Im a OSX Maya / ZB user, but have to admit that if Autodesk and Pixo dont get there OSX support sorted out and seriously imporve in a few areas I (and a few other people I know) will be jumping to PC with XSI and Mudbox.

Not a threat or anything, but XSI 7 looks amazing and if Mudbox adds painting tools then its all decided for me.

I love both XSI and Mudbox, but if you want to stay under OS X, Houdini and Silo are excellent investments to learn, Houdini in particular. Silo isn’t as robust as Mudbox or ZBrush for sculpting, but look at their gallery. There is some amazing work being sculpted.

But I can’t wait to use ZBrush with those two.

Regardless of whether or not such a buyout would be good or bad, I don’t think there’s enough here to indicate that anything like that is going to happen.

I mean this speculation wouldn’t even be here if Pix didn’t have a Mac version (because then there wouldn’t be a version in delay), so as far as I can see, all we have is a delayed Mac port. I think that talk of a buyout kinda going out on a limb…

Will we ever learn what, if anything is actually going on behind the scenes, or will the whole ZBrush 3 for mac go the way of Jimmy Hoffa, or the JFK assassination? Maybe people will just debate about it for years without ever really knowing the full story. Was there a single programmer, or a second programmer involved?
Does anyone here even know of anybody on the ZBrush for mac beta team, or does their N.D.A. specifically state that they have to totally disavow any knowledge of Pixologic, or ZBrush. What’s more, should they be asked any questions pertaining to either entity, they have to swallow a poison capsule that they must carry with them at all times.
The truth is out there…

perhaps at sig they will unveil Z4, which will cost money for PC users but be free for MAC and have the same release date?

I have Silo and I love it but I don’t think there is any way to get any sculpting into a displacement map for painting/rendering in another app. If there is, please show me the way… would be appreciated.

Sig aint that far away, though time is ticking by very very slowly! (probably because I’m off to Germany in little under 2 weeks and my excitement seems to slow time down) I wonder why the last announcment by anyone with any official knowledge was to stop the rediculous bickering on thisd thread. Would have been good to say:

“Ok I’ve deleted alot of posts because of yadda yadda yadda. By the way Guys, news on the OS X port is…”

I’m not trying to get at Aurick, but I’m sure everyone on the thread can mirror my frustration!

You re right, but still its fun to think of it… what if …

well i’d guess we WILL be seeing the next version of zbrush pretty soon…now that autodesk have started to show what they have been upto with developing mudbox

Yup, Mudbox 2 looks very nice, wish they’d say whether the Mac version has been dropped or not.

Mudbox 2009. Surprising name.

Have Autodesk, ever actually ported anything to the Mac platform?

If it, as it likely is, Windows only. It can only be an incentive for Pixologic to clean up in the Mac market, for this class of software. Giving us something to smile about, would be a good idea, very soon. Getting us too used to bootcamp, could create competition where none need exist.

yes…they have, combustion to mac osx

as well as maya of course!:+1:

They didn’t port Maya. That’s how it came from Alias. I don’t know anything about Combustion. But I suppose it’s a start.

So. Do you know if Mudbox 2009 is ported? I should think they would have made a song and a dance if it were. Don’t you?

Speaking of Mudbox …

You should have a look at this !
very impressive
Better for ZBrush to hurry up !

Well, I’m not sure about the story behind Combustion (but I’ve gotta say, I do really like it on OSX. Not as good as Shake, but I’d take it over AfterEffects any day of the week), but Alias already had a Mac version of Maya when they got bought out by Autodesk. So all Autodesk does is keep it alive, as opposed to actually porting it. Word I get is that Autodesk isn’t exactly famous for being super Mac-friendly.

Anyway, AFAIK, Skymatter had plans to take Mudbox multi-platform, but didn’t have any actual solid release. So I mean, unless the port was already around 80 or 90% complete (ie, tossing it would be less profitable than finishing it), I just don’t see Autodesk porting.

It would be cool, but I’m not counting on it.

well siggraph should reveal all on mudbox and zbrush for updates and if they thought a osx version was a good idea to create/port

That’s pretty much how I see it. If I remember rightly I think Dave CArdwell said they had started work on a Mac version, I believe he’s still involved in the development too so I wouldn’t rule out a Mac version appearing at some point but I’m not too hopeful either.

On the other hand the 3d market is changing and Macs are becoming a bigger sector, who’d have thought a few years ago that there would ever be a Mac version of Houdini?
